Understanding bYD Fang Cheng Bao teases Tai 9 as full-size boxy SUV nears debut

Fang Cheng Bao, the personalized vehicle brand under BYD (HKEX: 1211), released a teaser video for its new Tai 9 (or Ti 9) on Sunday, the first time the brand has officially previewed the sport utility vehicle (SUV).
The video shows the model’s side silhouette. Xiong Tianbo, general manager of the Fang Cheng Bao business unit, said on Weibo that “it won’t be a long wait,” suggesting the vehicle’s debut is drawing near.
The silhouette shows the Tai 9 carrying over the boxy styling and floating roof design of the Tai series, with a noticeably larger footprint.
Xiong revealed on June 30 via Weibo that the Tai 9 and the Formula S sedan would go on sale in the second half of the year, adding that both models were still being refined.
The Tai 9 is a boxy full-size SUV measuring more than 5.3 meters long with a wheelbase of over 3.1 meters, making it larger than the Bao 8, according to information that has circulated widely on Chinese social media.
The model is expected to come with a six-seat layout, though some rumors suggest it will offer five-, six- and seven-seat configurations.
Spy shots of the interior suggest the center console may adopt a long connected-screen design, paired with a full digital instrument cluster and a head-up display (HUD).
On the powertrain, some rumors say the Tai 9 will carry over the Bao 8 SUV’s 2.0T engine plus dual-motor system, with combined output of 550 kW (738 hp) and combined torque of 760 Nm.
Other rumors say the vehicle will use BYD’s fifth-generation DM-i plug-in hybrid all-wheel-drive system, with a combined range of more than 2,300 kilometers on a full tank and a full charge, according to an Auto Home report on Monday.
The model is expected to use a unibody structure paired with the DiSus-P Ultra intelligent hydraulic suspension.
In Fang Cheng Bao’s current lineup, the Bao 5 and Bao 8 target the rugged off-road market, while the Tai 3 and Tai 7 focus on urban and family use.
The addition of the Tai 9 will fill the brand’s gap in the full-size SUV segment, extending its coverage from the compact class to the full-size class.
Fang Cheng Bao is a new energy vehicle brand launched by BYD in August 2023, positioned between the mass-market Dynasty and Ocean lineups and the ultra-premium Yangwang brand.
The brand sold 41,213 vehicles in July, up 190.64% year-on-year and 15.74% from June. Its cumulative sales in the first seven months of the year were 200,687 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
