  • Night shifts harm mental health

A new study suggests that working night shifts may have a negative effect on mental health.  People who work at night may experience more stress anxiety and depression than those who work during the day. Researchers reviewed seven previous studies involving 28,438 people.  They looked at the participants working hours and mental health and found that night-shift workers were more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. According to the findings around 33% of people working night shifts showed signs of depression or anxiety compared with those working daytime shifts. Luciana Torquati from the University of Exeter who led the study explained that night work can disturb the body’s natural clock. Our bodies are designed to sleep at night and stay active during the day so working against this natural pattern can affect sleep and mood. Poor sleep and an irregular routine may also cause irritability and mood changes. Night shift workers may feel lonely or disconnected from others because their work schedule can make it harder to spend time with family and friends. The study also reported that night shift work may have a stronger negative effect on women’s mental health than on men’s. Overall the research suggests that working at night may affect not only sleep but also a person’s mood relationships and overall mental well being.

  • Why does your nose block at Night?

Do you breathe normally during the day but find it harder to breathe through your nose when you lie down at night? This is a common problem. A blocked nose can disturb sleep, force you to breathe through your mouth and leave you with a dry mouth or sore throat in the morning. Many people think a blocked nose is always caused by a cold or flu. However doctors say there can be several other reasons. Why does it happen at night? Dr. Subrata Das of Aster Whitefield Hospital says that natural changes in the body during sleep can make nasal blockage feel worse. One common reason is sleeping position. During the day when you sit or stand gravity helps mucus drain from the nose.  But when you lie down mucus can collect inside the nose, making breathing more difficult. Changes in hormones at night may also increase swelling inside the nose. People who already have allergies or nasal inflammation may notice the problem more strongly at bedtime. The nervous system can also affect the blood vessels and tissues inside the nose. Changes in nerve activity during the night may increase mucus and make the nose feel stuffy. Allergies may be the cause If your nose becomes blocked mainly after you get into bed allergies could be responsible. Dust dust mites in mattresses and pillows, carpets curtains and damp areas can trigger allergies.  Mold caused by moisture on walls can also lead to a blocked nose, sneezing and itching. Keeping the bedroom clean and dry may help reduce these problems. Acid reflux can also affect your nose Acid reflux is another possible cause. Eating a heavy meal and lying down soon afterward can allow stomach acid to move upward toward the throat. This may cause throat irritation and sometimes make nasal symptoms feel worse. If you also experience heartburn a sour taste in your mouth frequent throat clearing or a burning throat in the morning it is better to speak with a doctor. How can you get relief? The most important step is to find out what is causing the blockage. If allergies are responsible a doctor may recommend a nasal spray or other treatment. You can also try. •Keeping your bedroom free of dust •Washing bed sheets and pillow covers regularly •Cleaning mattresses and carpets •Removing mold and moisture •Avoiding meals just before bedtime •Using a safe saline nasal rinse if recommended •Warm salt water gargles may help if you have a sore or irritated throat. When should you see a doctor? Occasional nasal blockage is usually not a major concern. But if your nose is blocked every night your sleep is regularly disturbed or you have symptoms such as frequent sneezing facial pain headaches fever breathing problems or ongoing nasal discharge you should see a doctor.

  • 5 Footwear types that may cause pain

When choosing shoes or slippers most people focus on style comfort and appearance. But footwear can also affect your health. Wearing the wrong type of footwear for long periods may put extra pressure on your feet, knees hips and lower back. Experts say there is no single type of footwear that is perfect for everyone. Your foot shape flat feet, walking style and how long you wear the shoes can all make a difference. Here are five common types of footwear that may cause problems for some people. Flip-Flops Flip-flops are common around the house and are often used in bathrooms because they are light and easy to wear. However most flip-flops provide very little support. They usually do not give the arch of the foot enough support especially for people with flat feet. Wearing them for long periods may affect the way you walk and put extra stress on your legs and knees. They are better suited for short-term use rather than long walks or standing for hours. Pointed shoes and flats Pointed shoes and flat shoes can look stylish especially with formal or office outfits. But some have a narrow front that leaves little room for your toes. Regularly wearing tight pointed shoes can squeeze the toes and cause discomfort. Over time they may also affect the natural position of the toes. Choose shoes that give your toes enough room to move comfortably. Crocs Crocs are popular because they are soft lightweight, and comfortable. Many people wear them at home while shopping or during daily activities. However very soft footwear may not provide enough stability for everyone. If your feet do not get proper support while walking, your walking pattern may change and place extra stress on your legs and knees. When choosing Crocs or similar footwear look beyond softness. Check the fit, sole and overall support.  Kolhapuri Sandals Kolhapuri sandals are traditional and look great with many outfits. However their flat soles often provide limited arch  support. People with flat feet may find this type of footwear less comfortable especially when worn for long periods. Poor support can affect foot alignment and may increase pressure on the knees and other parts of the lower body. This does not mean Kolhapuri sandals are harmful for everyone. The key is to consider your foot shape and comfort before wearing them for long periods. High heels and some boots High heels are popular for their stylish look but wearing them for several hours every day can cause problems for some people. High heels shift more body weight toward the front of the foot. Your body also changes its position to maintain balance which can put extra stress on the lower back and hips. Pointed high heels can also put more pressure on the toes and the front of the foot.  They may be better saved for special occasions rather than daily wear. How to choose better footwear Good footwear should be more than just attractive. When buying shoes or slippers Make sure •Your feet feel comfortable inside them •Your toes have enough room to move •The sole provides enough support •The footwear fits properly You can walk naturally without pain If you regularly experience foot knee hip, or back pain after wearing certain footwear consider changing it. If the pain continues or becomes worse speak with a qualified healthcare professional. The bottom line Fashion is important but comfort and foot health should come first. Choose footwear that matches your foot shape provides proper support and does not put unnecessary pressure on your feet or joints.

