Pakistan increases Diyat amount by 97% to over Rs….

The federal government has significantly increased the value of diyat (blood money) for the fiscal year 2026-27, setting the amount at more than Rs. 19 million due to a sharp rise in silver prices. The new value represents an increase of nearly 97 percent compared to the previous year.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the official value of diyat has been fixed at Rs. 19,352,390 in accordance with the provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), 1860.

Under Pakistani law, diyat refers to the compensation paid by an offender to the heirs of a person killed in a criminal case. The amount is determined based on the value of 30,630 grams of silver, as outlined in Section 323 of the PPC.

The latest increase is mainly linked to the significant rise in silver prices. The diyat amount for the fiscal year 2025-26 was Rs. 9,828,670, meaning the new figure has almost doubled within one year.

The value of diyat has continued to rise in recent years due to fluctuations in precious metal prices. For the fiscal year 2023-24, the amount was fixed at Rs. 6,757,902, which was already a 56 percent increase from Rs. 4,318,524 in 2022-23.

Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code states that courts must determine the diyat amount while considering Islamic injunctions from the Quran and Sunnah, as well as the financial circumstances of both the convicted person and the victim’s heirs. However, the amount cannot be lower than the value of 30,630 grams of silver.

The law also requires the federal government to announce the value of silver through an official notification each year. This declared value becomes the basis for calculating the minimum diyat amount for that financial year.

The increase has renewed discussion over the method used to calculate blood money. In July 2025, a proposed amendment was introduced in the Senate suggesting that the minimum diyat calculation should be changed from 30,630 grams of silver to either 2,000 grams of gold or one-fourth of the assets owned by the convicted person.

The latest notification highlights how changes in precious metal markets can directly affect legal compensation amounts in Pakistan. As silver prices continue to fluctuate, the annual revision of diyat remains an important financial and legal matter affecting victims’ families and the criminal justice system.

Sidra Amin’s century in vain as Sri Lanka level ODI series

Pakistan suffered a heavy eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in the second women’s ODI despite a brilliant unbeaten century from opener Sidra Amin. After being asked to bat first, Pakistan posted 273 for five in their 50 overs. Sidra led the innings with a composed 100 not out from 120 balls, striking 13 boundaries. It was her seventh century in women’s ODIs. Ayesha Zafar added 49 from 45 deliveries, while Muneeba Ali scored 45. Captain Fatima Sana contributed a quick 25 from 18 balls to help Pakistan reach a competitive total. Sri Lanka, however, produced a dominant response and chased down the target in just 46.5 overs, winning by eight wickets and drawing the three-match series level at 1-1. The hosts’ chase was built around a record partnership between Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama. The pair put together 203 runs, the highest partnership for any wicket in Sri Lanka’s women’s ODI history and the team’s first 200-plus stand in the format. Gunaratne played an aggressive innings, scoring 123 from 123 balls with 11 fours and a six. Samarawickrama remained unbeaten after reaching her century, while Kavisha Dilhari provided the finishing push with an unbeaten 40 from 33 balls. Pakistan made an early breakthrough when Fatima Sana dismissed Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu for just one run. However, Gunaratne and Samarawickrama quickly took control and kept Pakistan’s bowlers under pressure. Sidra said Pakistan had adapted well to the conditions but needed to improve their approach against Sri Lanka’s slower bowling. She also acknowledged that the bowling attack needed to be more disciplined in the decisive match. She said Pakistan would look to bowl straighter and target the stumps to restrict Sri Lanka’s batters from opening up and scoring freely. With the series tied 1-1, both teams will now compete in the final ODI with the series trophy at stake.

Punjab boards introduce digital result cards

All nine educational boards across Punjab have approved a new Digital Result Card System to modernise examination records and make student services more accessible. Under the new system, boards will stop issuing traditional printed result cards to students. Instead, candidates will receive digital result cards through newly developed online result portals. Students will be able to download and print their certificates from home or use commercial printing facilities when needed. The move will also end the Rs550 fee that boards currently collect from each candidate for issuing conventional result cards at the time of admission. As a result, the boards are expected to lose a significant source of revenue. The first phase of the system will cover Class IX and First Year annual examination results. Class X and Second Year students will join the digital system in the second phase. However, students whose results were scheduled for announcement on August 6 will continue to receive printed result cards under the existing system. Board officials said digital result cards for both regular and private candidates will become available online immediately after results are announced. Regular students will access their certificates through their institutions’ online portals, while private candidates will download them directly from their respective board websites. The new certificates will carry QR codes and other security features to prevent tampering and allow educational institutions and employers to verify them electronically. Officials have also confirmed that digital result cards will have the same legal and official status as conventional certificates. They will remain valid for university admissions, employment, scholarships, equivalence certificates, document verification and other academic and official requirements. The initiative marks a major shift towards paperless examination services and is expected to make the process faster, more convenient and easier for students across Punjab.

PTI rift deepens as Salman Akram Raja, Mashal Yous…

ISLAMABAD: Differences within the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) have intensified as senior party figures Salman Akram Raja and Mashal Yousafzai exchanged allegations over party affairs and accusations related to the alleged sale of tickets. Salman Akram Raja criticised those who, according to him, were unable to pursue the matter through legal channels and had instead resorted to what he described as baseless allegations against Mashal Yousafzai over ticket-selling claims. Raja also said he did not know who had nominated Yousafzai as a senator, maintaining that the decision had been made on the instructions of PTI founder Imran Khan. He added that he did not have the authority to remove her from the Senate. In response, Mashal Yousafzai alleged that Raja had made his recent statements after apologising to the PTI founder. She challenged the party leadership to take action against Raja if it had the authority to remove him from the party. The dispute has also drawn comments from PTI leader Shandana Gulzar, who questioned Raja’s remarks concerning money. She raised questions over the whereabouts of millions of rupees allegedly received from the United States and said that those responsible would face serious consequences if the matter was investigated. The exchange has added to growing tensions within the opposition party, with allegations and counter-allegations emerging as its leadership continues to grapple with internal disagreements.

Two presiding officers arrested in Kotli over rigging claims as Rana Sanaullah demands election halt

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission has suspended and arrested two presiding officers in Kotli after they were caught transporting polling materials to a private residence instead of their assigned polling station. According to an election commission spokesperson, a returning officer intercepted the officers, seized the two polling bags, and appointed replacement presiding officers to ensure the voting process could continue at the station. The commission confirmed that formal legal proceedings are underway against the arrested officials, emphasising that negligence or irregularities will not be tolerated and that strict measures remain in place to guarantee transparent elections. Following the incident, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Rana Sanaullah demanded the immediate suspension of voting in the Kotli LA-10 constituency. Sanaullah urged the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir and the Chief Election Commissioner to launch an inquiry into the accused officials, named as Saqlain and Qaiser Patwari. Calling for polls in LA-10 to be halted until the investigation concludes, Sanaullah insisted on determining where the polling bags were being taken, noting that AJK Peoples Party President Chaudhry Yasin is contesting the constituency.
