A 73-year-old Indian film director has been arrested in Mumbai following allegations of sexual assault made by a 33 year-old actress, according to reports.

The actress reportedly approached the police and accused the veteran filmmaker of sexually assaulting her after allegedly inviting her to his residence under the pretext of discussing a film project.

According to details mentioned in the police complaint, the actress claimed that the director contacted her in connection with a professional discussion and asked her to visit his home. She alleged that after she arrived, the situation took an unexpected turn and the filmmaker sexually assaulted her.

The actress further alleged that the accused gave her a substance that made her feel drowsy or impaired before the alleged assault. She also claimed that the director threatened her during the incident, according to the complaint filed with the police.

Following the complaint, Mumbai police initiated an investigation and arrested the 73-year-old filmmaker. Authorities are now examining the allegations and gathering evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

The accused director was subsequently produced before a court. After hearing the case, the court granted police custody of the filmmaker until August 12. The development means investigators will have additional time to question the accused and examine the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

    Delhi court orders removal of objectionable content about Tabu

Justice Jyoti Singh, while hearing the petition represented by senior advocate Swati Sukumar, directed multiple social media platforms, e-commerce listings and websites to remove the allegedly objectionable content. Various scenes from Tabu’s films were also discussed during the hearing. Tabu’s lawyer told the court that certain video clips were being promoted using search terms that portrayed the actress in an inappropriate manner. Some scenes, the lawyer said, had been slowed down or given altered titles to create a sexualised impression. Sukumar argued that the repeated appearance of such material through new accounts and posts made the issue more serious than an ordinary copyright or content infringement dispute. During the hearing, counsel representing an online platform referred to another personality rights case being heard by the court on the same day. The lawyer suggested that personality rights proceedings could sometimes be used to seek removal of allegedly defamatory material. The court observed that the legal questions raised in Tabu’s case could have wider implications beyond the present matter. Justice Jyoti Singh said that highly harmful material may require a mechanism capable of preventing such content from appearing online in the first place. The court also examined the safeguards currently used by online platforms, including automated content detection systems, in-app complaint mechanisms and grievance redressal procedures under the Information Technology Rules. Justice Singh observed that the key challenge was not simply the formulation or implementation of policy, but the creation of an effective system capable of preventing objectionable material from being uploaded at the initial stage. The court said an amicus curiae would be appointed to assist it in examining the broader legal questions involved in the case. The proceedings will also identify related legal issues that may require detailed consideration at a later stage. The court further indicated that it would consider developing a standard operating procedure (SOP) for dealing with similar cases involving harmful or objectionable online content.

The performing arts landscape of today is not the one of twenty years ago, and the training institutions responsible for the next generation of artists and practitioners must reflect that reality. At the same time, Jabbar made clear that responsibility did not rest with institutions alone. Students, he said, must bring the same commitment to the opportunities NAPA provides. They should not take those opportunities for granted and must maintain the discipline the performing arts require. NAPA was established in 2005 at the request of then-President Pervez Musharraf and was founded by the legendary Zia Mohyeddin, who was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and had dedicated his life to theatre, film and television across both local and international productions. The academy offers programmes in theatre arts and music, with students taught by practicing musicians, musicologists and visiting maestros. Students also receive practical training in performance and are given the opportunity to present their work to live audiences. Javed Jabbar himself is one of Pakistan’s most distinguished public intellectuals, with a career spanning advertising, documentary filmmaking, politics and writing. He has authored 19 books, directed over 300 commercials, and produced landmark documentary and cinematic works including the 1972 documentary Moenjodaro: The City That Must Not Die, which won the Silver Prize at the Asian Film Festival. He has also served as Minister of State for Information and as a member of the Senate Forum for Policy Research. His advocacy for NAPA reflects a longstanding commitment to the role of culture and the arts in Pakistan’s national life.
