New Sony PlayStation Portal could help it move closer to becoming a full-on handheld PS5
Sony may be planning a new version of its PlayStation Portal portable handheld gaming device, which could include an OLED display, judging by some new regulatory filings made by the Japanese giant.
Submissions made to the Wi-Fi Alliance registered two potential products going under the CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105 model numbers (via Zubi_Tech on X). There’s a case of putting two-and-two together here, but the model numbers in the CFI-Y100 series are the current PlayStation Portal models. So, it makes sense the CFI-Y2000 models are going to be an upgrade of sorts.
Considering there have been previous leaks suggesting an OLED PlayStation Portal would arrive before the end of 2026, it doesn’t take a genius to see where this might be going.
The PlayStation Portal handheld has been around since 2023 as a dedicated Remote Play device whereby users can stream action from their home console over Wi-Fi.
Since then, it has also become a means of streaming games from the PlayStation Plus Premium catalogue over the cloud. Sony has been gradually improving the device over time, including a 1080p High Quality mode that “prioritises high video quality and uses more data” compared to the standard 1080p mode that prioritises stable performance.
It still not quite a handheld PS5 or a Vita 2 but it’s is getting closer. Conceivably now, you can buy the PlayStation Portal for a couple of hundred bucks, get a PS Plus Premium membership, enjoy games from that library, and digitally buy the games you want to play without the need for a PS5 console at all. An OLED version of the handheld would improve the proposition further. Watch this space.
