Karachi watchman shot dead during suspected robber…

Two people were killed in separate shooting incidents reported within an hour in different areas of Karachi on Thursday, prompting police to launch investigations into both cases.

The first incident occurred in the Boat Basin police jurisdiction near Bath Island in Clifton, where a watchman was fatally shot outside a residential bungalow. Rescue officials shifted the victim’s body to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities.

According to Chhipa rescue officials, the deceased was identified as 40-year-old Mewa, who sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Initial information suggested that armed suspects opened fire after encountering resistance during an attempted robbery.

However, Boat Basin Station House Officer (SHO) Riaz Niazi said the exact motive behind the killing had not yet been established. He confirmed that the victim originally belonged to the Thar region and was employed as a watchman at the bungalow where the incident occurred.

The SHO said police were investigating all possible angles, including personal enmity and robbery, before reaching a final conclusion. Authorities are also attempting to obtain CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the suspects and reconstruct the sequence of events.

In a separate incident, another man was shot dead near Link Road on the National Highway in the Bin Qasim area. The victim was also taken to Jinnah Hospital for medico-legal procedures.

Bin Qasim SHO Faisal Rafiq identified the deceased as 40-year-old Bashir, a truck driver originally from Dera Ismail Khan. According to preliminary findings, Bashir was present at a truck terminal when unidentified assailants, who were allegedly lying in wait, opened fire on him.

Police said the victim suffered three bullet wounds, including one to the chest. Investigators recovered three spent 30-bore pistol casings from the crime scene, which have been collected as forensic evidence.

Officials believe the second shooting may have been motivated by personal enmity, although they emphasised that the investigation remains ongoing and no suspects have been arrested so far.

The two fatal incidents highlight the continuing security challenges in Karachi, where police regularly investigate cases involving violent crime, targeted attacks, and robbery-related shootings. Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with investigators and provide any information that may assist in identifying those responsible.

In addition to restrictions on international participation, the PCB has also declared that individuals involved in the unauthorized league will be ineligible for coaching, mentoring, commentary, talent development, or any other official responsibilities associated with the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for two years. The decision reflects the board’s intention to ensure that those associated with unauthorized competitions do not continue to benefit from official roles within Pakistan’s cricket structure. The board’s statement serves as a strong reminder that compliance with PCB regulations is mandatory for all Pakistani cricketers, regardless of whether they are active professionals or retired players. Kamal said the federal government distributes Rs8,884 billion annually among the provinces, but questioned the lack of an effective mechanism to ensure that funds reach union councils and communities at the grassroots level. He noted that Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are larger in area than many countries, while Sindh and Balochistan also cover territories exceeding those of numerous states around the world. According to him, Pakistan’s population has grown dramatically since the country had only around 37 million people, yet the number of provinces has remained unchanged. The minister cited countries such as Sri Lanka, Iran and India as examples of states with more administrative units, arguing that the creation of additional provinces would not weaken Pakistan but could instead strengthen the federation. Kamal also linked administrative shortcomings to growing security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where security personnel continue to lose their lives. He said Pakistan needed fundamental reforms to address the causes behind instability and improve governance. Turning to the issue of public infrastructure, the minister questioned the political focus on provincial identity when basic safety measures such as covering open sewer lines remain neglected. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif works long hours and has extensive experience in provincial administration, but added that the federal government alone could not solve every local governance problem. The debate has intensified as China expands its military capabilities in the region. Questions have also emerged over the long-term reliability of the US security commitment to Japan. Takaichi has maintained that Japan should pursue a realistic and practical approach toward achieving a world without nuclear weapons. Japan’s three principles have traditionally called for the country not to possess, produce or permit the introduction of nuclear weapons into its territory. Some people exposed to radiation during the Nagasaki bombing remain outside the government’s official recognition criteria. Their exclusion is linked to their location at the time of the attack and the areas officially designated as part of the blast zone. Shigemitsu Tanaka, head of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council, raised the issue directly with Takaichi. Tanaka urged the government to provide support to both officially recognised survivors and those who remain unrecognised. He said the survivors are aging and that time is running out for them. Takaichi responded that the government already provides medical expense subsidies to unrecognised survivors on a level comparable to assistance given to officially recognised hibakusha. She said the government would continue implementing such support. The Nagasaki anniversary therefore carried both historical and political significance this year. Survivors and peace advocates continue to call for stronger commitments to nuclear disarmament. At the same time, Japan’s government is balancing its pacifist traditions with growing concerns over regional military threats.
