Raptors acquire Kawhi Leonard from Clippers following NBA probe

TORONTO, USA – The Toronto Raptors completed their trade for Kawhi Leonard on Monday, September 14, after previously putting the deal on hold while the NBA investigated the seven-time All-Star and Los Angeles Clippers over salary cap circumvention.

In exchange for Leonard, the Raptors sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two future first-round draft picks, one future first-round pick swap, and two future second-round picks to the Clippers.

The Raptors put the deal on hold in July after being told by the NBA they would assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation affecting Leonard, who led Toronto to their only championship in 2019 before joining the Clippers.

As part of a year-long probe, the NBA looked into whether Leonard was paid by a now-bankrupt firm that had close ties to owner Steve Ballmer as a way to circumvent league rules restricting how much a team can spend on its player payroll.

Two weeks ago, the NBA said that an independent investigation found a pattern of misconduct and multiple significant rules violations by the Clippers organization.

It stripped the team of five first-round draft picks, imposed a $30 million fine and suspended Ballmer for a year, while Leonard was fined $700,000.

When the punishment was announced the Clippers said they “vehemently reject” the findings and that they would challenge them.

On Sunday, however, Ballmer said the team had communicated to the NBA that they would comply with the penalties and have paid the fine and are moving forward.

“This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets,” Ballmer said in a statement posted on the Clippers’ X account. “I want to apologize to our fans, employees and my fellow NBA team owners for the distraction and the distress this matter has caused, for which I accept responsibility as principal owner.”

Leonard, who accepted full responsibility for what he called lapses in judgment by people within his inner circle, averaged a career-high 27.9 points during the 2025-2026 season and finished seventh in MVP voting.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Kawhi back to Toronto,” Raptors general manager Bobby Webster said in a press release.

“His impact on our organization, our city, and our country is undeniable, and he embodies the competitiveness and championship mindset that we value.”

Leonard has averaged 20.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.7 steals over 798 games (769 starts) across 14 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs (2011-2018), Raptors (2018-2019) and Clippers (2019-2026).

Ingram, 29, was traded to Toronto ahead of the 2025-2026 season and averaged 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while earning his second career All-Star nod.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft has career averages of 19.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists over 572 games (533 starts) spanning 10 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers (2016-2019), New Orleans Pelicans (2019-2025) and Raptors.

Dick, 22, was the 13th overall pick by Toronto in 2023. He has averaged 9.2 points, and 2.5 rebounds and hit 34.3% of his three-point attempts over three seasons with the Raptors, although he averaged a career-worst 6.0 points and 30.1% shooting from outside the arc last season. – Rappler.com

West Indies opt to bat first as Pakistan drop Mohammad Abbas

West Indies won the toss and chose to bat first against Pakistan in the second Test at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Sunday. The hosts went into the match with an unchanged playing XI from the series opener. Pakistan, meanwhile, made four changes to their lineup for this fixture. Pacer Mohammad Abbas was among those dropped, with captain Babar Azam citing the pitch and match conditions as the reasoning behind the call. Two players were handed their maiden Test caps for this match. Ubaid Shah and Awais Zafar both made their debuts for the side. Alongside them, Abdullah Shafique and Sajid Khan returned to the playing eleven after being left out previously. On the flip side, a few key names were missing from Pakistan’s squad this time around. Aamer Jamal and Khurram Shahzad were both left out of the XI. Captain-in-waiting Shan Masood also remained unavailable due to injury, adding to the selection headaches facing the team management. West Indies currently hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. They sealed that advantage with a 90-run win over Pakistan in the opening Test, played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. The stakes in this second Test are significant for the hosts. A win, or even a draw, would be enough to hand West Indies their first Test series victory over Pakistan in 26 years. Their most recent series win against Pakistan dates back to 2000, making this a rare opportunity for the Caribbean side to end a long wait. For Pakistan, the changes reflect an attempt to find the right balance after their defeat in the first Test. The inclusion of two debutants suggests the team management is looking to inject fresh energy into the squad, while also adjusting the bowling attack to better suit local conditions. West Indies fielded Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Brandon King, Kavem Hodge, Shai Hope (wk), Amir Jangoo, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase (capt), Jomel Warrican, Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, and Jayden Seales for this Test. Pakistan’s playing eleven featured Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam (capt), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Salman Ali Agha, Awais Zafar, Ali Usman, Sajid Khan, Mohammad Ali, and Ubaid Shah. With both sides fielding largely settled top orders, the outcome of this Test could go a long way in shaping the final result of the series.

‘Can’t wait to watch Abdullah Shafique in England’, says Ian Bishop

Former West Indies fast bowler and renowned cricket commentator Ian Bishop believes Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique has the temperament and technique to succeed in English conditions, saying he is eager to watch the young batter during the upcoming Test series against England. Shafique has emerged as one of Pakistan’s most dependable red-ball batters following his remarkable performances against the West Indies, and Bishop feels the 26-year-old has all the qualities needed to handle one of cricket’s toughest challenges. Speaking about the Pakistani opener, Bishop described Shafique as a calm and composed batter who remains patient even in difficult situations. “Abdullah Shafique is a composed batter who knows how to build an innings under pressure,” Bishop said, adding that such qualities are crucial for success in England, where swinging conditions and disciplined bowling regularly test even the world’s best players. The former West Indies pacer acknowledged that English pitches present a unique challenge but noted that Shafique already has valuable experience after representing Yorkshire in county cricket. Although that exposure will help him adapt more quickly, Bishop stressed that delivering consistently in England remains a demanding task for any international batter. Shafique’s confidence has soared after his outstanding performance in the recently concluded Test series against the West Indies. Drafted into Pakistan’s squad after Shan Masood suffered an injury, the right-handed opener seized the opportunity in spectacular fashion. He remained unbeaten on 160, producing one of the finest innings of his career and becoming the first Pakistani batter in 49 years to score 150 or more runs in a Test innings in the West Indies. The memorable knock not only strengthened Pakistan’s batting lineup but also reinforced Shafique’s reputation as one of the country’s brightest Test prospects. With Pakistan set to face England in a highly anticipated Test series, fans and cricket experts alike will be watching closely to see whether Abdullah Shafique can carry his superb form into English conditions and establish himself among the world’s elite opening batters.

His core focus will center on performance optimization, maintaining composure under intense pressure, focus retention, and confidence-building frameworks tailored specifically for high-stakes international platforms. Additionally, Nawaz will collaborate directly with athletes, coaches, and technical officials on mental well-being initiatives while helping structure team dynamics ahead of major domestic and international events. This strategic development comes at a pivotal moment as Pakistan finalizes preparations to send a 100-member national contingent, spanning 23 competitive sports disciplines, to the upcoming 6th World Nomad Games 2026.
