Deepal, the electric vehicle brand of Changan Automobile (SHE: 000625), will begin pre-sales of the revamped Deepal S05 SUV (sport utility vehicle) on July 30, bringing new features and upgrades to the model.

Deepal CEO Jiang Hairong (Harrison Jiang) announced the timing on Weibo on Wednesday, saying pricing will be disclosed when pre-sales begin.

The Deepal S05 was initially launched in China in October 2024 and currently has a starting price of 116,900 yuan ($17,220). It is available in battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants.

The biggest change to the updated model is the addition of LiDAR. Deepal described it on July 22 as a “global stylish intelligent SUV with LiDAR,” while teaser images showed the vehicle equipped with LiDAR and blue indicator lights for its assisted-driving system.

Deepal chairman Deng Chenghao said the vehicle’s smart-cockpit chip has been upgraded to a 3 nm process, significantly improving system responsiveness.

The current Deepal S05 measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm.

Its BEV version is powered by an electric motor with a maximum output of 272 hp and is available with 56.12 kWh and 68.82 kWh battery packs, providing CLTC ranges of 520 km and 620 km, respectively.

The current EREV version has a CLTC battery-only range of 200 km and a combined range of 1,234 km. Its fuel consumption with a depleted battery is 4.35 liters per 100 km.

In addition to the S05, Deepal’s lineup includes the SL03, L06 and L07 sedans, as well as the S05, revamped S07, S09 and G318 SUVs.

Deepal is an NEV brand unveiled by Changan in 2022. Its first model, the SL03, was launched in July 2022 as a rival to Tesla‘s (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model 3.

Deepal sold 33,625 vehicles globally in June, up 12.5% year-on-year and 1.2% from May, it said earlier this month. Its cumulative sales reached 164,156 vehicles in the first half of 2026, an increase of 14.6% from a year earlier.

The brand has delivered about 900,000 vehicles since its inception, with overseas markets becoming an important source of growth.

Deepal announced in December that it had completed a 6.122 billion yuan Series C funding round, bringing in 2 new shareholders: Chongqing state-owned Yufu Holding Group and CMB Financial Asset Investment, a subsidiary of China Merchants Bank.

Changan retained a 51% stake in Deepal after the financing. Deepal said the funding round was expected to accelerate its development.

CATL and Changan jointly unveiled a passenger vehicle model equipped with sodium-ion batteries, slated for market launch in mid-2026.
