Wat Huay Mongkol robe-draping ceremony this weekend
The Wat Huay Mongkol robe-draping ceremony will take place in Hua Hin this weekend, with Buddhist prayers, blessings and a procession involving a 399-metre-long saffron robe.
The 13th annual event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, 8–9 August, with activities beginning at 5pm each day.
Wannapha Kiatphongsa, executive director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Central Region, said TAT was organising the event with Wat Huay Mongkol. Buddhists, residents and tourists are invited to attend.
The Wat Huay Mongkol robe-draping ceremony is considered one of the Central Region’s main faith-based tourism events and gives devotees an opportunity to pay respects to the giant statue of Luang Pu Thuat.
Ceremony programme
Activities on Saturday will include Buddhist prayers intended to ward off misfortune and bring longevity. Monks will also sprinkle holy water over those attending as a blessing.
The main robe-draping ceremony will be held on Sunday. Devotees will join a procession carrying a saffron robe measuring three metres wide and 399 metres long.
Participants will walk clockwise around the Luang Pu Thuat statue three times before the robe is draped over it. Lighting and sound will be used during the ceremony.
Phra Phisan Sitthikhun, also known as Chao Khun Phairot Paphassaro, abbot of Wat Huay Mongkol, will preside over the religious proceedings.
The event is intended to preserve the religious tradition while promoting faith-based tourism and merit-making in Hua Hin.
