Scholars in the Field, from The Piston Foundation: A Practical Look
The depth of knowledge that exists within the BaT community is unfathomable, and we are ever indebted to the folks who come here to share their expertise, day in and day out. After all, what makes car culture a “culture” in the proper sense is that information and traditions are passed down, and that’s why we are firm believers in the mission of the Piston Foundation. We’ve been proud to support their work over the years, and have funded dozens of scholarships for students who are now working all over the country, restoring and maintaining all manner of classic and enthusiast vehicles. Their new video series, Piston Scholars in the Field, is a testament to the success of their efforts.
According to Jeff Mason, Co-Founder and President of the Piston Foundation, “Young technicians are stepping into the craft of automotive restoration—not casually, but with intention. They are choosing to learn how to shape metal, rebuild engines, tune carburetors, stitch interiors, and preserve the machines that define car culture. They are not chasing trends. They are committing to a trade.
Over the past four years, the Piston Foundation has focused on one essential barrier: access. Since 2022, 83 scholarships totaling nearly $300,000 have been awarded to students pursuing careers in restoration, collection management, and vintage motorsports. In 2025 alone, 30 scholarships were awarded—the largest class yet. Ninety-seven percent of recipients complete their school year, and graduates are already entering the field.”
These videos feature intelligent, capable young people who have chosen to preserve history by working with their hands, and we couldn’t be happier for them. Their stories are fascinating, and we hope that their work speaks to younger members of the BaT community who might be inspired to pursue similar paths.
