Shaheen Afridi returns as Kandy Royals eye LPL 2026 Title push

COLOMBO: The Kandy Royals have received a timely boost ahead of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 playoffs, with Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi set to rejoin the squad for the tournament’s decisive knockout stage.

Afridi’s return comes as welcome news for the Royals, who are preparing for a high-stakes Eliminator after sealing a dramatic place in the playoffs. The left-arm fast bowler had briefly left the tournament last week due to personal commitments, leading to widespread speculation that his LPL campaign had ended. However, the franchise has confirmed that the Pakistan star will return just in time for the business end of the competition.

Adding further firepower to the squad, Kandy have also recruited Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah and explosive batter Hassan Nawaz. The trio is expected to significantly strengthen both the batting and bowling departments as the Royals chase their first LPL title in recent years.

The arrivals come following the departure of experienced all-rounder Moeen Ali, Afghanistan opener Sediqullah Atal, and Scotland international Brandon McMullen, who have left the squad after completing their commitments. Despite losing three key overseas players, Kandy management moved swiftly to secure quality replacements capable of making an immediate impact.

Kandy Royals’ road to the playoffs was anything but straightforward. At one stage, their qualification hopes appeared to be fading, but fortune smiled on the franchise when a rain-affected clash between Jaffna Kings and Dambulla Sixers produced the result they needed to advance. The dramatic turn of events kept their championship dream alive and set the stage for an exciting knockout campaign.

With Shaheen Afridi leading the pace attack once again, expectations among supporters have risen considerably. The Pakistani left-armer has consistently been one of the world’s premier white-ball bowlers, renowned for his ability to strike early with the new ball and deliver under pressure in crunch moments.

The LPL 2026 playoffs begin on August 5 at Colombo’s iconic R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. The opening day will feature a Qualifier between Jaffna Kings and Galle Gallants, while Kandy Royals will face Colombo KAPS in a must-win Eliminator.

Victory would keep Kandy’s title hopes alive and move them one step closer to lifting the LPL trophy. With Shaheen Afridi back in the lineup and two more Pakistani stars joining the squad, the Royals believe they have the experience, balance and firepower needed to challenge for championship glory in Sri Lanka’s premier T20 competition.

US official insists Gaza peace plan remains active despite Netanyahu’s rejection

A Board of Peace official confirmed on Monday that US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace framework remains operative, despite public pushback from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu rejected any withdrawal of Israeli forces until the Palestinian militant group Hamas is genuinely disarmed. His remarks came as the Israeli military  halted offensive operations in Gaza following pressure from Washington. The Board of Peace official emphasized that the initiative relies on phased implementation and verification on the ground, ensuring Israel makes no irreversible security concessions prior to confirmed compliance. Under the plan announced last month, Israeli forces would withdraw as Hamas disarms, paving the way for an International Stabilisation Force to partner with a newly formed Palestinian police unit. Negotiation roadmaps are being coordinated between the Board of Peace and Hamas while bilateral discussions with Israeli leadership continue.

Health Professionals, Community leaders strongly condemn transfer of renowned surgeon

THATTA — Senior medical professionals and community representatives have strongly condemned the sudden transfer of eminent surgeon Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani from Civil Hospital Makli to Civil Hospital Sujawal, calling the decision an unjustified move and a conspiracy against the hospital’s recent healthcare advancements. In a joint statement, prominent health leaders—including Dr. Sugra Parveen Uqaili, Dr. Ahmed Khan Zardari, Dr. Habib Jokhio, and Dr. Gul Qazi—expressed grave concern over the transfer, warning that it will derail the major improvements made in the Surgical Ward and cause severe hardship to poor and underprivileged patients who rely heavily on these services. The medical fraternity pointed out that prior to Dr. Hajani’s arrival, the surgical unit in Thatta District was severely under-resourced and largely limited to minor procedures such as circumcisions. Through Dr.Mashoque’s tireless dedication and technical expertise, the department was rebuilt into a fully functional unit capable of performing major and complex operations, including laparotomies, directly within the district. “The transfer of such a sincere, highly capable, and dedicated surgeon is detrimental to both the institution and the public interest,” the statement read. “Depriving Civil Hospital Makli of his services will only result in medical delays and hardship for patients who cannot afford private or out-of-district care.” The delegation has urgently appealed to the senior leadership of the Health Department and relevant authorities to immediately revoke the transfer order, allowing Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani to continue his transformative work at Civil Hospital Makli.

Houthi attack on Yemen’s Mokha leaves six dead

MOKHA: A Houthi attack on Yemen’s Red Sea port city of Mokha has killed six people, including two security personnel, according to a military official from Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The attack, which took place on Friday, targeted commercial vessels unloading cargo at the port, raising fresh concerns over the security of maritime activity along one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes. The military official said the Iran-aligned Houthi group fired five missiles at the vessels. The strikes reportedly hit the port area and caused fires to break out aboard two ships. The attack comes as tensions continue to rise across Yemen, with Houthi forces increasingly targeting areas controlled by the internationally recognised government. The latest violence has also added to concerns over the safety of commercial shipping operating near the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Mokha, historically known as Mocha, is located on Yemen’s western coast near the Bab el-Mandeb, a narrow maritime passage linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Its location gives the port significant importance for regional trade and shipping. The latest incident follows a series of Houthi attacks in and around Yemen’s government-held territories and against commercial vessels. The United Nations has warned that Yemen is at increasing risk of a return to wider conflict, with military activity intensifying despite the fragile calm that followed the 2022 truce. The renewed attacks have also raised fears of further disruption to international shipping. Maritime authorities continue to warn commercial operators about missile, drone and other threats in the southern Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb and Gulf of Aden. Details about the identities of those killed and the extent of damage to the vessels were not immediately available. The attack is likely to further deepen concerns about Yemen’s fragile security situation and the growing risks facing civilian and commercial activity along its Red Sea coastline.

