    “Somewhat related, gearhead Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) took part in a documentary “La Carrera Panamericana” in the early 1990s, which is just awesome. Wonderful cinematography of the actual race, with Pink Floyd as the soundtrack.
    I stumbled upon the VHS in a bargain bin in the mid-’90s, but it’s all over YouTube now.

    This Success Story comes to us from BaT member Osramicus, who won this modified Thunderbird replica from Mater21 in an August 2025 BaT auction:
    I wasn’t planning on buying a car that day. Really, I wasn’t. I had just moved on from owning a project car. To my shame, the project had been abandoned. I had kept it with me from a single-man garage to a married-man garage and finally to a family-man garage, stealing a valuable parking spot meant for my wife’s car everywhere we lived. I sold it to a coworker who I knew could handle the work. If I ever bought something else, I was given one non-negotiable directive from the boss—it must be 100% running and complete.

    It was a couple weeks ago. Two in the morning and my brain wouldn’t shut off so I couldn’t get to sleep. I laid restlessly in bed for a while, listening to the alarm clock on my nightstand tick. And tock. And tick. And tock. Reminded me of how I used to tell my clients if they found themselves wide awake in bed in the middle of the night, rather than tossing and turning and fretting and burning about not being able to sleep they’d be better off to follow their body’s lead and get up and do something—anything really—as long as it was healthy and relaxing. So, I clucked my tongue and shook my head then rolled out of bed. Walked into the living room and clicked on a light. Thought about reading but had read every book in the house at least twice. Thought about turning on the tube but knew there’d be nothing on at that hour that would interest me. Thought about having a snack but wasn’t really hungry and was still doing pretty well on my New Years’ diet. Then an idea of what I could do struck me. Something that would be both healthy and relaxing. I could go for a drive.

I really appreciate the BaT community’s comments throughout this auction; they really helped me form a more fulsome picture of the car. The debate on condition is always entertaining, and really a personal preference thing. To me, this is as cool as it gets: a (nearly) guilt-free driver with character that’s impossible to replicate.     This Success Story comes to us from BaT member Canoethrasher, who won this 2007 Honda Element SC from The_Dude_Abides in an April 2025 BaT auction:
    It was a typical Monday. I was doing patient rounds at the hospital when my phone rang. Thinking it was the traditional spam call at 1:00 PM, I silenced the call, expecting to see a local area code and no voicemail left. But to my surprise, an East Coast number left a detailed voice message. “Congrats on the win!” I thought these scammers were really getting creative, until I remembered that I had placed a bid on a gorgeous Root Beer metallic Honda Element SC an hour ago. No way—I had won. Every car I’d previously hunted on BaT escaped my grasp during the final two minutes. I was usually meticulous in my browsing and bidding, scrutinizing every photo and comment. But after several recent losses in bidding wars, I admit that I basically saw Root Beer metallic and placed a bid.

    “@volvoracer9 – That is an excellent question. The guy who created this went to great lengths to make it accurate. As far as I have found, everything is correct except the brakes/wheels/hubs. A true MC850 will have 4 bolt wheels and hubs with a different front brake caliper. I put on adjustable Spax shocks but the original Koni shocks come with it. Engine and head are correct for MC850 as is the entire interior including the rear seat which is basically cushions on top of a storage bin. Club…”
