Jennifer Lopez turns 57 with a message of resilience

Jennifer Lopez rang in her 57th birthday with words that struck a chord far beyond Hollywood. The actress and singer marked the occasion with a glowing Instagram video, filmed inside a car under bright sunshine, radiating the same energy fans have come to expect from her.

What made the post stand out was not just the visuals. Lopez paired the clip with audio from Theodore Roosevelt’s iconic 1910 address, often remembered as “The Man in the Arena.” The speech is a tribute to those who dare to try, fail, and rise again, rather than sit on the sidelines offering criticism. It is a message about grit outlasting judgment, about effort mattering more than perfection.

Lopez kept her own words brief. She simply noted that persistence tends to pay off the longer one sticks with it, a sentiment that mirrored the spirit of the speech itself.

The birthday post followed an early celebration weeks earlier, when Lopez gathered with family and close friends at Siena, a well-known Parisian restaurant. According to a source who spoke to People magazine, she was glowing throughout the evening and seemed fully present in every moment.

The dinner featured Mediterranean dishes, followed by a Chantilly-style cake topped with fresh berries and a torched meringue finish. Sparklers were lit as the group broke into a round of “Happy Birthday.” True to her generous nature, Lopez reportedly shared slices of the cake with other diners seated nearby, turning strangers into part of the celebration.

As the night went on, the mood shifted. Live music took over, and Lopez was seen dancing, letting the evening stretch into something more spontaneous and joyful. The source described the shift as effortless, a natural extension of the celebratory atmosphere already in the room.

Between the intimate Paris dinner and the reflective birthday post days later, Lopez’s 57th appears to be less about the number and more about the outlook. Her choice of the Roosevelt speech serves as a reminder that showing up, even imperfectly, matters more than watching from the sidelines.

For an artist whose career has spanned decades of reinvention, the message feels fitting. Lopez is not just marking another year. She is framing it as one more lap in the arena, dust, sweat and all, still very much in the fight.

On Sunday, July 26, the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch shared an emotional post on Instagram to celebrate her mother’s life and legacy. The touching tribute came just 10 days after Kris announced that MJ had died at the age of 91. The Instagram post featured a collection of cherished family photographs, many of which appeared to have been taken during MJ’s 90th birthday celebration. The first image showed the late family matriarch smiling brightly while wearing a colorful floral jacket. Additional pictures highlighted MJ enjoying special family occasions, with one memorable image showing her flashing a peace sign while smiling for the camera. Accompanying the nostalgic photo carousel, Kris wrote a simple yet emotional message: “Happy Heavenly Birthday Mommy. I love you.” The birthday tribute follows the heartbreaking announcement Kris shared on July 16, when she revealed that her beloved mother had passed away. In her earlier message, the reality television personality reflected on the immense impact MJ had on her life and described the deep sorrow of losing her. “There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye,” Kris wrote while announcing her mother’s death. She also praised her mother for the values she instilled in her family, saying MJ was the heart of their household and taught her the importance of unconditional love, kindness and cherishing every moment with loved ones. Police identify key suspects in Abdullah Tahir mur…

LAHORE: Police have made significant progress in the investigation into the murder of former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ticket-holder Abdullah Tahir, who was shot dead in Lahore on July 29. Investigators say fresh evidence has led to changes in the direction of the probe, while efforts are underway to arrest all those allegedly involved in the killing. According to police officials, the investigation has been reassigned after the suspected shooters were identified during the inquiry. The case was initially being handled by the Investigation Wing of Ghalib Market Police Station. However, investigators decided to revise the probe after obtaining new information about the suspects and their alleged roles in the incident. Police said the alleged main facilitator, Arsalan Jatt, played a key role in the planning and execution of the attack. Investigators claim he transported the suspected shooters from Gujranwala to Lahore in a vehicle before the murder took place. Authorities believe this journey was part of a pre-planned operation carried out before the attack on Abdullah Tahir. Officials further stated that the prime suspect accused of masterminding the murder, identified as Gogi Butt, is currently outside Pakistan. Police said legal proceedings have been initiated to secure his return to the country. Authorities plan to seek the issuance of an international Red Notice to facilitate his arrest and extradition through the relevant international law enforcement agencies. Investigators are also working to trace the remaining suspects believed to have participated in the crime. Police teams are analysing evidence, questioning witnesses and reviewing available records to establish the complete sequence of events and identify everyone involved in the planning and execution of the attack. Police officials said the investigation is continuing on multiple fronts and further arrests are expected as more evidence is collected. Authorities have expressed confidence that all individuals responsible for the murder will be brought before the courts. Abdullah Tahir, a former PTI ticket-holder, was killed in a shooting incident in Lahore on July 29.

