Tomato for fresh and glowing skin

Tomatoes are a common ingredient in the kitchen but they are also used in many home skincare routines.  They contain vitamin C and antioxidants which may help make the skin look brighter and fresher.  Some people also use tomato based remedies to help reduce the appearance of spots and breakouts.

Tomato and yogurt face mask

A simple tomato mask can be used to refresh dull looking skin.  Mash one tomato and mix it with a small amount of yogurt. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes.

Then rinse with clean water. This mask may help the skin feel fresh especially after spending time in the sun.

Tomato and lemon for tanned skin

Tomato and lemon are sometimes used as a home remedy for sun tanned skin.  Cut a few pieces of tomato and add some lemon juice. Apply the mixture gently to the affected areas. After a short time lightly massage the skin with a little water and rinse it off.

However lemon can irritate the skin so people with sensitive skin should avoid this remedy.

Tomato and Multani Mitti for blackheads

Tomato juice can be mixed with Multani Mitti to make a simple face paste.  Apply it to the face and leave it for around 15 minutes.

Add a little water gently massage the skin and then wash your face with lukewarm water.

Tomato and sugar scrub

Tomato and sugar can be used as a gentle homemade scrub.  Cut a tomato in half and add about one teaspoon of sugar.

Once the sugar becomes slightly wet gently move the tomato over the skin without rubbing too hard.  This may help remove dead skin cells and leave the face feeling cleaner.

Tomato and lemon for fine lines

Some people also use a mixture of tomato and lemon juice as a home remedy for fine lines.

Mix two teaspoons of tomato juice with two teaspoons of lemon juice. Apply a small amount with cotton and leave it on for about 15 minutes before washing your face.

Be careful with home remedies

Not every natural ingredient is suitable for every skin type.  Before applying any homemade skincare remedy to your face, test a small amount on a limited area of skin first.

If you experience burning itching redness or irritation wash it off immediately.  People with sensitive skin should be especially careful with acidic ingredients such as lemon juice.

Android 17 feature may help reduce motion sickness

Some people may suddenly experience nausea and dizziness while travelling by plane, train, ship or car. This condition is medically known as motion sickness and people affected by it may experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms. If you are also one of those people who experience dizziness or nausea while travelling in a moving vehicle, you are not alone. Many people around the world experience this problem. Generally, experts advise people suffering from motion sickness to avoid using their phones. However, Google has now introduced a new feature called Motion Assist for Android smartphone users. According to a report by Android Authority, Google has started gradually rolling out this feature. It is part of the Android 17 operating system and is being introduced first for Google Pixel phones. The feature is designed to help reduce the severity of motion sickness while travelling in a vehicle. What causes motion sickness? Motion sickness is a somewhat mysterious condition and its exact cause is not fully understood. However, experts have identified several possible reasons. One thing is clear: motion sickness can occur when our senses send conflicting signals to the brain. For example, if you are sitting on a swing that is moving up and down, your eyes may see one thing, your muscles may sense something else while your inner ear experiences something completely different. The brain may struggle to process these conflicting signals resulting in dizziness or nausea. Experts believe that the inner ear plays an important role in motion sickness because it helps control our sense of balance. The inner ear is part of a network known as the vestibular system which sends information about the body’s movement and surroundings to the brain. The brain combines information from different parts of the body to make sense of what is happening but sometimes these signals can become confusing. For example, while traveling on an airplane, you may feel movement but your eyes may tell your brain that you are sitting still. A similar situation can occur while travelling on a river or at sea. You may be sitting or standing on a stable surface while still experiencing a sensation of movement. Some passengers particularly those sitting away from the driver’s seat in a car can experience the same thing. All of these situations can result in motion sickness. What is Google’s new feature and how does it work? Google has been working on this feature for quite some time. The code for the feature was first spotted in December 2024 and development has continued since then. It has now become part of Android 17. Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to find it by going to Settings then Your Profiles and All Services. From there, users can access the Personal and Device Safety section and enable the feature. Once enabled, Motion Assist will automatically activate when the phone detects that it is inside a moving vehicle. Google will also provide a Motion Assist option in Quick Settings allowing users to manually turn the feature on or off. When the feature is active, users will have several customization options. They will be able to change the colour, appearance and other aspects of the motion indicators. During a journey, motion dots will appear on the screen to help reduce the feeling of nausea. It should be noted that the feature does not guarantee complete relief from motion sickness but it may still prove helpful. Are there other simple ways to prevent motion sickness? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several simple measures may help reduce or prevent motion sickness. These include: Prefer sitting in the front seat of a car or bus. Choose a window seat on an airplane or train. If possible, lie down and close your eyes. Drink plenty of water and avoid tea or coffee. Avoid eating large meals before travelling. Avoid smoking. Distract yourself with activities such as listening to music but avoid reading. Take deep breaths to stay calm or close your eyes and count backward from 100. Look at a stationary object such as looking at the sky while traveling in a vehicle. If available, chewing a small amount of ginger may also help. The smell of mint or using mint candies may also provide some relief.

