Thai Central Bank Cuts Rate to 1.25% Amid Growth Fears

BANGKOK — The Bank of Thailand (BOT) reduced its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point on Wednesday, moving to a more accommodative monetary stance in response to a slowing economy and heightened external risks. The unanimous decision by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) lowers the policy rate from 1.50% to 1.25%, effective immediately.

The committee stated the cut was necessary to ensure financial conditions support a fragile recovery and to ease the debt-servicing burden for vulnerable households. The central bank noted that the easing would also enhance the effectiveness of existing government financial measures.

In a downward revision of its economic forecasts, the BOT now projects gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 2.2% for 2025, followed by a sharper deceleration to 1.5% in 2026 before a modest recovery to 2.3% in 2027. The bank pointed to a persistent manufacturing slump and a decline in short-haul tourist arrivals as major factors dampening activity in the second half of this year.

Recent natural disasters have added to the economic pressure, with severe flooding in Southern Thailand expected to suppress activity into early next year. For 2026, the central bank warned that private consumption is likely to weaken as household incomes soften, while the export sector faces ongoing risks from potential new U.S. trade tariffs. The rate cut reflects the bank’s proactive move to mitigate these mounting headwinds.

Products of Chinese origin sold through the company and shipped to the US are now subject to taxes ranging from 10% to 87.5%, according to the filing. The company said it is considering several measures to manage the higher costs, including raising prices for American customers. Shein’s US revenue fell 14.3% to $2.04 billion in the first quarter, compared with $2.38 billion a year earlier. The US remains one of its most important markets, although its contribution to total revenue has declined. The company is also facing additional pressure in Europe. The European Union has introduced a €3 charge on low-value e-commerce imports, a move aimed at addressing concerns over competition from low-cost overseas sellers. Shein warned that the European market could experience an impact similar to, or greater than, the one seen in the US following the removal of the duty exemption. The retailer’s financial performance had already weakened in 2025. Its annual revenue increased by 8% to $41.85 billion, but net income dropped nearly 39% to $2.06 billion. Growth also slowed significantly compared with the previous year. Part of the latest quarterly loss was linked to a $328 million accounting charge related to the changing value of convertible preferred shares held by investors. Shein has also faced growing scrutiny over labour practices, environmental concerns and the impact of its business model. The company has defended its policies and said it maintains strict standards against labour abuses within its supply chain. Shein received approval from Chinese regulators for its Hong Kong listing in July, clearing an important hurdle after earlier efforts to pursue listings in New York and London did not materialise.

Speaking about the current regional situation, Noon alleged that following India’s defeat in last year’s conflict, New Delhi has been attempting to create instability in Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He warned that Pakistan would not allow any external force to undermine its sovereignty or destabilize the country. Noon said Azad Kashmir is an integral part of Pakistan and asserted that no power in the world could separate it from the country. He also criticized attacks and abusive behavior directed at the military, police and other state institutions, saying that such conduct would not be tolerated in any country. The federal minister said the government has previously responded to public demands by providing relief and would continue to address genuine concerns in the future. However, he firmly rejected calls to withdraw the voting rights and political representation of refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir living in Pakistan. According to Noon, removing the political rights of Kashmiri refugees would amount to betraying the sacrifices made by the Kashmiri people over decades. He maintained that refugees from occupied Kashmir must retain their right to vote and participate in the political process. The Kashmir Committee chairman also drew attention to the ongoing situation in Indian-administered Kashmir, alleging that Indian authorities continue to suppress the Kashmiri population. He said several Kashmiri leaders have remained imprisoned for decades, with some spending between 30 and 40 years behind bars. Noon further accused India of altering the demographic landscape of occupied Kashmir by issuing what he described as fraudulent domiciles to Indian citizens and facilitating their settlement in the region. He argued that those advocating the removal of refugees’ voting rights were, knowingly or unknowingly, supporting an agenda that serves India’s interests. He vowed that such efforts would not succeed and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the political and democratic rights of Kashmiri refugees. The minister called for unity on the Kashmir issue and said Pakistan would continue to raise its voice for the rights of the people of Kashmir at national and international forums.

    Teacher injured as roof plaster of school caves in

    SUJAWAL:* In a disturbing incident on Wednesday morning, a teacher of Government Boys High School, Begna Mori, within Taluka Jati of District Sujawal, was injured when cement plaster from the staff room fell on him. According to the Senior Head Master of the School, Aziz Allah Dino Khowaja, Junior Elementary School Teacher Fayyaz Zaur was present in the staff room, working on an official assignment, when the roof plaster fell on his head, leaving him critically injured. “As the blood started oozing from his head, we took him to Basic Health Unit Begna Mori for treatment,” said the Senior Head Master, adding that after treatment, the condition of the teacher had become stable. School Teacher Abid Inayat disclosed that the tender for the school’s refurbishment had been passed, and the contractor had demolished a portion of the school comprising three classrooms, but a few months ago he abruptly stopped the renovation work and has been evading resuming work. “Multiple efforts have been made to contact the missing contractor, but he is evading a response,” the teacher said. He further disclosed that the lives of 22 teachers, over a hundred students, and the lower staff had been at stake owing to the ramshackle condition of the building. The school, he said, is one of the schools with high enrollment, and such an incident would leave an adverse effect on the newcomers. The Head Master mentioned that they had approached the District Education Officer (Secondary), Sujawal, and other concerned authorities to ensure the safety of children, but to no avail. He urged the Sindh Minister for Education, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, to take speedy measures for resuming the renovation work of the school and to conduct a thorough probe against the fleeing contractor.

The statement noted that “his bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility,” and that he is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office” . Since his admission to hospital in mid-June, there has been limited communication and detail from McConnell and his office about his condition, leading to widespread speculation about his absence in Washington and on social media .
