iPhone Air 2 could match iPhone Duo in a really important way, but is a sequel even necessary?
Apple is still working on a successor to the iPhone Air according to a new ‘leak’ suggesting the device could be even thinner than the 2025 first-generation super-thin iPhone model.
According to the Naver blogger “yeux1122” Apple will be able to trim 0.4mm from the thickness. That could take it down from 5.6mm on the iPhone Air to 5.2mm on the sequel – a 7% reduction overall.
As MacRumors points out in its report, 5.2mm would make an iPhone Air 2 the same thickness as the forthcoming iPhone Duo when laid flat. Staying in line with the Duo could still justify having an Air – otherwise it’d be a little odd having a phone dubbed ‘Air’ with a thinner one available elsewhere in the portfolio.
The decrease in thickness wouldn’t affect the rumoured plans to integrate a larger capacity battery, according to the report. Previous rumours have suggested the phone will have a larger 3,500mAh cell compared to the 3,149mAh battery in the first generation model. The battery was a particular point of contention for our reviewer when the iPhone Air arrived last autumn.
“The battery life is predictably disappointing, if not as big an issue as you might think. The capacity is 3149mAh compared to the Pro’s 4252mAh and it shows,” our editor in chief Dan Graham said in his in-depth review.. “After a long day, you will need to charge it – or face being in the red during the evening. On one day, after a few hours of work away, it was down to around 20% – rather disappointing yet expected. Perhaps the biggest indication that battery life is a bit of an issue came from Apple itself – it sent all iPhone Air reviewers the MagSafe battery pack accessory as well.”
According to recent rumours the iPhone Air 2 could arrive in the spring of 2027 alongside the non-Pro iPhone 18 models.
