Meta faces major trial over alleged harmful impact

Meta Platforms is facing a major legal battle in a California federal court, where a group of state attorneys general is accusing the company of deliberately designing Facebook and Instagram in ways that can make children and teenagers addicted to social media. The trial, beginning Wednesday in Oakland, could result in huge financial penalties and force Meta to make major changes to how its platforms operate.

The seven-week trial will examine allegations from Colorado, Kentucky, California and New Jersey that Meta designed its platforms to keep young users engaged for extended periods while misleading the public about their safety. The case also involves claims from 29 states that Meta illegally collected and used children’s personal information, allegedly violating federal law.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, with opening statements expected on August 18. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify during the proceedings, along with Instagram chief Adam Mosseri.

The case is considered one of the biggest legal challenges yet faced by Meta over the effects of social media on young people. The company has estimated that potential damages could reach $1.4 trillion, a figure close to its market value of around $1.5 trillion. However, the states involved have not publicly revealed how much compensation they intend to seek.

The attorneys general are also asking the court to order Meta to introduce stronger age restrictions and remove features such as infinite scrolling. They want the company to make additional changes aimed at reducing the potential negative effects of social media on children.

Meta has strongly rejected the allegations and said it expects evidence presented during the trial to demonstrate its efforts to protect young users. The company said it has listened to parents, worked with experts and law enforcement agencies, and conducted extensive research into issues affecting children and teenagers.

The lawsuit, filed in 2023, followed a multistate investigation into the impact of Facebook and Instagram on young users. The investigation gained momentum after former Meta employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen testified before a US Senate committee in 2021. Haugen alleged that Meta was aware of potential harm to young users and had information about ways to make its platforms safer but chose not to make certain changes.

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport has accused Meta of continuing to prioritise user engagement and profits despite allegedly knowing that its platforms could negatively affect children.

Public concern over social media use among young people is also growing. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 85% of Americans believe social media can be addictive for children, while 61% said social media companies need stronger government oversight.

Meta and other technology companies are facing thousands of similar lawsuits from states, school districts, local governments and individuals. Two cases that have already reached juries resulted in verdicts against Meta. Last week, a New Mexico judge ordered the company to pay $567 million and make changes to its platforms after finding Meta responsible for contributing to a children’s mental health crisis in the state.

Meta continues to deny wrongdoing and has argued that social media addiction is not officially recognised as a psychiatric condition. Legal experts believe the latest trial could become a crucial test for the company, particularly following recent courtroom losses.

The case will be overseen by US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who has taken the unusual step of using an advisory jury to provide findings on specific questions. Rogers will consider the jury’s conclusions but will have the final authority over the case.

The states are seeking financial damages as well as nationwide changes to Meta’s platforms. Their demands include stronger age restrictions, deletion of systems created using children’s data, limits on notifications and infinite scrolling, and changes to algorithms so that the well-being of young users is given greater importance than simply maximising engagement.

    Babar Azam, Abbas rise in ICC Test rankings after West Indies defeat

    Pakistan captain Babar Azam and experienced pacer Mohammad Abbas have moved up in the latest ICC Test rankings.     Pakistan strikes landmark offshore gas find