  • How many people can you spot?

This interesting visual puzzl is a great way to test your observation skills. Look closely at the picture above and try to figure out how many real people are in the scene. The image shows an art gallery with several paintings hanging on the walls. A number of visitors are looking at the artwork and there is also a statue of a woman inside the gallery. Can you find the correct number? At first glance you may think there are 14 people in the picture.  However that answer is incorrect because the people shown in paintings and the statue are not real people so they should not be counted. If you counted six people that answer is also wrong. There is actually one more person hiding in the picture. Where is the hidden person? The correct answer is seven. To find the hidden person look carefully at the painting in the right corner. Pay close attention to the eyes in the painting. You may notice that a person is cleverly hiding behind it.

  • Why humidity makes your hair frizzy

During hot and humid weather even perfectly styled hair can become messy puffy and frizzy within minutes. While sweat and heat can play a role the main reason is actually what happens to the hair when it comes into contact with moisture in the air. Hair is mostly made of a protein called keratin. Its shape is partly maintained by weak hydrogen bonds. When the air becomes humid hair absorbs moisture which changes these bonds and can make your hairstyle lose its shape. Which hair types are most affected? Some types of hair are more sensitive to humidity than others. Curly porous and chemically treated hair can absorb more moisture making them more likely to become frizzy puffy or tangled. Frizzy hair does not always mean that your hair is dry. It can also be a sign that your hair is absorbing moisture from the surrounding air. How to reduce frizz A few simple hair care habits may help keep frizz under control. •Use a conditioner after washing your hair. •Avoid rubbing your hair roughly with a towel. •Gently squeeze out excess water and pat your hair dry. •Try a leave in conditioner for extra moisture. Use an anti frizz serum when needed. Choose hair products based on their ingredients rather than only their price or popularity. Tips. Humidity can change the way your hair behaves especially if you have curly porous or chemically treated hair. Using the right products and handling your hair gently can help keep it smoother and easier to manage in humid weather.

  • 6 Best ways to eat chia seeds

Chia seeds are often called a superfood because they contain fiber, protein omega-3 fats and several important minerals. Adding them to your diet may support digestion heart health and healthy blood sugar levels. Nutrition experts say chia seeds can be a healthy addition to meals but they should be eaten correctly to avoid possible problems. Why are chia seeds good for you? Chia seeds contain soluble fiber, plant-based omega-3 ALA, protein and antioxidants.  They also provide minerals such as calcium magnesium and phosphorus which are important for normal body functions. About 28 grams or around two tablespoons, of chia seeds can provide roughly 9–10 grams of fiber making them an easy way to increase your daily fiber intake. Never eat dry chia seeds alone One important safety tip is to avoid swallowing dry chia seeds by themselves. Chia seeds can absorb a large amount of liquid and may expand several times their original size. If swallowed dry they could become stuck in the throat or cause a blockage in the digestive tract. It is safer to mix them with enough liquid or add them to foods that contain moisture. Make chia pudding Mix chia seeds with milk or almond milk and leave them for a few hours or overnight.  The seeds absorb the liquid and develop a soft pudding like texture. This is an easy and tasty way to enjoy chia seeds while making them easier to eat. Add them to smoothies Chia seeds can be blended with fruits vegetables or other smoothie ingredients. They add extra fiber and can make the drink thicker and more filling. Make a “Chia Egg” Chia seeds can also be used as an egg substitute in some recipes. Mix one tablespoon of chia seeds with about three tablespoons of water and let the mixture turn into a gel.  It can then be used as a binder in foods such as muffins, pancakes and bread. Add them to oatmeal Sprinkle chia seeds into hot oatmeal or overnight oats. The liquid in the oats helps soften the seeds while adding extra fiber and nutrients to your breakfast.  Mix them with yogurt Adding chia seeds to yogurt is another simple option. The moisture from the yogurt helps soften the seeds while the combination provides fiber and other nutrients. Use them as a topping You can sprinkle chia seeds over foods such as oatmeal yogurt smoothies or other hot and cold dishes. However make sure you consume them with enough liquid rather than eating a large amount of dry seeds on their own. Chia seeds are not the only source of Omega-3 Chia seeds are a good plant based source of ALA omega-3. However, the body does not convert ALA into EPA and DHA as efficiently as it gets them from marine sources. Therefore chia seeds can be part of a healthy diet but they should not be considered the only source of omega-3 fats. The bottom line Chia seeds can be an easy way to add fiber protein and healthy fats to your diet. The safest approach is to soak them or mix them into moist foods rather than swallowing them dry.
