Did Apple’s latest macOS 27.2 beta just confirm the touchscreen MacBook Pro is imminent?

Apple is expected to release its first ever touchscreen MacBook Pro laptop in the near future. However, thus far that expectation has gone on reporting from reliable insiders rather than solid evidence or leaks. The situation just changed.

The new macOS 27.2 beta 3 release features a solid hint that the release of the software could coincide with the announcement of a touchscreen laptop from Apple, sooner rather than later.

Specifically, the new beta includes a long-press animation for icons in the macOS Dock. That doesn’t sound like a big deal in the grand scheme. Right now a long press on a MacBook trackpad is the equivalent of a right click. It simply brings up the options associated with the individual apps, like Keep In Dock, Open At Login and Show In Finder.

However, in macOS 27.3 a long press makes the icon slightly larger – mirroring the behaviour of apps iOS and iPadOS. Is that definitive proof that something’s in the works? No. Does it add to a wider narrative about the touchscreen MacBook? Well, absolutely!

Check it out below (via MacRumors).

Just yesterday, we got word from the reliable Apple watcher Mark Gurman who claimed the long-awaited touchscreen MacBook Pro will be here by the end of the year. The Bloomberg reporter’s latest update suggested the laptop will be “significantly lighter” than the current MacBook Pro M5 model, which weighs up to 4.8lbs in its 16-inch configuration.

Gurman also seems to think the M5 chip will continue its run the show, rather than a yet-to-be-announced version of the M-Series chips. He also says macOS Golden Gate will get an update to support touch (as mentioned here!) and the expected Dynamic Island within that tandem OLED display.