Benny Blanco gives peek into Selena Gomez’s Italian birthday getaway

Benny Blanco is letting fans in on how he celebrated Selena Gomez’s birthday abroad. The 38-year-old music producer posted a TikTok video on Wednesday. The clip captured the couple’s time in Italy for Gomez’s 34th birthday, and instead of a big party, the two chose something more hands-on. They spent the day taking a cooking class together. The video showed them rolling out fresh pasta from scratch. They also prepared eggplant parmesan and a few other classic Italian dishes. At one point, the couple paused to toast with glasses of wine, adding a festive touch to the lesson. Blanco could not hide his excitement after tasting their eggplant parmesan. He told Gomez it was the best thing he had eaten in Italy so far. Gomez smiled and gave the credit right back to him, saying he was the one who made it. The clip also gave fans a glimpse of the Italian countryside surrounding them. Rolling hills and scenic views played in the background as the two enjoyed their day away from the spotlight. Toward the end of the video, Gomez was shown relaxing after the cooking session wrapped up. Blanco used the quiet moment to wish her a happy birthday on camera and told her that he loved her, capping off the sweet tribute. The couple’s Italian trip included more than just the cooking class. The night before, on July 21, they had dinner at Trattoria della Santa in Bologna. Married since September 2025, the pair have continued to share glimpses of their relationship, but this getaway felt especially personal. The restaurant’s owner, Riccardo Lelli, spoke about hosting the couple. He described them as absolutely amazing guests, and said that both Gomez and Blanco were kind and friendly throughout their visit. Lelli also noted that the couple made a point of thanking the staff. He said they appreciated both the food and the overall service during their meal. Fans have responded warmly to the birthday video, praising the couple for choosing a simple, meaningful way to celebrate rather than a lavish party. Many called the moment refreshing, especially given how public the couple’s relationship often is. For Gomez, turning 34 in Italy alongside her husband seems to have offered exactly the kind of low-key, joyful celebration she wanted.

Jennifer Garner recalls paparazzi chaos that impacted her children

Jennifer Garner has reflected on the overwhelming media attention her family faced during her marriage to Ben Affleck, revealing how relentless paparazzi coverage disrupted her children’s daily lives and created safety concerns for those around them. Speaking during a recent podcast appearance, the actress shared that photographers frequently followed the family wherever they went, often putting both the public and her loved ones at risk. She described situations in which multiple vehicles chased after her car, creating dangerous traffic conditions as photographers attempted to capture exclusive images. According to Garner, the constant pursuit extended beyond busy streets and public spaces. She recalled that photographers would drive onto private property and ignore normal traffic rules, turning ordinary errands into stressful experiences. The actress said the level of attention surrounding her family had become excessive and difficult to manage. Garner explained that the intense media presence eventually began affecting her children’s activities. She revealed that one of her children had to temporarily stop attending soccer practice because the large number of photographers and vehicles arriving at the venue created a disruption for everyone involved. The situation became so overwhelming that those responsible for organizing the activity reportedly requested that the family avoid attending for a period of time, as the attention was impacting other children and families as well. The actress said the issue went far beyond celebrity life, emphasizing that innocent children often bore the consequences of aggressive paparazzi behavior. She described the environment as one in which photographers were willing to go to great lengths to capture images of her family, regardless of the impact on others. Garner also spoke about the emotional challenges she faced as a mother while raising her children under constant public scrutiny. She explained that photographers frequently waited outside her home, making even routine tasks difficult. Taking a sick child to a doctor’s appointment or leaving the house for everyday responsibilities often became stressful because cameras and vehicles were already waiting nearby. She further recalled incidents in which young children leaving preschool were caught in the middle of the chaos created by photographers trying to reach either her or Affleck. Garner said such moments highlighted how the pursuit of celebrity photographs could place children in uncomfortable and potentially unsafe situations. Reflecting on those years, Garner suggested that the culture surrounding celebrity photography had become excessive, with the privacy and well-being of children often overlooked in the race for exclusive images. She stressed that young family members should never have to experience such pressure simply because of their parents’ public profiles. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck married in 2005 after several years together. The couple announced their separation in 2015, and their divorce was finalized in 2018. Despite ending their marriage, they have continued to co-parent their three children: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13. In recent years, both Garner and Affleck have spoken publicly about prioritizing their children’s well-being and maintaining a supportive co-parenting relationship. Garner’s latest comments offer a rare glimpse into the difficulties her family faced during the height of media attention, while reinforcing her belief that children deserve privacy and protection regardless of their parents’ celebrity status.