  • Why Cockroaches are hard to remove

Finding cockroaches in the kitchen can be unpleasant. Because they multiply quickly a small problem can soon spread to other parts of the house.  Cockroaches can survive in difficult conditions which makes them hard to remove once they settle in. Cockroaches can survive for a long time without food or water and can live in dark damp places such as kitchens cupboards and under sinks.  Their body parts and droppings can also become part of household dust. This may trigger allergies and can make asthma symptoms worse especially in children and people who already have asthma. There are many sprays and pest control products available in stores. However some people also try simple home methods for a small infestation. Boric acid and sugar A mixture of sugar and boric acid is sometimes used to control cockroaches. Sugar attracts them while boric acid can help kill them.  If used it should be placed only in areas that children and pets cannot reach. Cinnamon Cinnamon is another common home remedy. Its strong smell may help keep cockroaches away from certain areas. However it should not be considered a complete solution for a serious infestation. Mint or lavender oil The smell of peppermint or lavender oil may also help discourage cockroaches. A properly diluted mixture can be sprayed around cupboards and other areas where cockroaches are often seen. For a bigger or repeated infestation home remedies alone may not be enough. Keeping the kitchen clean storing food properly fixing leaks reducing moisture and sealing cracks can help.  If the problem continues professional pest control may be the most effective option.

  • Why Popcorn became the ultimate movie snack

Watching TV or a movie often feels incomplete without something to eat. For many people popcorn is the first snack that comes to mind. But have you ever wondered how popcorn became the most popular food at movie theaters? The tradition began in the 19th century when popcorn became a popular snack at fairs festivals and circuses. In those days it was usually sold from small street carts. A major turning point came in 1885 when the first popcorn machine was invented. This made it easier to prepare fresh popcorn quickly and sell it to large crowds. By 1907, the United States had nearly 5,000 movie theaters with tickets costing just 5 cents. Popcorn sellers started placing their carts outside theaters where moviegoers could easily buy popcorn before going inside. As movie theaters became more modern and luxurious many owners banned outside food. However the rule did not last long. By the 1930s theaters began selling popcorn inside and outside their buildings realizing it was a profitable business. Today popcorn is one of the biggest sources of income for many cinemas with some estimates suggesting it accounts for up to 85% of concession stand sales. Another reason popcorn became the perfect movie snack is that it is light easy to eat and does not make much noise allowing people to enjoy their film without disturbing others.

Greek epic poetry finds a home in Irish literature

There is an intimacy in the way Irish writers engage with classical mythology including epic poetry. The Odyssey predates Ireland’s earliest written epic, Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), by nearly 1,400 years. The distance in time and geography vanishes the moment an Irish poet puts pen to paper. Universal Image of The Weary Traveler In her modern translation of The Odyssey, classicist Emily Wilson frames Homer’s epic through a deeply human lens. She writes of an exhausted wanderer standing outside a home. A figure who has been displaced and lost for decades. That universal image of the weary traveler searching for home is precisely why Homer’s writing has found such a permanent resonance in Ireland’s literary canon. Across generations, Ireland’s greatest literary minds have treated Homer as a living contemporary. William Butler Yeats, Patrick Kavanagh, and Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney all drew heavily on Homeric motifs to articulate the Irish experience. For these writers, the themes of exiled wanderers, domestic longing, political strife, and tragic return were not abstract concepts from a bygone Mediterranean era. They mirrored the realities of Irish history, rural life, and national identity. Seamus Heaney Seamus Heaney’s engagement with classical literature was particularly profound. Heaney frequently used ancient myths to process modern conflict, finding in Greek drama and epic poetry a framework to speak about political violence, loss, and reconciliation during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. By mapping Homeric echoes onto the Irish landscape, Heaney showed that the struggles of Ithaca were not so different from those of Derry or Ulster. To Heaney and his peers, classical antiquity offered a universal mirror through which local grief and local beauty could be understood. Patrick Kavanagh Similarly, Patrick Kavanagh famously elevated the quiet, local struggles of rural Monaghan by comparing them to the epic siege of Troy, insisting that the everyday life of ordinary people contains just as much drama and dignity as the ancient sagas. Meanwhile, W.B. Yeats wove Homeric imagery directly into the fabric of the Irish Literary Revival, bridging Ireland’s Gaelic heritage with classical antiquity to forge a distinct national identity. Ireland’s Relationship with The Odyssey What makes Ireland’s relationship with The Odyssey so enduring is this sense of shared cultural DNA. Both traditions belong to storytelling cultures rooted in oral performance, mythic memory, and a deep reverence for language. Homer’s tales of displaced heroes, lingering grief, and ultimate return resonate naturally within an island nation shaped by exile, migration, and the constant search for home. Ultimately, the literary bridge connecting Homer to Heaney proves that timeless stories do not belong to a single era or place. As long as readers recognize the tired wanderer standing at the door, The Odyssey will continue to find a home in Irish literature. The Literary Parallel Homer’s The Odyssey predates Ireland’s national epic, Táin Bó Cúailnge, by roughly 14 centuries, yet their thematic overlap remains seamless. Prominent Irish authors including Seamus Heaney, W.B. Yeats, and Patrick Kavanagh frequently adapted Homeric themes into their modern works. Emily Wilson’s modern translation highlights themes of exile and displacement, which reflect Ireland’s history of migration, political conflict, and domestic longing.

