Tennis, WTA makes genetic sex testing mandatory for women’s events

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has introduced a new eligibility policy requiring all players to undergo a one-time genetic sex test before competing in professional women’s tennis events.

According to British media reports, the new policy requires players to provide a cheek swab, blood sample or saliva sample to test for the presence of the SRY gene which is linked to the Y chromosome and plays a key role in the development of male biological characteristics.

Only players whose tests do not detect the SRY gene will be eligible to compete on the WTA Tour. If the test result is positive, further medical evaluation will be conducted.

Under the new policy, players must also sign a document acknowledging the rules. Refusing to undergo the test could result in disciplinary action.

Previously, under the WTA’s 2024 policy, transgender women were allowed to compete in women’s events if they maintained testosterone levels below the specified limit.

The WTA said the updated policy is intended to ensure fair competition and equal opportunities in women’s tennis while treating all players with respect and dignity.

  • FIFA chief Infantino faces mounting backlash

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing growing criticism over his controversial proposal to sell stakes in the governing body’s competitions to private investors, with opposition continuing to build from football officials, regional confederations and political figures. The latest criticism came from FIFA’s own chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, who issued a strongly worded statement questioning the proposal and calling on football leaders worldwide to carefully reconsider the direction of the organisation. Lamour described the initiative as “the project of one person,” suggesting it lacked broad institutional support. He also claimed that FIFA’s administration had been “deceived” regarding the proposal, adding that the time had come for football’s political leaders to ask difficult questions and make responsible decisions for the future of the sport. Although Lamour did not mention Infantino by name, his remarks were widely seen as a direct challenge to the FIFA president’s leadership. He stressed that the organisation’s employees remain committed to serving football rather than advancing the interests of any individual. “Our mission is to serve football,” Lamour said, adding that a FIFA president should unite people and inspire confidence rather than create division. He also acknowledged that speaking out could cost him his position but insisted he was prepared to accept the consequences in order to remain true to his principles. “If that means I lose my job, then so be it,” he said, adding that he would rather stand by his values than remain silent. The controversy intensified as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) became the third continental governing body to publicly oppose the proposal. In a statement, the AFC expressed solidarity with UEFA and Concacaf, arguing that the plan lacks the broad consensus necessary for such a significant change to world football. The AFC warned that the FIFA World Cup derives its strength from the participation of all confederations and football nations, saying any proposal that threatens the tournament’s unity and universal character should be reconsidered. Further pressure emerged when Carlos Cordeiro, one of Infantino’s senior advisers on global strategy and governance, announced his resignation. Cordeiro described the proposal as “a bad deal for football,” warning that it could mortgage the sport’s future by placing excessive commercial interests ahead of the game’s long-term stability.   Political criticism has also followed. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham condemned the proposal, calling it an “outrageous suggestion” and arguing that the plan demonstrated why Infantino was no longer the right person to lead world football’s governing body.   Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he had not discussed the proposal with Infantino despite their close relationship since Trump’s return to office in 2025.   The growing opposition could ultimately prove decisive if the proposal is put before FIFA’s 211 member associations. Infantino has indicated that a simple majority of 106 votes would be required for approval.   However, UEFA’s 55 members, Concacaf’s 35 associations and the AFC’s 46 members account for a combined 136 votes. If those member associations follow the positions taken by their respective confederations, the proposal would almost certainly fail to secure enough support. With resistance continuing to spread across the football world, Infantino now faces one of the biggest leadership challenges of his presidency, as critics argue that any major reform must be built on transparency, consultation and the collective interests of the global game.