    KARACHI: Pakistan has recorded a significant breakthrough in hydrocarbon exploration with the discovery of high-quality gas from a new petroleum play. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced that its exploration well, Dolphin, drilled in the company-operated Sarani Block in Sujawal district, Sindh, has yielded a major gas discovery. On one horizon, morning arrives in a chilly mist where vaporized rocks might condense into glittering, mineral clouds. On the opposite horizon, evening sets in as a roaring, hyper-heated furnace hot enough to shred water molecules into raw hydrogen and oxygen. This isn’t sci-fi world-building, it is the reality of WASP-121 b, an extreme exoplanet located roughly 850 light-years from Earth. Astronomers analyzing data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have uncovered unprecedented details about this distant world, proving for the first time that its morning and evening twilight zones are fundamentally different from one another. A World Locked in Perpetual Extremes WASP-121 b belongs to a class of cosmic objects known as hot Jupiters: giant gas planets that orbit extraordinarily close to their parent stars. Because of this extreme proximity, the planet is tidally locked. Just as the Moon always presents the same face to Earth, WASP-121 b always presents the exact same hemisphere to its star. One side endures an unrelenting, eternal day with scorching temperatures topping 2,500 degrees Celsius (4,500 degrees Fahrenheit). The opposite side faces permanent night, staring into cold space. For years, astrophysicists hypothesized that the narrow transition zones between day and night. The planet’s terminators might harbor complex, asymmetrical weather patterns. However, confirming this required measuring subtle variations in starlight as the planet passed in front of its star. How Jet Streams Reshape Alien Skies Using JWST’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), researchers tracked how starlight filtered through different parts of WASP-121 b’s atmosphere. The findings revealed a dramatic contrast between the morning transition and the evening transition. The driver behind this strange weather is a planetary-scale jet stream. Superheated air on the dayside doesn’t stay still; it rushes toward the cooler nightside at extreme speeds. Because the planet rotates toward the east, these violent winds carry thermal energy around the globe and dump the bulk of that heat directly into the evening region. As a result, WASP-121 b’s evening atmosphere grows significantly hotter than its morning counterpart. Heat causes gases to expand, puffing up the evening sky like a inflated balloon. When starlight filters through this swollen atmospheric layer, it reveals an environment so fierce that water molecules cannot survive intact. Clouds of Metal and Torn Molecules In the searing furnace of the evening sky, chemical bonds break. Water vapor brought in from the dayside is torn apart by the heat, leaving behind a sky depleted of chemical stability. As those same winds continue their journey around the cold nightside, the atmosphere gradually cools down. By the time the air sweeps around to form the morning twilight, the story flips. Here, temperatures drop enough for chemical compounds to reassemble. Scientists suspect that in this cooler morning zone, minerals such as silicates condense out of the gas phase. Instead of water clouds like those on Earth, WASP-121 b’s morning sky likely features reflective clouds made of liquid rock or iron droplets. These metallic clouds block radiation from deeper layers, making the morning side appear even cooler to space observatories. A New Era of Exoplanet Meteorology Until recently, studying alien worlds meant treating entire planets as single, uniform points of light. This discovery demonstrates that modern space telescopes can resolve climate dynamics across distinct regions of a world hundreds of light-years away.   By capturing the contrast between a planet’s morning and evening, astronomers are moving from simply discovering exoplanets to mapping their active weather systems. WASP-121 b may be far too hostile for life as we know it, but understanding its violent atmospheric currents brings us one step closer to reading the skies of smaller, cooler, and potentially habitable worlds in the future.

    Kuwait introduces new regulations to strengthen e commerce sector

    Kuwait has introduced a comprehensive set of regulations for e commerce platforms aimed at improving consumer protection, increasing transparency and creating a unified legal framework for the country’s rapidly expanding digital marketplace. The new rules were issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry under Ministerial Resolution No. 109 of 2026 and came into effect on July 8. They apply to all online platforms involved in selling, ordering and delivering goods and services across Kuwait. Officials said the regulations were introduced to address the rapid growth of online shopping while clearly defining the responsibilities of digital platforms, merchants, delivery companies and consumers. The measures are also intended to encourage investment and promote fair competition within the sector. Under the new framework, companies operating electronic platforms must obtain the required licences and comply with existing commercial laws. They are also required to strengthen cybersecurity measures to protect their digital systems and safeguard customer data from misuse or cyberattacks. The regulations require platforms to display complete pricing information before customers confirm their purchases. This includes product prices, delivery charges, commissions and any additional fees. Platforms must also provide accurate information about merchants, publish clear terms and conditions and ensure that product descriptions are truthful and up to date. Businesses are now required to establish transparent policies for returns, exchanges and refunds. They must also create complaint handling systems that resolve customer issues within specified time limits while protecting consumers’ personal information. In addition, platforms must maintain proper records of electronic transactions and payments. The new rules also place responsibilities on delivery service providers to ensure goods are transported safely and delivered efficiently. Online platforms will be expected to supervise delivery operations and coordinate closely with merchants and delivery companies throughout the process. To prevent excessive charges, the ministry has introduced limits on service commissions. Platforms may charge a maximum commission of 17 percent when they provide delivery services and 10 percent when deliveries are handled directly by merchants. Consumer delivery fees have also been capped at one Kuwaiti dinar per order, with businesses prohibited from charging more than that amount. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has been given authority to monitor compliance with the regulations. Officials will be able to inspect businesses, request information and impose administrative penalties on companies that fail to follow the new requirements. Existing licensed platform operators must also update their registered business activity to reflect the category of managing delivery services through electronic platforms. The ministry said an implementation guide will be issued to help businesses, delivery companies and consumers understand the new compliance requirements. According to the explanatory memorandum accompanying the regulations, the reforms are designed to address problems that emerged with the rapid expansion of e commerce, including inconsistent commission rates, high delivery charges and unclear commercial practices. Officials believe the new framework will improve service quality, strengthen consumer confidence and support the continued growth of Kuwait’s digital economy.
