PH nets biggest Asian Games medal haul in 6 decades

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines recorded its biggest Asian Games haul in six decades as it wrapped up its campaign in the 20th edition in Nagoya, Japan, on Sunday, October 4, with four golds, nine silvers, and 16 bronzes for a total of 29 medals.

Although the country matched its 17th-place finish in 2023 in Hangzhou, China, it came away with its most medals since winning 42 in the 1966 staging in Bangkok, Thailand.

Gymnastics star Carlos Yulo showed the way for the delegation with two golds, while pole vault stalwart EJ Obiena and taekwondo standout Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape scored one each as they all claimed a piece of history.

Yulo ruled in men’s floor exercise and vault — the same events in which he captured his two Olympics golds — to become the first Filipino gymnast to win an Asian Games medal. In doing so, he completed his collection which includes titles from the World Championships, Asian Championships, World Cup, and Southeast Asian Games.

Obiena defended his men’s pole vault crown in record-breaking fashion, setting a new Asian Games mark of 5.91 meters as he emerged as only the fourth back-to-back champion in the event.

Then in a breakthrough in taekwondo, Yape became the Philippines’ first-ever Asian Games gold medalist in the sport following his triumph in the mixed individual virtual taekwondo, an event that debuted in the continental showpiece.

Yape secured the landmark gold for Philippine taekwondo after bagging bronze in the men’s individual poomsae.

With four golds, the country equaled its tally in 2023 and 2018 in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia.

The Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission initially set an eight-gold target — a haul that, if achieved, would have marked the Philippines’ first time winning at least five golds in a single edition since its seven-gold showing in 1962.

But a fifth gold remained elusive, with the country enduring final losses in mixed martial arts, 3×3 basketball, sepak takraw, archery, boxing, taekwondo, and jiu-jitsu.

MMA fighter Jean Claude Saclag (men’s traditional -65kg) delivered the first silver followed by the Gilas Women team of Kacey dela Rosa, Kennan Ka, Amyah Espanol, and Maria Pasilang (women’s 3×3 basketball), the sepak takraw squad of Jean Marie Sucalit, Abegail Sinogbuhan, and Nelly Jay Salon (women’s double), archer Amaya Amparo Cojuangco (women’s individual compound), and taekwondo jin Juliana Mykhail Candelaria (women’s individual poomsae).

The Philippines stayed on track to break through that four-gold ceiling on Friday, October 2, as boxer Carlo Paalam (men’s 55kg) and taekwondo bets Tachiana Mangin (women’s -49kg) and Kurt Barbosa (men’s -58kg) all reached the finals, only to fall short in their respective title bouts.

Jiu-jitsu champion Alexandria Enriquez (women’s -63kg) stood as the Philippines’ last hope for a fifth gold on Saturday, October 3, but she suffered the same fate as Paalam, Mangin, and Barbosa following a narrow loss by advantage to Thailand’s Orapa Senatham.

The Philippines secured 16 bronzes, its most since also bagging 16 in 2002, with the likes of tennis star Alex Eala (women’s singles), gymnast Eldrew Yulo (men’s horizontal bar), weightlifter Albert Ian delos Santos (men’s 70kg), and athletics bets Victoria Bossong (women’s 800m) and John Cabang Tolentino (men’s 110m hurdles) also contributing to the tally.

As expected, China claimed the overall championship, doing so for the 12th consecutive edition as it dominated with 169 golds, 89 silvers, and 83 bronzes.

Host Japan finished second in the medal standings for the third straight time with 83 golds, 95 silvers, and 91 bronzes, while South Korea placed third with 39 golds, 43 silvers, and 68 bronzes.

Meanwhile, Thailand ended up as the best Southeast Asian nation, landing at seventh with 18 golds, 13 silvers, and 21 bronzes followed by Malaysia (9-7-16) at 11th, Indonesia (5-11-23) at 16th, then the Philippines.

Messi returns as Inter Miami held to draw

Lionel Messi made his long-awaited return for Inter Miami on Saturday after an extended break following the FIFA World Cup, helping his side earn a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Argentine captain featured for the first time since the World Cup final, coming off the bench in the second half. Although he created several dangerous moments and came close to scoring, he was unable to find the net in his comeback appearance. The match was delayed by 40 minutes due to bad weather before Inter Miami made a bright start. Veteran striker Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the 16th minute, continuing his impressive run of form with his seventh goal in four matches. Columbus Crew restored parity in the 34th minute after an own goal by Casemiro. However, Inter Miami regained the lead before halftime when Suarez provided a precise assist for Noah Allen, who headed the ball into the net. The visitors refused to give up and found the equaliser late in the match. Midfielder Brais Mendez, making his debut for Columbus Crew after joining from Spanish club Real Sociedad, curled home a free kick in the 84th minute to secure a share of the points. The draw brought an end to Inter Miami’s six-match winning streak, though the club remained second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. In another MLS fixture, Polish striker Robert Lewandowski delivered a memorable performance in his first home appearance for Chicago Fire. The veteran forward scored twice to inspire his team to a 2-1 victory over Charlotte FC. Lewandowski netted his first goal for Chicago to cancel out Charlotte’s early lead before scoring again moments later. He completed his brace in the second half, helping Chicago register its first league win since the World Cup break. Messi’s return and Lewandowski’s impressive display added fresh excitement to the MLS season as several international stars resumed club action following the conclusion of the World Cup.

Thitikul leads Women’s open as Ryu and Kuwak…

World number two Jeeno Thitikul leads the first round of the AIG Women’s Open by two shots after a spectacular seven-under-par 64 at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s. The 23-year-old Thai, who has 11 top-10 finishes in majors but is yet to win one, went bogey-free in a fine start to her latest attempt. Thitikul sank seven birdies in a faultless round, including three straight birdies on the front nine and difficult par saves. “Winning one [major] doesn’t mean I am going to have a really good, successful career,” Thitikul said. “Winning one doesn’t mean much, I would rather be a consistent player, more than just winning one and then gone. Sometimes I had a hard time dealing with all the noise.” South Korea’s Haeran Ryu, aiming to become only the fifth woman in history to claim three majors in a calendar year, is tied for second alongside Japan’s Shiho Kuwaki on five under. Ryu, 25, claimed her second major in the space of two weeks at the Evian Championship earlier this month. That form continued as four birdies on the front nine quickly took her to the top of the leaderboard. Despite a bogey on the 15th, Ryu finished with two birdies in the last three holes. England’s Lottie Woad and Charley Hull are both on two under, while compatriot Alice Hewson led the tournament in the morning and finished one under. Hull, the most recent British female player to win a major, is back playing after giving birth five months ago and endured a tough opening round to end the day five over. “I missed quite a few putts today that I felt I should have holed, but I felt like I stayed in there pretty well considering how nervous I was, because I feel there was a lot of pressure on me out there,” she said. Last year’s Open champion Miyu Yamashita shot one-over-par, while three-time major winner Lydia Ko is even par. World number one Nelly Korda, who started the year with two major titles and won the US Open in June, struggled in her quest for a career Grand Slam, finishing two over par. Korda got off to a slow start with bogeys on the second and third holes but recovered those shots to reach the back nine at even par before slipping back.
