Apple confirms ‘Welcome Home’ event for October 13 – and the dawn of the company’s smart home era

Apple has confirmed the expected special event for next week with a caption that appears to confirm the purpose. The Welcome Home event will take place on Tuesday October 13. Apple is widely expected to drop the first hardware to help pioneer its expansion into the smart home realm.

The announcement came via a teaser video from Apple exec Greg Joswiak showing children embroidering an old multi-coloured Macintosh logo. Per a media invite, the event will take place in trendy Tribeca, New York and will begin at 9:00am local time. That’s 2pm UK time.

Apple is expected to reveal a new Apple TV 4K, the HomePod mini 2, and a brand new product – the smart display dubbed HomePad. All three are thought to have been ready for a while, but the company has reportedly been waiting for the next generation Siri AI to launch before rolling out the hardware.

The company also may choose to unveil a number of new smart home gadgets made in partnership with LG. Just yesterday we saw regulatory images of a smart deadbolt lock, temperature sensor and smart thermostat emerge via the FCC in the United States. Apple is also thought to have a number of cameras in the works too, although it may be a little early for those products to arrive yet.

We’ll have full coverage of the event next Tuesday – here’s everything we expect from the Welcome Home showcase.
