Question of the Week: If You Could Resurrect One Model as a 2025 Car, What Would It Be?—WINNER’S UPDATE: A Practical Look

WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:

We’re back to announce the winner for our Question of the Week, where our victor will accept a $25 credit for a hat or T-shirt from the BaT Gear Store and the acclaim of their peers.

Our question this week was: If you could resurrect one model as a 2025 car, what would it be?

Many of you staked your claims on a wide variety of cars, ranging from sensible-yet-fun commuters to dependable mini trucks (remember when trucks weren’t huge?). In the end, there can only be one winner, and we’re giving the prize to the most popular nomination (the People’s Choice!), which was the Saab 900. BaT member @AsherSPG, obviously a Saab devotee judging by the username, was the first to it:

The Saab 900 was an evolution of the 99, and in turbo form, it was genuinely fast. Above all, it was an engineering marvel and a safe one to boot. On that note, we’ll let James May and Jeremy Clarkson take it away:

All good reasons to bring back the Saab 900. We’ll take ours in SPG spec. Congratulations, AsherSPG! Be sure to check your email to claim the prize.

Now, let’s take a look at a number of other notable nominations from this week’s discussion thread:

The B13 SE-R certainly earned quite the reputation in its day, including with our colleagues over at Car and Driver: “Every time we drive Nissan’s new Sentra SE-R, we think BMW 2002.”

The GXP was a performance CUV introduced at a lower price point to compete against its European rivals. Why not?

That’s a good lot, @Frank_Barrett.

A body-on-frame, rear-wheel sedan would certainly be much appreciated.

We wish we could feature them all, but we’ll stop here in the interest of time. Thanks to everyone who chimed in, and congratulations once again to our winner, AsherSPG! We’ll be back with a new question soon.

ORIGINAL POST:

Welcome to the BaT Question of the Week! For those unfamiliar, here are the rules: we ask an automotive-themed question, and the author of our favorite answer from the comments is awarded a $25 credit to the BaT Gear Store.

Every year, some models disappear, and others return wearing the familiar names of yesteryear. These revivals often share little with their predecessors apart from a badge, but we like to daydream about rebooting certain bygone favorites for 2025, with the style, performance, and characteristics of their inspiration faithfully reinterpreted for the present day. Hence this week’s question:

If you could resurrect one model as a 2025 car, what would it be?

In a world filled with large appliances overloaded with haptic buttons and touch screens, a simple, zippy roadster like a Honda S2000 feels exactly like what the world needs right now.

Or maybe something creative, futuristic, and quirky, like the Citröen SM, would shake the car-buying masses out of their stupor.

The possibilities are seemingly endless. So now we pass it over to you:

If you could resurrect one model as a 2025 car, what would it be?

Tell us all about it in the comments, and give a thumbs-up to any stories that grab your attention. We’ll announce the winner on Monday.

Question of the Week: What’s Your Favorite Animated Car of All Time?—WINNER’S UPDATE

    WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:

We’re back to announce the winner for our Question of the Week, where our winner will receive their laurels in the form of a $25 credit for a hat or T-shirt from the BaT Gear Store.

This week, we asked: What’s your favorite animated car of all time?

Thanks to everyone who participated! We filled up our cereal bowls, flipped on the screen, and went straight to work reviewing your nominations. There was no ignoring that Speed Racer’s gadget-packed Mach 5 received a bulk of the nominations, with 18 mentions as of this writing! So we’re handing the prize to the user who first nominated it—@ConnMan1966!

“Hands Down the Mach5. There is no contest here people. The homing pigeon, the car drives under water, the jump jacks, extension saws! And that profile and the cold start at the beginning of the cartoon! Epic!”

Our question this week: What’s your favorite piece of automaker lore?

Thanks to everyone who wrote in! We’re leaning heavily on the People’s Choice, and this week’s winning nomination is a tale of a cash grab, in the literal sense. We’re handing the prize to BaT member @angushopper, who submitted the most-liked comment this week for the Carroll Shelby $100 Challenge:

    “The Carroll Shelby $100 Challenge:
To demonstrate the raw power of his 427 Cobra, Shelby would tape a $100 bill to the dashboard and if a passenger could reach out and grab it while he launched the car under full acceleration the passenger could keep the money.
Allegedly no one was ever able to grab the bill.
I have no idea of the veracity of this story but have heard it most of my life.”

