I used to think you couldn’t wear black and brown together. My mother told me this when I was maybe nine and I believed her for about twenty years. Then one autumn my sister showed up in a black turtleneck and camel trousers and looked like a million bucks, and I quietly rethought my entire life.
So this post is a bit of a love letter to color pairings I once thought were off-limits.
Black and brown, of course. But also black and red, and black and burgundy, which is its own moody little world.
20 Color Pairings I Reach for All Autumn Long
Black Blazer With Brown Trousers
This is the one that started it all for me. A black blazer With brown trousers is the grown-up, put-together version of tossing something on and hoping for the best. It looks intentional even when it absolutely is not.
I like a chocolate or camel trouser here so there’s a clear contrast with the black. Add a simple white tee underneath and gold earrings and you’re done. This brown and black outfit is the one I wear when I want to look like I have my act together.
Brown Leather Jacket With Black Jeans
Honestly, if I could only keep one jacket forever it might be a brown leather one. So warm, so easy. Thrown over black jeans it has this slightly rugged, slightly polished thing going on that I cannot get enough of.
Add ankle boots (brown or black, both work) and you have a look for coffee runs, school pickup, everything.
Black Turtleneck With Brown Satin Skirt
Now we’re getting a bit fancier. A black turtleneck tucked into a brown satin skirt is that quiet, expensive-looking combo that costs almost nothing to pull off. The matte of the turtleneck against the shine of the skirt is the entire trick.
I wore this to a dinner last year and three people asked where I got the skirt. It was from a sale rack. I did not tell them that part.
Chocolate Brown Sweater With Black Pants
So cozy. So easy. A chocolate brown sweater with black pants is my cold-morning uniform, the one I reach for when it’s dark out and I have zero interest in thinking.
Something about a deep brown knit just feels warm and rich, even before you’ve had your first coffee. Add loafers and you look like you tried. You did not.
Black Mini Dress With Brown Boots
A little black mini dress is a canvas, and brown boots are the paint. Knee-high brown boots especially. They warm up the black and stop the outfit from feeling too severe or too much like you’re headed somewhere very serious.
Tights in a sheer black or even a warm brown tone finish it off. This is a look I save for the days I want to feel a little more done up than usual.
Brown Suede Jacket With Black Leggings
Suede is one of those textures that instantly makes an outfit look softer and more interesting. A brown suede jacket over black leggings is casual but never sloppy, which is the exact line I’m always trying to walk.
Toss on a long black tee underneath and some sneakers or ankle boots. Great for errands, great for a long walk, great for pretending you dress this thoughtfully every single day.
Red Sweater With Black Jeans
And here’s where we swing into red, which I firmly believe everyone should own more of. A red sweater with black jeans is one of those red and black outfits that just always looks pulled together with almost no effort on your part.
Red is a color that does a lot of the work for you. It brings life and energy, and against black jeans it POPS in the best way. I keep one cherry-red knit on hand at all times for exactly this reason.
Black Blazer With Red Mini Skirt
Oh, this one is fun. A crisp black blazer over a red mini skirt is a little bold, a little playful, and honestly quite chic. The blazer keeps it grounded so the skirt gets to be the star.
My friend Dana wore this to a birthday dinner and looked so good I’ve been trying to copy her ever since. Black tights, black flats, red skirt, black blazer. Simple math, great result.
Red Cardigan With Black Trousers
For the days when a blazer feels like too much, a red cardigan swoops in to save you. A red cardigan with black trousers is soft and approachable but still gives you that lovely color contrast.
Button it all the way up and it almost reads like a sweater. Leave it open over a black top and it’s a bit more relaxed. I do both, depending on my mood and how cold I am.
Black Leather Jacket With Red Dress
A red dress on its own can feel like a lot. Throw a black leather jacket over it and suddenly it’s cool and a little edgy and much more wearable for an average Tuesday.
Add black boots and you have a look for date night, dinner with friends, or just feeling like the main character on your way to the grocery store.
Red Top With Black Maxi Skirt
A flowing black maxi skirt with a red top is one of my favorite things for a warmer autumn evening. The skirt sways when you walk, the red top brings the color, and the whole thing feels dramatic in a very effortless (oops, I mean easy) way.
Tuck the top in a little at the front. Add some gold jewelry. Feel fabulous.
Black Turtleneck With Red Satin Skirt
Same idea as the brown satin skirt earlier, but with a red satin skirt instead, and WOW does it change the feel. Where brown is quiet and moody, red is confident and a little celebratory.
A black turtleneck keeps it from tipping over into costume territory. This is a look I’d wear to a holiday gathering without a second thought.
Red Coat With All-Black Outfit
Sometimes the easiest way to wear red is to make it the coat. Build an entire all-black outfit underneath, black jeans, black sweater, black boots, and then top it with a bright red coat. Instant statement, zero effort figuring out what goes together.
These are some of my favorite red and black outfit ideas because the coat does everything and your base can stay boringly simple. I have a red wool coat I’ve had for years and it makes every outfit under it look better than it has any right to.
Burgundy Sweater With Black Jeans
Now we drift into burgundy, which is like red’s more grown-up cousin. A burgundy sweater with black jeans is my absolute autumn go-to. Deep, rich, cozy, and it goes with everything in my closet.
Burgundy is one of those colors that flatters nearly every skin tone, which is part of why I love it so much. Pair it with black jeans and some brown boots and you’ve got a look that carries you from October straight through to spring.
Black Blazer With Burgundy Trousers
Swap out the classic black or brown trouser and reach for burgundy instead. A black blazer with burgundy trousers has this quietly elegant vibe, a bit unexpected, a bit refined.
It’s a great one for the office, or for any occasion where you want to look polished without being predictable. I like a silky top underneath in cream or blush to soften it all.
Burgundy Leather Jacket With Black Pants
If you already own a black leather jacket and a brown one, may I gently suggest a burgundy one for your next splurge? A burgundy leather jacket over black pants is rich and moody and just a little bit unexpected.
It reads as neutral from a distance and then people get closer and go, oh, that’s actually this gorgeous deep red color. Which, yes, is the whole point.
Black Top With Burgundy Satin Skirt
You knew a satin skirt was coming back around. A simple black top with a burgundy satin skirt is that soft, elegant, dinner-out combination I never regret wearing.
The burgundy satin catches the light so beautifully. Keep the top plain and let the skirt shine. Black heels or ballet flats depending on how much walking is in your future.
Burgundy Cardigan With Black Mini Skirt
A burgundy cardigan over a black mini skirt is preppy and sweet with a little edge. Button the cardigan up, tuck a bit of it, add black tights and loafers and you look like you stepped out of an autumn catalog.
This is such a cozy fall combination. I wore something very close to this to apple picking last October and did not once feel underdressed or overdressed, which is the sweet spot.
Black Jeans With Burgundy Boots
Let the shoes carry the color for once. Black jeans with burgundy boots is such an easy way to add richness to an otherwise plain outfit. The boots become the whole personality of the look.
Add a cream sweater or a black top up top and let those boots do the talking. In fact, this is my lazy-day trick: same black jeans as always, but the burgundy boots make it feel considered.
Burgundy Dress With Black Blazer
And to close things out, a burgundy dress with a black blazer thrown over the top. This is elegant, warm, and works for so many occasions, from work to dinner to a wedding you forgot was this weekend.
The black blazer sharpens up the softness of the dress. Add black heels and a small bag and you are, as they say, ready for anything. This is the look I’d grab if someone called me at the last minute and said get dressed, we’re going somewhere nice.
