Pakistan rejects Imran Khan’s sons’ allegation…

The Government of Pakistan has categorically rejected allegations by the sons of former Prime Minister Imran Khan that he has been kept under a seven-month communications blackout and denied access to his family, lawyers and doctors, terming the claims “unsubstantiated” and contrary to official prison records.

In a detailed response, the government said documented records showed that Imran Khan had continued to receive visitors, legal access and medical care during his imprisonment, rejecting what it described as an attempt to create an international controversy without evidence.

According to the government, since the beginning of his conviction, prison records show 198 meetings involving more than 900 visitors, including family members, legal representatives and political associates. It said Khan was also allowed a weekly meeting with his wife, with the latest meeting taking place on 4 August 2026, the same day his sons made allegations of a communications blackout during an appearance on CNN.

The government said prison authorities maintain records of approved visits and communications, including WhatsApp and landline calls with family members in Pakistan and abroad. It added that Khan’s last call with his son was recorded on 21 March 2026.

The statement said any temporary restrictions were imposed under Pakistan Prison Rules, court orders and security requirements applicable to high-profile prisoners, particularly due to political activities outside the prison.

“There is no prohibition on access; it is regulated under the law,” the government said, adding that prison meetings cannot be used as unrestricted political communication channels.

Rejecting claims regarding medical treatment, the government said Imran Khan had received regular medical examinations by specialist teams and medical boards from institutions including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Shifa International Hospital, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.

The government said Khan underwent treatment for a retinal condition, including five intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, specialist examinations and retinal imaging. It added that his latest specialist assessment was carried out in July 2026, with further medication and follow-up care prescribed.

According to the official statement, medical records describe Khan as “oriented and stable”, with no reported acute or unmanaged deterioration.

The government said disclosure of medical reports remained subject to legal procedures, patient confidentiality and ongoing proceedings before the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Addressing the issue of Khan’s sons’ travel to Pakistan, the government said the matter involved separate processes relating to NICOP and visa requirements. It stated that overseas Pakistanis holding a valid NICOP are eligible for visa-free entry and rejected what it called an attempt to present an administrative matter as political victimisation.

The statement also detailed the facilities provided to Imran Khan in prison, saying he was being kept in a separate compound with accommodation and amenities exceeding minimum requirements for prisoners in the same category.

The government maintained that Imran Khan was being treated according to constitutional guarantees, prison laws and court directives, while insisting that no individual was entitled to a separate legal framework or exemption from security regulations.

However, the government’s rightsizing drive has so far focused largely on gradual and limited measures. On Monday, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting of the sub-committee on rightsizing to review progress and discuss ways to speed up the implementation of approved reforms. According to the Finance Ministry, Waves 1 to 4 of the rightsizing exercise have largely moved forward following cabinet approval. Recommendations for Waves 5 and 6 have also been prepared and shared with relevant authorities, while work on Waves 7 and 8 is underway.

Every year the Sindh government declares a holiday for the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). This year’s announcement has been made in advance so that students parents and teachers can plan their schedules accordingly. It is important to note that educational institutions in Sindh are scheduled to reopen on August 3, 2026, after the summer vacation, before closing again the following day for the Chehlum holiday.

    The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has officially notified the results of the first phase of the Legislative Assembly elections. The notification confirms a strong performance by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the Mirpur Division. The PML-N won nine of the 13 seats contested in the first phase. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured the remaining four seats. The official notification formally declared all successful candidates elected. It also included their parentage, political affiliation and constituencies. In Mirpur district, four assembly seats were contested. The PML-N won two seats. Azhar Sadiq and Chaudhry Rukhsar Ahmed were declared successful. The PPP also won two seats in the district. Qasim Majid and Chaudhry Yasir Sultan secured victories for the party. The PML-N delivered its strongest performance in Bhimber district. The party won all three constituencies in the district. Colonel (retd) Waqar Ahmed Noor, Chaudhry Abdul Razzaq and Chaudhry Tariq Farooq were declared winners. Kotli district had six constituencies. The PML-N secured four of them. Umair Naeem, Raja Muhammad Asif, Raja Riasat Khan and Raja Ayaz Ahmed won their respective constituencies. The PPP captured two seats in Kotli. Malik Zafar Iqbal and Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin were declared successful. With the notification, the election authority has formally confirmed all 13 members elected from the Mirpur Division. The results give the PML-N an early advantage in the three-phase AJK election. The party now enters the next stage with nine seats from the first phase. The PPP has four seats and remains a key political force in the division. Attention has now shifted towards the second phase of polling. The second phase is scheduled for August 2. Voting will take place across the Muzaffarabad Division. The phase will include nine general constituencies in Muzaffarabad, Jhelum Valley and Neelum Valley. It will also include 12 reserved seats for refugees from Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir residing in Pakistan. The third and final phase will be held in the Rawalakot Division. The final phase will cover constituencies in Rawalakot, Sudhnoti, Bagh and Haveli. Political parties are expected to intensify their campaigns ahead of the remaining phases. The PML-N’s strong opening performance has increased pressure on rival parties. The upcoming rounds will determine whether the party can maintain its momentum across other divisions.

