A Look at baT Auction Success Story: On the Road to Air|Water in a 930 Turbo
BaT member FastCarJoe brings us our latest Success Story, about the Porsche 930 Turbo that he won from Makellos_Classics in an April 2025 BaT auction:
Sometimes a car purchase feels destined from the start. That’s exactly how it happened with my modified 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo, which I spotted on Bring a Trailer just as our group of 10 friends was planning a trip to California for the Luftgekühlt Air|Water show.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. My fiancée and I had been eyeing the auction all week, talking through the decision late into the evenings. When the final moments arrived, we watched the bids climb together, and when the hammer dropped, we celebrated the win like a dream had just come true. The twist? Our hotel for the Air|Water weekend, which we booked months earlier, was less than an hour from Makellos Classics, where the car happened to be located. If that’s not car fate, I don’t know what is.
Seeing the 930 in person for the first time was unforgettable. Makellos Classics had performed a comprehensive restoration and rebuild, transforming the car into a stunning blend of period character and modern precision.
Finished in Oslo Blue over black leather and Alcantara with blue and white plaid inserts, it looked even better in person than it did in the listing.
The 3.5-liter turbo flat-six paired with its RUF five-speed gives this one an entirely new level of engagement. It’s something you can only truly appreciate once you’re behind the wheel. Before handing over the keys, Matt Kenyon—owner of Makellos Classics—took me out for a drive to show me how to properly work through the dog-leg gearbox and feel the car’s rhythm. It was the perfect introduction to a truly special machine.
Taking delivery with my friends and heading straight for the Pacific Coast Highway was the highlight of the entire experience. With my fiancée in the passenger seat and the turbo spooling against the backdrop of the ocean, the moment felt like the culmination of everything we love about cars: freedom, connection, and the stories that come with them.
Thanks to Bring a Trailer and the Makellos Classics team—the process from auction to delivery was seamless and unforgettable. What began as a spontaneous bid turned into one of the most memorable trips and drives of our lives. Now, the 930 has made its way home to Houston, Texas, where it’s already become a treasured part of our collection and a lasting reminder of that incredible week on the West Coast.
