Hua Hin reviews 22.7m baht Phon Kingphet Park upgrade
Hua Hin Municipality has reviewed key electrical and structural works under the 22.7 million baht Phon Kingphet Park upgrade in central Hua Hin.
Jirawat Phrommanee, Hua Hin City Clerk, chaired the 20th meeting of the project’s procurement inspection committee on 21 July at the Chomsin Conference Room at Hua Hin Municipality.
The committee examined progress on the redevelopment of the city activity plaza on Damnoen Kasem Road, commonly known as Phon Kingphet Park.
The project has a total budget of 22,673,890.97 baht, with Process Engineer and Consultant Co., Ltd. appointed as the contractor.
Officials considered an extension to the electrical system, revisions to the electrical layout and the approval of shop drawings for the concrete roof structure. Shop drawings provide detailed construction information for contractors and engineers before work is carried out.
The project is intended to improve public facilities and develop the park as a central venue for community events and activities. It is located beside the municipal offices in central Hua Hin.
Phon Kingphet Park honours boxing champion
The park is named after Pone Kingpetch, born Mana Seedokbuab in Hua Hin on 12 February 1935.
He became Thailand’s first world boxing champion after defeating Argentina’s Pascual Pérez for the world flyweight title at Lumpini Boxing Stadium in Bangkok. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit attended the bout.
Pone went on to become a three-time world champion before retiring in 1966. He died on 31 May 1982 at the age of 47.
A 2.2-metre statue honouring him was created by National Artist Nonthiwat Jantanapalin and installed in Hua Hin in 1992. Originally placed on Hua Hin beach, it was later moved to the park.
The renovation is designed to improve the site while preserving its historical importance and its role as a memorial to one of Hua Hin’s best-known sporting figures.