  • Azad Kashmir Elections: A Pilot Project or a Model for Pakistan’s Next General Elections?

By Engr. Saqlain Abid Political Commentator and NFPA-Certified Electrical Engineer   Elections are the vital organ of a living democracy. If they are conducted according to the people’s choice, without interference, on equal grounds, and with the consensus of all democratic participants, then the state not only remains in good health but also flourishes with the hope and commitment promised before the elections.   For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections are not being held on a single polling day. Instead, the electoral process has been divided into three different phases—27 July, 8 August, and 20 August 2026. This unusual arrangement raises several important questions. Why is the state preparing this electoral model? What are the conditions on the ground that necessitated such a strategy? More importantly, how could this experiment influence Pakistan’s national elections next year?   The political environment surrounding these elections has already become highly contested. The major political force JAAC has been banned by the government, and several of its leaders have been detained. The party has consequently boycotted the elections. PTI, another major opposition force, has also chosen to boycott the electoral process. According to its leadership, the party has been forced to contest only through independent candidates rather than under its official party platform. PTI argues that the government has failed to provide the safety, guarantees, and political environment necessary for free and fair elections. Under such circumstances, the party believes participation would merely legitimize a process it does not trust.   On the other hand, the ruling coalition, led by PML-N and PPP, has entered the campaign with promises of development projects, including new motorways and business initiatives aimed at attracting voters. While development remains an important component of any election campaign, questions regarding electoral credibility continue to overshadow these promises.   In principle, elections should be transparent, efficient, and completed within the shortest possible time. If technological solutions such as secure online systems become feasible in the future, they may further reduce the chances of manipulation. However, extending the polling process over three different days also creates a debate. While supporters argue that it makes election management easier, critics believe that a prolonged process increases opportunities for allegations of interference and weakens public confidence.   The government should have taken all political parties on board before announcing such an unprecedented electoral model. A genuinely inclusive process requires the participation of every major democratic stakeholder. JAAC, which commands significant public support in parts of Azad Kashmir, should have been engaged through political dialogue rather than exclusion. The credibility of elections depends not only on voting day but also on the perception that every political voice has been given an equal opportunity to participate.   Pakistan has previously criticized India for conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir while sections of the local political leadership remained outside the process. At the time, Islamabad argued that elections held without broad political participation reflected only a procedural exercise rather than the genuine will of the people. The obvious question now is what circumstances have led Pakistan toward a model that some critics argue resembles the same approach.   Some political analysts believe that the AJK elections may serve as a pilot project to test a phased electoral model before its possible application across Pakistan during future general elections. Whether this perception is accurate or not, the debate itself demonstrates the level of public skepticism surrounding the process.   Another factor attracting attention is the role of the Chief Election Commissioner, whose tenure continues to face criticism following the February 2024 general elections. Allegations raised by former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha regarding manipulation of election results remain part of Pakistan’s political discourse, despite subsequent developments in the case. These controversies have inevitably shaped public perceptions regarding electoral transparency.   If voter turnout remains significantly low because of political boycotts and public distrust, the legitimacy of the exercise may come under further scrutiny. It is therefore the moral responsibility of the government and the Election Commission to create an environment where every democratic force feels secure enough to participate and where no stakeholder can reasonably question the fairness of the process.   The electoral process ultimately determines the political shelf life of a state. When governments emerge through elections widely accepted by the public, trust between the people and the state grows stronger. When that trust weakens, political polarization deepens, frustration increases, and hostile external actors find greater opportunities to exploit internal divisions. With Balochistan already facing serious security challenges and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confronting persistent instability, any controversy surrounding the AJK electoral process may further strengthen perceptions that democratic space is shrinking rather than expanding.   Ultimately, the success of these elections will not be measured solely by administrative efficiency but by whether the people of Azad Kashmir believe that their voices were freely heard and genuinely counted. A credible electoral process strengthens democracy; a disputed one risks weakening the very foundations upon which democratic legitimacy depends.