    US President Donald Trump reportedly left Türkiye on a military aircraft during a covert security operation last month. The move was allegedly made because of an Iranian assassination threat. According to a report citing US officials and people familiar with the operation, Trump initially boarded the older Air Force One aircraft in Ankara. Television cameras were present as he departed. Minutes later, however, Trump was reportedly moved to a smaller Air Force C-32A aircraft. The transfer was allegedly carried out using an airport catering truck. The unusual operation was designed to keep Trump’s actual location hidden. The report said the information was not shared publicly. Some journalists and even members of the White House staff were also reportedly unaware of the change. Trump had travelled to Ankara for a NATO summit held on July 7 and 8. The reported security threat emerged during his visit. The operation reportedly took place shortly after US forces resumed strikes against Iran. The strikes followed the collapse of negotiations between Washington and Tehran. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended the security arrangements. He said the aircraft being used as Air Force One had been equipped with advanced security measures. Cheung said the president faced threats from several enemies of the United States. He added that the administration was using all available measures to protect him. The reported security operation comes as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high. Trump has continued to leave open the possibility of stronger military action against Tehran. Oil prices rise amid escalation fears Global oil prices also climbed sharply as markets reacted to Trump’s latest comments on Iran. Brent crude rose around 5% on Monday. It reached about $87.70 per barrel, its highest level in nearly two weeks. US West Texas Intermediate crude also gained around 5.1%. It reached approximately $82.20 per barrel. The rise came after Trump said the United States still had the option of taking stronger action against Iran. Trump told reporters that Washington had the capability to pursue a major escalation if it decided to do so. His comments increased uncertainty over efforts to end the conflict. They also raised concerns about the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has claimed that the strategic waterway is open and fully under US control. However, he acknowledged that Iran could still attempt to interfere with maritime traffic. Iran has taken a different position. Tehran has reportedly demanded that the US lift its blockade before it agrees to fully restore the waterway’s operations. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes. Large volumes of crude oil and liquefied natural gas pass through the waterway. Any prolonged disruption could therefore put further pressure on global energy prices. Oil prices were also supported by reports of attacks involving energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and a tanker operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Meanwhile, US crude reserves remained under pressure. Stocks in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell below 300 million barrels last week. The reserve was reported at around 298.7 million barrels. It was the lowest level recorded since 1983.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Fazlur Rehman described the decision as a positive development. He said the hospital transfer should have been ordered much earlier. The JUI-F chief said the current political situation in the country should be assessed carefully before drawing conclusions. He also called for issues concerning the provinces to be discussed openly rather than reduced to simple political positions. Fazlur Rehman said the opposition had an important responsibility in a parliamentary system. He said opposition parties should identify weaknesses and shortcomings in government policies. He stressed that debates on provincial matters should focus on both principles and practical realities. According to him, political issues require serious discussion instead of being viewed only through the lens of support or opposition. The JUI-F chief also criticised what he described as a tendency in journalism to divide every issue into opposing camps. He said drawing a rigid line between supporting and opposing a position had contributed to worsening national problems. His remarks came after the Supreme Court ordered Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment. The court also directed authorities to facilitate regular meetings between Imran and his family. The ruling has been welcomed by several political figures, including members of the opposition. The court has also ordered the formation of a medical board to assess Imran’s condition and directed that his personal physician be given access.

Expressing his disappointment, Rokhri argued that paying a senior actor such a modest amount does little to support the country’s entertainment industry. He said artists deserve compensation that reflects their experience and contribution, adding that better financial investment is necessary if Pakistan’s film industry hopes to compete with larger regional markets. “If we want our film industry to grow and compete with Bollywood, then the budgets also need to match that ambition,” Rokhri said during the interview. He added that performers should be compensated accordingly if the industry expects high-quality productions and long-term development. Makho is an upcoming Pakistani film directed by veteran actress and filmmaker Sangeeta.