Apple offers 15% App Store fee, pushes for Epic settlement talks

Apple is making two significant moves at once in its long-running legal battle with Epic Games. The tech giant has proposed a new commission structure while also pushing for both sides to return to the negotiating table. In a new court filing, Apple proposed capping commissions at 15% on purchases made through alternative payment systems in the US. The move follows a period during which Apple charged a 27% commission on those same transactions. That earlier rate had already landed Apple in trouble. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled it violated a prior court order requiring Apple to let developers direct users toward outside payment options. Epic Games wasted no time responding to the new proposal. The company argued the revised fees still fall far outside what the Ninth Circuit has indicated would be acceptable. The timing of Apple’s filing is notable too. It landed the same day the Supreme Court rejected Apple’s request to pause lower-court proceedings while it separately reviews Gonzalez Rogers’ contempt finding against the company. That rejection means the fee-setting process will continue moving forward in the district court. This holds true regardless of how the higher court eventually rules on the separate contempt issue. Alongside the commission proposal, Apple filed a separate motion asking the court to order both companies into a settlement conference. The session would be overseen by Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero. According to the filing, Apple had already proposed this meeting directly to Epic’s legal team on August 11. Epic, however, declined to agree to the arrangement at that time. Despite Epic’s refusal, Apple maintains the court still has the authority to compel the conference. The company points to the fact that the Ninth Circuit itself had previously invited both parties to work toward an agreement on link-out commissions. Apple believes a confidential meeting could help resolve the dispute without further extending the ongoing remand proceedings. Notably, the filing does not include any actual settlement terms, it simply requests a court order mandating the conference take place. With both sides digging in on separate fronts, the long-running dispute between Apple and Epic shows no signs of reaching a resolution anytime soon.

India Gen Z movement: Youth protests create new ch…

A wave of youth-led protests in India has brought the power of Generation Z into the spotlight, with thousands of young people taking to the streets over concerns related to education, employment, examination systems, and governance. Political observers say the rise of Gen Z movements across South Asia reflects a growing frustration among young people who are demanding accountability, transparency, and better opportunities. Similar youth movements in countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have previously influenced political developments, raising questions about whether India could witness a similar shift. Recent demonstrations in New Delhi have drawn significant attention, with students and young activists gathering at Jantar Mantar and attempting to march toward Parliament. Protesters have been demanding action over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and changes within the education system. The demonstrations intensified after clashes between protesters and police, with authorities using measures including batons and tear gas to disperse crowds. Several protesters were reportedly injured during the action, while opposition parties and rights groups criticized what they described as excessive use of force. The movement has also gained support from prominent social activists, including Sonam Wangchuk, whose participation attracted wider public attention. Student leaders say their campaign is focused on protecting the future of millions of young people affected by problems in the education and examination systems. One of the major concerns raised by protesters is alleged paper leaks and irregularities in competitive examinations, including medical entrance tests. Students argue that such issues have damaged trust in the examination system and created uncertainty for millions of aspiring candidates. The protesters are also demanding accountability from education authorities and calling for stronger action against those responsible for examination-related failures. Some activists have raised broader concerns about unemployment, rising education costs, and the future of public institutions. Experts believe the growing influence of Gen Z activism represents a major change in political engagement. Unlike traditional movements, many of these campaigns use social media platforms to organize supporters and spread messages rapidly. The emergence of youth-led movements presents a challenge for governments across the region. Analysts suggest that young citizens are increasingly unwilling to ignore issues related to governance, fairness, and economic opportunities. As the movement continues to develop, its long-term impact on India’s political landscape remains a key question. The growing participation of young people indicates that Gen Z is becoming an important voice in shaping future debates over policy and governance.

Romania expands brown bear cull as critics highlight enforcement gaps

Romania’s parliament has voted to double the annual hunting quota for brown bears to nearly 900 animals in an effort to manage Europe’s largest population outside Russia, which is estimated at between 10,000 and 13,000. The legislation aims to curb an increasing frequency of human-bear encounters driven by urban sprawl, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. Human deaths caused by bear attacks in Romania have reached nearly 30 over the past two decades, with animals regularly entering mountain towns to scavenge for food. Conservationists and wildlife experts argue the expanded culling quota will fail to solve urban encroachment because trophy hunters target large animals deep within forests. Critics maintain that existing safety measures, including fines for tourists feeding wildlife, subsidised electric fencing, and proper municipal waste management, are not being sufficiently enforced. In addition to state-sanctioned culls, local municipal authorities retain legal powers granted in 2021 to shoot individual bears that intrude directly into private residential properties.

Romania shuts final nuclear reactor as severe Danube drought forces emergency energy measures

Romania has completed a full shutdown of its Cernavoda nuclear power plant after severe drought dropped water levels in the Danube River to historic lows. The plant, which relies on the Danube for cooling and typically provides 20% of the country’s electricity generation, took its second reactor offline following the prior closure of its first reactor in late July. State operator Nuclearelectrica stated that the second reactor was shut down due to the ongoing drop in water levels, with no restart anticipated for at least ten days. To mitigate the energy shortfall, Romania declared a state of emergency for August, activated a 330-megawatt lignite-fired power plant, and requested that major industrial consumers and households curb power use during peak hours. Major automakers including Dacia and Ford have paused domestic production to help conserve power. The total shutdown immediately threatens energy security in neighbouring Moldova, which relies on Romanian imports to cover up to 60% of its electricity deficits. Moldovan authorities warned of potential rolling power cuts if alternative supplies cannot be secured from Ukraine or Western Europe. Across Europe, low river levels have similarly forced nuclear output reductions in France and triggered emergency engineering interventions in Hungary.
