Samsung gives official first look at Galaxy Z Fold 8 and more: A Practical Look
Earlier this week, Samsung confirmed the date for its next Galaxy Unpacked launch event and has now given us our first official look at the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as well as other new devices.
Despite the name, this is the all-new widescreen format of the folding phone, which will rival the iPhone Ultra. Meanwhile, the taller shape we’re used to will be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
The teaser comes via Spider-Man as the upcoming ‘Brand New Day’ movie comes to cinemas on 31 July. In the shot, he can be seen shooting a web at a new phone, which appears to be the new Galaxy Z Fold 8.
While it’s only a tiny glimpse, there are already a few things we can learn from it.
For starters, we can see there are just two camera modules on the back, so as predicted by rumours, the phone won’t have a telephoto lens like the Ultra.
We can also see the power button and volume rocker positioned much closer to the top of the phone, again hinting at the short stature of the new phone.
The bezel around the front screen looks very thin and the colourway of the Z Fold 8 in the teaser looks to be the new Lavender hue, we think.
‘A brand new shape’ trailer
Since that first teaser, Samsung has released an almost 2-minute trailer, which confirms the ‘brand new shape’ of the wide format Z Fold 8 as well as other upcoming devices.
In the clip, we see various devices (screenshotted below for convenience), starting with what looks like the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 worn by Spider-Man’s sidekick, Ned. We also see two different Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phones (possibly the Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8) with an overall focus on durability.
Spiderman’s AI assistant then builds him an additional device “to stay one step ahead” (perhaps a jab at the iPhone Ultra coming later), which looks to be the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It’s described as “A new shape perfect for communications with Detective DeWolfe.”
Only the device is effectively blurred out by strategically placed lens flare, so Samsung wants to keep this one under wraps until its official announcement.
Just the Galaxy Watch 9 seems to be missing. You can see the full trailer below.
We don’t have too long to wait for all the official details for the new Galaxy Z phones and Galaxy Watches as Samsung Unpacked will take place on 22 July in London.
