    “Lets talk about tires. It was noted that I spend tons of money restoring these Elans and then use cheap tires. There is a very limited selection of 13″ tires available. You can’t just go to Tire Rack and get Michelin Pilot Sports. They just don’t make them in 13”.
    The original tire on an early Elan was a bias ply 145 series. Very narrow. Although you can get some 145 or 165X80 series tires, I prefer the slightly wider but not any taller 165X65X13 tires. They fit the wheel well and still have…”

Never knew it was anything other than as-expected and normal when I’d wait for my Car and Driver, Road & Track and Auto Week magazines to arrive in the mail to immediately read from front to back beginning as a 6 or 7 year old in the 70’s.
    No wonder I became a car nut. It can be attributed to the brilliant authors of the articles written by these guys.

    “Over the past fifty years, we’ve owned too many Saabs to count and a few Porsches along the way. An older perfectly maintained low miles Porsche comes through BaT every week. However, those who own Saabs enjoy the wheels off them. A Porsche is often a third or fourth car in a stable. A Saab is the daily driver and gets the miles. That as many have survived is testament to those who love Saabs really love them and will put in more time and money out of love, knowing it’s not a rational…”

    “Happy 9/28! I’ve owned many cars since I started driving in 2009, and the 928 remains my favorite car of all time. I’ll occasionally go lengthy periods without driving one (months at a time), and begin to question whether something else is worthy of that mantle in my own mind. Then I’ll hop into one and go for a drive, immediately erasing any doubt that it remains top dog.”

    Here’s the Icons of Zuffenhausen Collection, from Wob

    In the German state of Baden-Württemberg, on the northern edge of the city of Stuttgart, lies the borough of Zuffenhausen. Humans have lived here continuously for over 7,000 years, and 75 years ago, they began doing something very special: building Porsches. In this Icons of Zuffenhausen collection, Wob has assembled some of the best of the breed. Some are cars that defined the Porsche brand as we know it today, like a veteran 356 racer and a sublime ’73 Carrera RS. Others are cars that seek to stretch the definition of what a Porsche can be, like a one-off Spyder prototype racer, a hyper-exotic 918 Spyder, and a 992 GT3 R Rennsport—perhaps the ultimate track weapon. This is the second collection of incredible high-performance Porsches from Wob, and we’re very excited to see the cars start to go live this evening, Monday, September 29.

    “I absolutely LOVE photo #321: the huge stack of renewal stickers! Most of us peel them off once a stack of five or so piles up, but to leave them all on there for so many years took dedication and a degree of skill.
    This is a such a cool package, even without the amazing ownership history. Only things I’d do is get the A/C working, and replace that modern CD player with something vintage or at least vintage looking.”

  • BaT Auction Success Story: OttoBob Shifts Gears to an E46 Sedan — Explained

    This Success Story comes to us from OttoBob, who won this 2003 BMW 325i Sport sedan from SterlingM5 in an April 2025 BaT auction:
    I really have to thank Tim Morris of German Master Tech in Bend, Oregon, for suggesting I look at this car. Tim has been working on my BMWs for many years. A couple of years ago, I acquired an E46 convertible that lives at my Southern California home. It’s Orient Blue with a gray leather interior and—unusual for me—an automatic transmission. I reasoned it was beneficial for driving on the 101 and 405.

    “I’m the previous owner of this rig. We used it primarily as a rolling billboard for our RV Campground… had our logo on the side. Really drew attention. I can tell you it really drove better than I expected, several hundred miles freeway and highway with no issues. I did add LT tires on the back as well as the booster shocks to help with rocking/swaying. It’s much lighter than it looks, when i bought it three of us picked it up by hand and loaded it on a trailer.”

    “Clearly this was an emotional purchase. This is SAAB Number 19 for me, started with 3 cylinder 2 cycles, a pile of 99’s including a 78 Turbo, and then on to the 900s. My wife converted from GM to SAAB with an 83 Turbo before we were married then a 87 Turbo that we brought both daughters home from the hospital in. Daughters still driving 9-3’s we bought them in high school.
    My wife really really wanted this car, so as a good husband I had to get it done.”

    “On vacation in Europe with my parents in 1965 we were in traffic next to a Ferrari similar to this. Have a vague recollection of the paler blue metallic, a far stronger impression as the traffic cleared was the howl as it disappeared down the road.
    My father didn’t give chase in our Austin 1100.”

    “Long ago,(Y2Kish) my parents owned a small apt complex where a 85 year old lady was a long time tenant. She had a Fairlane almost identical to this, but a coupe, with an automatic. And she patronized a muffler shop with a sense of humor. I hope they didn’t charge her too much for making it sound almost exactly like a GT350. Braaaap!
    The dog dish hubcaps found both here and on Mrs. Nitzkowski’s Fairlane reminded me of her Humane Society bumper sticker. “It’s OK if my dog is driving.…”