Liverpool owners in talks to sell minority stake t…

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have confirmed they are in talks with British-Indian investor Amit Bhatia over a potential deal for a minority stake in the Premier League club. Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, is heading a consortium interested in buying into the 20-time English champions. An FSG spokesperson confirmed the approach from Bhatia’s group, stating: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.” The Financial Times reported that Bhatia has hired advisers to work on the offer, which could value Liverpool at more than $6 billion. Bhatia, who previously served as a director of Queens Park Rangers and vice-chairman of the club’s holding company, is a prominent figure in British football. He has expressed pride and gratitude for his time at QPR, thanking players, managers, staff, and fans for making him feel part of the QPR family for many years. His involvement with Liverpool would mark a significant step in his investment career, further cementing his presence in English football. The discussions between Bhatia’s consortium and FSG are believed to be at an early stage, with no deal struck yet. Any investment from Bhatia would be made to further position Liverpool for success, following FSG’s move in 2023 to sell a minority stake in the club to global sports investment firm Dynasty. Reports at the time valued that transaction between $100 million and $200 million. FSG, which bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010, has overseen a period of success for the club, including Premier League and Champions League titles. The potential sale of a minority stake to Bhatia’s consortium reflects FSG’s strategy of attracting strategic partners to support the club’s growth and competitiveness in an increasingly challenging football landscape. Bhatia’s consortium is the latest in a series of investment groups to express interest in Premier League clubs, highlighting the continued appeal of English football to global investors. If the deal proceeds, it would provide Liverpool with additional financial resources to invest in the squad and infrastructure, while Bhatia would gain a foothold in one of the world’s most iconic football clubs. The negotiations come amid ongoing speculation about the future of ownership at several top Premier League clubs. While FSG has maintained its commitment to Liverpool, the potential sale of a minority stake to Bhatia’s consortium suggests a willingness to explore strategic partnerships to secure the club’s long-term success. As discussions continue, Liverpool fans will be watching closely to see how any deal could impact the club’s future direction. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether Bhatia’s consortium can finalize a deal that benefits both the investor and the club.

Kevin Owens returns in style with SummerSlam victory

Kevin Owens made an unforgettable return to WWE after spending more than a year away from in-ring competition, defeating Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor and Gunther in a thrilling Fatal Four-Way match at SummerSlam 2026 Night Two. The victory marked a major milestone for the former Universal Champion, who had been sidelined since April 2025 due to a severe neck injury. The injury forced Owens to pull out of a scheduled WrestleMania showdown against Randy Orton and raised concerns about his wrestling future. After undergoing successful neck fusion surgery in July 2025, Owens spent over a year recovering and rehabilitating before finally receiving medical clearance to return to action. His comeback at Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium was kept completely under wraps, making it one of the biggest surprises of WWE’s biggest event of the summer. The match was originally announced as a one-on-one number-one contender’s contest between longtime rivals Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor. However, moments before the bout began, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis appeared on stage and announced that Gunther would also be entering the match, turning it into a Triple Threat contest. Just when fans thought the surprises were over, Kevin Owens’ entrance music suddenly blasted through the arena. The packed crowd erupted with excitement as Aldis revealed Owens as the fourth competitor, officially transforming the contest into a Fatal Four-Way match. The encounter quickly developed into one of the most exciting matches of the night. Each competitor had moments of dominance, delivering hard-hitting offense and producing several dramatic near falls that kept the audience guessing until the very end. Gunther looked poised to secure the victory after delivering a thunderous powerbomb to Finn Bálor. Before he could capitalize, Sami Zayn fought back with a trademark Exploder Suplex into the corner, shifting the momentum once again and bringing himself back into contention. Owens patiently waited for the perfect opportunity to strike. As the action reached its climax, he stunned Gunther with his signature Stunner before immediately turning his attention to Zayn, his longtime friend and former tag-team partner. Owens delivered another devastating Stunner, leaving Zayn unable to recover. Without hesitation, Owens covered Zayn for the decisive three-count, completing a remarkable comeback in his very first match after returning from injury. The emotional victory not only showcased Owens’ resilience but also proved that he remains a top contender despite his lengthy absence from WWE programming. Fans celebrated his successful return, with many calling it one of the most memorable moments of SummerSlam 2026. By winning the Fatal Four-Way contest, Owens also secured a guaranteed future WWE Championship opportunity against reigning champion CM Punk. The result immediately sets up a highly anticipated title clash between two of WWE’s biggest stars, adding another blockbuster rivalry to the company’s championship picture. After overcoming a career-threatening injury and an extended recovery period, Kevin Owens has officially announced his return to the top of WWE, and his impressive SummerSlam performance suggests that his journey back to championship gold may only be beginning.
