Iga Swiatek storms into Toronto semifinal against Svitolina

TORONTO: Former world number one Iga Swiatek produced a commanding performance to defeat Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-1 and reach the Toronto Masters semi-finals, where she will face Elina Svitolina in a highly anticipated showdown.

The six-time Grand Slam champion needed only 64 minutes to dispatch the Russian and move into the last four of the Canadian Open. Swiatek controlled the contest from the opening exchanges, using her powerful groundstrokes and precise movement to keep Shnaider under constant pressure.

The Polish seventh seed never faced a break point and dominated the match with impressive consistency. She quickly established a 5-2 advantage in the opening set before breaking Shnaider again and serving it out in 31 minutes.

The second set proved even more one-sided. Swiatek broke early to move ahead 2-1 before another strong sequence of winners helped her extend the advantage. A third break finally ended Shnaider’s resistance and completed a convincing victory.

“From the beginning, I went for it. I felt like I could dominate,” Swiatek said after the match. She also praised her ability to adapt to difficult windy conditions, saying she focused on staying solid rather than overplaying.

The victory is significant for Swiatek, who has endured a challenging 2026 season. It marks her first WTA 1000 semi-final of the year, giving her an opportunity to build momentum ahead of the US Open.

Standing between Swiatek and a place in the final is Elina Svitolina, who produced a dramatic comeback against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

The Ukrainian ninth seed lost the opening set 6-3 but responded brilliantly, winning the second 6-0 before completing a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory. Svitolina recovered after an early setback and showed her fighting spirit when Alexandrova briefly threatened to extend the match late in the deciding set.

The upcoming semi-final promises another intriguing chapter in their rivalry. Swiatek has won three of their five meetings, but Svitolina won their two encounters earlier in 2026, including a three-set victory in the Rome semi-final.

With both players arriving in Toronto with plenty to prove, their semi-final is shaping up as one of the tournament’s most compelling battles.

Hilaria Baldwin shares hilarious parenting mix-up …

Hilaria Baldwin is embracing the chaos of life as a mother of seven, admitting that raising a large family often leads to funny and unforgettable moments. During a recent interview, the wellness entrepreneur shared that keeping track of seven children can sometimes become so overwhelming that she occasionally mixes up their names, something many parents can relate to. Speaking candidly about family life, Hilaria laughed as she confessed that there are days when she accidentally calls one child by another’s name. She explained that with so many busy schedules, school activities and daily routines, moments of confusion are almost inevitable. “It’s just part of having a big family,” she joked, adding that her children have learned to laugh about the mix-ups rather than take them seriously. According to Hilaria, the occasional mistake has become a normal part of life in the Baldwin household. The 42-year-old shares seven children with actor Alec Baldwin, and together they have built a lively home filled with constant activity. While caring for such a large family may seem overwhelming from the outside, Hilaria says she and Alec have found a system that works well for them. She revealed that parenting is very much a team effort. Rather than assigning one parent to every responsibility, the couple divides tasks depending on the day’s schedule. Whether it’s preparing meals, helping with homework, attending school events or putting the children to bed, they support each other to ensure everything gets done. Hilaria explained that flexibility has become the key to managing their household. Some days Alec takes on more responsibilities, while on other days she steps in to handle the majority of the family’s needs. Their ability to communicate and adapt has helped them navigate the demands of raising seven children together. The author also acknowledged that parenting is rarely perfect. She said there are moments of exhaustion, unexpected challenges and plenty of laughter along the way. Instead of striving for perfection, she believes it’s more important to create a loving environment where children feel supported and understood. Her honest comments resonated with many parents online, who praised her willingness to discuss the realities of family life rather than presenting an unrealistic image of perfection. Many social media users admitted they also mix up their children’s names, even in much smaller families. Hilaria has frequently shared glimpses of her home life on social media, offering followers a look at both the joyful and challenging moments of parenting. Her latest interview continues that tradition, highlighting the humor that often comes with raising a large family. Despite the occasional name mix-up, Hilaria made one thing clear: every moment with her children is meaningful. While life with seven kids can be hectic, she says the laughter, love and unforgettable memories make every challenge worthwhile. Her candid reflections offer a reminder that even celebrity families experience the same everyday parenting moments as everyone else.

FA bans concrete pitch walls after death of ex-Arsenal player

The Football Association has introduced new safety rules for perimeter walls around football pitches. The move follows the death of former Arsenal youth player Billy Vigar. Vigar, a 21-year-old forward for Chichester City, died after suffering a brain injury during a match against Wingate and Finchley in north London last September. It’s believed he collided with a concrete barrier near the pitch. Following the tragedy, the FA carried out a full safety review of grounds across the lower leagues. As a result, it has now published new guidance banning solid brick, breeze block or concrete barriers around playing fields. The updated rules apply specifically to clubs in the National League System for men, covering steps one through six. Women’s National League clubs in tiers three and four are also included under the new guidance. The FA confirmed that any existing solid barriers must now be removed as soon as reasonably possible. Where structural issues prevent removal, clubs will instead be required to cover the barriers with suitable protective padding. The governing body said on Friday that affected clubs have already been formally notified. It added that those clubs will now be required to take action in line with the updated safety standards. The rule change marks a significant shift in how English football’s lower tiers approach pitch-side safety. It comes as a direct response to a preventable tragedy that shook the football community last year.
