Philippines: Two students were killed in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, with authorities confirming that the suspected shooter was among the dead.

The incident occurred at a school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City. Police said a Grade 9 student brought both a pistol and a rifle onto the campus and opened fire inside a classroom. A Grade 10 male student was killed in the attack, while the alleged shooter later took his own life.

University President Ernald Andal said the situation had been brought under control and that there were no further deaths or reported injuries. He said the institution’s immediate priority was ensuring the safety of students and staff.

Security personnel, including police and soldiers, were deployed around the school as investigators arrived to examine the scene. Students and parents were also seen gathering outside the campus following the incident.

The shooting comes less than two months after another deadly attack at a public high school in Tacloban City. In that incident in June, at least three students were killed and around 20 others were injured after two students reportedly opened fire on the school grounds.

School shootings are relatively uncommon in the Philippines, where firearm ownership is subject to regulations including background checks and psychological assessments. Authorities, however, continue to face challenges posed by the circulation of illegal weapons.

The latest incident also comes less than 10 days after a separate school shooting in Thailand, adding to concerns over violence involving students in the region.

    PTI to file contempt plea over Imran Khan hospital…

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will approach the Supreme Court over what it describes as the government’s failure to implement its order regarding Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the party would file a contempt petition on Saturday. He alleged that the authorities did not comply with the court’s directions and failed to constitute the medical board ordered by the Supreme Court. The development follows the government’s decision to take Imran Khan to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a medical examination instead of Shifa International Hospital. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Imran was taken to PIMS during the night between August 20 and 21 because of security concerns around Shifa Hospital. According to Tarar, doctors from Shifa were present during the examination, while a team comprising specialists examined Imran and declared him medically fit. He said Imran was later taken back to Adiala jail at around 5am. Raja rejected the government’s explanation, saying there was no unusual rush on the roads leading to Shifa. He also claimed that Imran’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, was taken to the hospital in a police-escorted vehicle. The PTI leader said the party’s political and parliamentary committees were meeting to determine its next course of action. He also reiterated that PTI had already announced plans for street protests over the issue. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan separately criticised the government’s handling of the matter. He questioned how political negotiations could continue when, according to him, a clear Supreme Court order had not been implemented. Gohar said the party had been assured that the court’s directions would be followed. He argued that the order clearly required Imran to be shifted to a hospital for treatment and undergo medical tests. He also questioned why the PTI leadership and Imran’s family were not properly informed about the transfer and medical examination. “You do not shake hands like this. Negotiations do not happen like this,” Gohar said while responding to the government’s offer for political dialogue. Speaking in the National Assembly, he warned that PTI could reconsider its participation in Parliament. He said the party would decide within a few days whether it would continue attending the assembly. Opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai also raised questions over the overnight transfer. He said people had expected Imran to be taken to Shifa after the Supreme Court order, but later learned that he had been taken to another hospital. Achakzai expressed concern that elements within the government could be attempting to damage prospects for political dialogue between PTI and the government. The controversy stems from a Supreme Court order issued earlier this week directing that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for treatment for several days. The court also ordered weekly meetings between Imran and his family and allowed access to his personal physician. The court directed that a medical board comprising an ophthalmologist, general physician and cardiologist be formed, with Dr Faisal Sultan and Imran’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, associated with the process. The Supreme Court also ordered that Imran’s medical reports remain confidential and should not be used for political purposes. It instructed PTI supporters and lawyers not to hold political activities or press conferences outside the hospital.

The source said Indian officials have privately encouraged large business groups, including Adani’s, to consider launching a carrier following heightened scrutiny of Air India after a fatal crash in Ahmedabad last year, along with operational breakdowns at market leader IndiGo that disrupted air travel nationwide in December. The source characterized Adani’s interest as motivated partly by a sense of national interest, noting that the government has grown concerned that the country needs another major airline given the troubles at both existing carriers. Shares of Adani Enterprises fell more than 3 percent on Thursday following the report. Internal talks about a possible airline venture remain in early stages, and the group has not set a timeline for a decision. Adani ranks as Asia’s second wealthiest individual, with a net worth of roughly 89 billion dollars, though entering the airline industry would represent one of the riskier moves of his business career. Several Indian carriers, including Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Go First, have collapsed into bankruptcy over the past fifteen years amid high taxes, intense competition and supply chain problems. IndiGo currently holds about 65.4 percent of the domestic market, while Air India controls roughly 25 percent, leaving little room for smaller players. The Indian government has said it wants to expand the country’s airport network to between 350 and 400 facilities by 2047, up from 74 in 2014, as passenger traffic climbs and airlines place record aircraft orders with Boeing and Airbus. Rajan Mehra, the former India head of Qatar Airways, said an Adani led entry into aviation could reshape the sector, though he added that regulators would need to ensure strong safeguards and a level playing field for all carriers going forward. One option under consideration is acquiring a stake in an existing airline rather than building a new one from scratch, according to the second source, who said the group is keeping all possibilities open. The government’s push for new entrants comes after it warned IndiGo in December that it could face regulatory action following a wave of flight cancellations triggered by a pilot shortage. That crisis stranded thousands of passengers and prompted officials to intervene to curb a sharp spike in airfares.