Our compatriots over at Car and Driver tested a 427 Cobra in their November 1965 issue and noted that “[it] does accelerate and decelerate at unbelievable rates, as the figures should imply.” We’ll leave it at that. Either way, it’s a great piece of automotive lore.

Congratulations, angushopper! Be sure to check your email to claim the prize.

Now, let’s take a look at some other popular nominations from this week’s discussion thread:

“Enzo’s dismissal of Ford during the failed merger, and noting that they made ugly little cars in an ugly factory lit a fire that we still benefit from today. The GT40 is one of my favorite cars to hear, and see in motion and at a standstill.
P.S. – I wonder what he would think of the ugly little Luce ;)”

Question of the Week, Pennzoil Edition—What’s the Oldest Car You’ve Driven Daily?—WINNER’S UPDATE: A Practical Look

    WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:

It’s time to announce the winner of our second Pennzoil edition of QotW inspired by their Long May We Drive mantra! Our champion will be awarded some limited edition Pennzoil swag in addition to the traditional $25 credit to the BaT Gear Store.

Our question this week was: What’s the oldest car you’ve driven daily?

Normally, being “over the hill” isn’t usually a compliment, but daily driving an older (never say “obsolete”) car takes some serious chutzpah. So this week, we’re choosing the absolute oldest vehicle still being driven today. Right now, in 2025, BaT member @fomocoguy‘s daily driver is a prewar car from 1940, making him this week’s winner:

“Still driving my 1940 Plymouth every day. Can always count on it now that I’ve installed an 8-volt battery. Not much to go wrong with it that sidelines it. And it’s a hoot to drive, always a conversation with someone at every stop I make.”

    WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:

We’re back to announce the winner for our Question of the Week, where our victor will accept a $25 credit for a hat or T-shirt from the BaT Gear Store and the acclaim of their peers.

Our question this week was: What’s the one vehicle that best describes your taste in autos?

Thanks to everyone who participated! Even in the midst of the holiday season, you still managed to rack up more than 100 comments. Narrowing your automotive taste down to a definitive example is tough work, so there’s really no wrong answer here. That said, this is a contest at the end of the day, and the 240-Series Volvo earned the most mentions this week. BaT member @PWSchuh was first to nominate a 245 Turbo specifically, but since he’s still coming off an early 2025 win, we’re passing the award to the runner-up—@Sjalabais!

“You guys at BaT always pick so pitch perfect lead images. I’m baffled by how well you keep answering your own questions of the week, visually.
Yes, I am a Volvo guy. Everything cubist that looks like a five year old lead the design team goes straight into my heart. Volvo 140, 240, GAZ 24, Toyota Century or, my current only collectible, a 2003 Centennial JS350. Looks like a peak-’80s product, hit the market in 1998.”

  • Question of the Week: What’s a Great Car That Would’ve Been Better with AWD?—WINNER’S UPDATE: A Practical Look

    WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:

We’re back to announce the winner for our Question of the Week, where our victor will accept a $25 credit for a hat or T-shirt from the BaT Gear Store and the acclaim of their peers.

Our question this week: What’s a great car that would’ve been better with AWD?

We read through the 100-plus comment thread, where many of you made the case for some great cars. This week we’re choosing the comment that most stood out to us (Editorial Privilege!) and awarding the prize to BaT member @StudebakersandSaabs, who nominated the Volkswagen Corrado SLC:

“The Volkswagen Corrado, especially the SLC, would have been improved with AWD.
Virtually all the parts existed in VW parts bin to do it, it’d be a mashup of Rallye Golf and Syncro Passat to complete the driveline, but everything did exist to make that a reality.
It’s not a COMMON swap, but a few Syncro Corrados have been made by enthusiasts over the years, and it’s a pretty OE-looking conversion.”
