Explosive drone near German airport sparks security alarm

German authorities have launched a major counterterrorism investigation after an explosives-laden drone was discovered near Leipzig/Halle Airport, prompting officials to warn of a dangerous new security threat.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as an unprecedented escalation, saying the presence of a drone carrying explosives at an airport represented a “new threat scenario” for the country.

The drone was found near the airport’s southern runway, which is primarily used for cargo operations. Airport authorities immediately suspended flights while bomb disposal experts secured the area. A specialised bomb disposal robot successfully removed the detonator attached to the drone, preventing a potential explosion.

Investigators are examining the device to determine its origin and identify those responsible. While authorities have not confirmed who was behind the incident, Dobrindt said the operation appeared to have been carefully planned and professionally executed rather than carried out by amateurs. He added that investigators are also examining whether foreign actors may have been involved.

During the security operation, a second unidentified flying object reportedly struck a cargo aircraft after the plane aborted its landing because of the runway closure. The aircraft sustained only minor damage and safely diverted to another airport, where it landed without incident.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of Europe’s busiest cargo hubs and has played a significant role in international freight operations, including hosting aircraft from Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The incident comes amid growing concerns across Europe over suspicious drone activity near airports, military installations and other critical infrastructure. Security officials have repeatedly warned that commercially available drones could be used for sabotage, espionage or attacks on strategic facilities.

Authorities are continuing forensic examinations of the recovered drone while counterterrorism investigators work to establish its origin, motive and any possible links to organised groups or foreign intelligence operations.

The BSF personnel has been accused of murdering his wife and allegedly attempting to conceal the circumstances surrounding her death by claiming that she had accidentally fallen from the roof of their house. According to reports, the couple had been married for around 12 years and had two children. Family members reportedly said that tensions between the husband and wife had been frequent because of the man’s alleged behaviour. The victim’s family has accused him of repeatedly subjecting her to physical abuse during their marriage. In an application submitted to the police, the victim’s family alleged that the accused reached home on August 13 and severely assaulted his wife shortly after arriving. The family claimed that the incident resulted in serious injuries to the woman. According to the complaint, the victim’s parents were informed the following morning that their daughter was in critical condition and had been taken to a hospital. They immediately went to the hospital, where they were reportedly informed that she had succumbed to her injuries. The victim’s family said they observed multiple severe marks of physical assault on her body. Based on the condition of the body and the family’s previous concerns about the couple’s relationship, they raised suspicions about the explanation that she had fallen from the roof. The victim’s father accused his son-in-law of having an extremely aggressive and violent temperament. He alleged that the accused had physically abused his daughter repeatedly since their marriage and had subjected her to violence on several occasions. The father further alleged that the accused beat his wife to death and then attempted to avoid arrest and legal consequences by portraying the incident as an accidental fall from the roof. Following the complaint, police registered a case against the accused husband as well as his uncle and aunt. The BSF personnel has been arrested in connection with the case, while the other two named suspects are reportedly absconding. Police teams are conducting searches to locate and arrest them. The authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and are expected to examine evidence collected from the scene, statements from family members and other relevant material. The allegations made by the victim’s family will also be subject to investigation and legal proceedings. The case has drawn attention to concerns surrounding domestic violence and the difficulties victims and their families can face when allegations of repeated abuse are involved. The victim’s family has maintained that the woman’s death was not an accident and has demanded legal action against those responsible. The investigation will determine whether the injuries were caused by an assault and whether the accused deliberately attempted to misrepresent the circumstances of his wife’s death. Police have not yet announced the final findings of the investigation. Under the accord, an external armed attack against any one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all, consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. The Foreign Minister stressed that the agreement is purely defensive in nature and is not directed against any country. He said the accord is intended to strengthen cooperation in confronting shared peace and security challenges while promoting regional stability and prosperity. Dar also clarified that the Makkah Accord does not replace or abrogate any existing bilateral or multilateral agreements between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, or their agreements with other countries and international organisations. Another significant provision, he said, is that the agreement remains open to other countries in the region willing to uphold its fundamental principles and resolve differences through mutual respect, cooperation and peaceful means. Dar reaffirmed that the agreement is consistent with Pakistan’s foreign policy and said Islamabad would continue working with all brotherly countries towards lasting peace and stability. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and to building a more secure, stable and prosperous future for the peoples of the region.

The prime minister highlighted the role of the Pakistan Digital Authority in leading the country’s digital transformation. He said the authority was providing an effective direction for the delivery of government services and citizen-centric facilities. According to him, the implementation of the National Digital Vision would play a key role in building a modern, integrated, and technologically advanced society capable of meeting future challenges. Appreciating the progress made so far in promoting digital governance, the digital economy, and digital public services, Shehbaz Sharif instructed officials to strengthen international partnerships under the National Integrated Digital Policy. He stressed the importance of increasing collaboration with global technology partners and ensuring Pakistan’s effective representation at international digital forums to benefit from global expertise and innovation. The prime minister further directed that the National Digital Vision should be implemented across multiple sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, public utilities, housing, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He noted that the adoption of digital technologies in these sectors would improve service delivery, enhance efficiency, and provide citizens with faster, more reliable, and transparent access to government services. He also instructed authorities to accelerate efforts to provide better digital facilities to the public without delay. According to the prime minister, the introduction of a Digital ID system would allow citizens to access multiple government services through a single, integrated platform. This initiative is expected to simplify administrative procedures, reduce paperwork, improve transparency, and make public services more accessible for people across the country. The meeting also decided that a session of the National Digital Commission would be convened in the near future. The commission will engage provincial governments and other key stakeholders to ensure coordinated implementation of the National Digital Policy across Pakistan. Officials said the collaborative approach would help align federal and provincial initiatives while accelerating the country’s digital transformation agenda. Several senior cabinet members and government officials attended the meeting, including Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Information Minister Atta Tarar, National Health Minister Mustafa Kamal, Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, and State Bank of Pakistan Governor Jameel Ahmad, along with other senior officials.     Man arrested over alleged assault of Bangkok woman

    A woman who was allegedly brought to Pakistan from Bangkok on the promise of marriage has accused a man of sexually assaulting her in Rawalpindi. Police said a case was registered at the Rawat police station on the woman’s complaint. The allegations have been included in the first information report (FIR) registered against the nominated suspect. According to the FIR, the woman met the suspect in Bangkok about two years ago. The two reportedly developed a friendship after their meeting. She later alleged that the suspect continued to remain in contact with her and promised to marry her. The woman stated that around four months ago, she came to Pakistan after being assured of marriage. She said the suspect arranged a rented apartment for her in a private housing society in Rawalpindi. She then began living at the apartment. According to her statement, the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted her on several occasions. She claimed that whenever she asked him to marry her, he avoided giving a clear response and continued to delay the matter. The woman also alleged that the suspect restricted her movement. She claimed that she was not allowed to leave the apartment freely. She further accused him of physically assaulting her during her stay there. The complainant also alleged that the suspect took her money when he left the apartment. She approached the police after the alleged incidents and requested legal action against the man. Police confirmed that the nominated suspect has been arrested. After the FIR was registered, the investigation was handed over to the relevant specialised investigation unit. Officials said the case is under investigation. Police are collecting evidence and examining the allegations made by the complainant. Further legal action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation.
