  • Ultrasound patch may help improve sleep without medication

    Scientists at the University of Texas in the United States have developed an advanced wearable patch that may help people enter REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep more quickly and remain in this stage for longer without surgery or medication. According to scientists, the device called NEUSLeeP combines electrodes that monitor brain activity in real time. Researchers say the technology can target deeper areas of the brain associated with REM sleep while simultaneously monitoring the brain’s response. Scientists tested the patch on 28 people and the findings were published in the scientific journal Nature Communications. According to the study, people using the device entered REM sleep an average of 43 minutes earlier and spent approximately 16 additional minutes in this stage. The effect was observed both in healthy individuals and in people experiencing sleep problems. Participants reported that the patch was comfortable to wear while only minimal side effects were observed during the study. Researchers also found that ultrasound treatment caused certain changes in the body associated with stress regulation. Among healthy participants, a significant increase in heart-rate variability was observed which is generally associated with the body’s ability to cope with and respond to stress. Changes were also observed in brain circuits involved in emotional processing during brain imaging. According to researchers, these findings are important because disruptions in REM sleep have been linked to mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Scientists emphasized that further large-scale research is needed before NEUSLeeP can be used as a standard treatment. Future studies are planned to determine whether the technology could also be effective for people experiencing chronic insomnia, depression and PTSD.

  • Scientists use sharks to improve hurricane forecasts

    Scientists at the University of Delaware in the United States are investigating whether sharks can be used to improve predictions of hurricane intensity and serve as ocean-observing systems for collecting marine data. Researchers at the University of Delaware are attaching sensors to sharks that measure ocean temperature, electrical conductivity and depth. Electrical conductivity is related to the amount of salt in the water. According to Aaron Carlisle, a professor at the university’s School of Marine Science and Policy and the lead researcher of the study, animal-mounted sensors have been successfully used in marine research for several years particularly in areas where scientific observations are limited. Researchers say sharks are suitable for this research because they are abundant, inhabit vast areas of the ocean and are relatively easier to access than many protected marine mammals. So far, shark tagging has mainly been used to study their movements and habitats. However, in this new research, scientists are selecting sharks that can collect useful data for hurricane forecasting and swim close enough to the ocean surface for their tags to transmit information via satellites. Preliminary analyses in the North Atlantic have identified shortfin mako sharks, blue sharks, smooth hammerhead sharks and juvenile great white sharks as suitable species for the research. According to Aaron Carlisle, scientists are paying particular attention to the heat in the upper layer of the ocean known as the “mixed layer.” This layer of water plays an important role in the intensity of hurricanes because a warmer mixed layer can contribute to the formation of stronger hurricanes. Caroline Wiernicki, a doctoral student at the University of Delaware said the shark-tagging process begins in early May, when several migratory shark species come closer to the coast after spending the winter in remote areas of the Atlantic Ocean. Researchers travel 50 to 65 kilometres offshore in a research vessel where they deploy baited lines and typically wait two to three hours for sharks to approach. A tag is attached to the shark’s dorsal fin. When the shark swims near the surface, the tag connects with a network of satellite receivers and transmits data. Carlisle said the tagging process is completed rapidly similar to a “pit crew” during a motor race and usually takes less than five minutes. Shark tagging is carried out under institutional animal-care oversight to minimize its impact on the animals. The tags are attached using materials that gradually dissolve and eventually detach on their own. Before each shark is released back into the ocean, its health is examined because stress or injury could affect its natural behaviour and consequently, the reliability of the data collected. Caroline Wiernicki said sharks are portrayed as extremely frightening animals in movies whereas in reality they are relatively calm creatures. According to the researchers, if the project proves successful, data collected from sharks could help improve forecasts of the intensity of hurricanes approaching the US East Coast. This information could provide more reliable forecasts to coastal communities from North Carolina to Massachusetts helping them prepare for storms and improve coastal protection. Aaron Carlisle said sharks are remarkable animals that are exceptionally well adapted to life in the ocean and there is much that humans can learn from them. If it is proven that sharks can also benefit humans, it would be a win-win situation for both.

    You may have heard people say that going to the gym or lifting weights can stop your height from growing.  Because of this belief some young people avoid exercise and weight training. But is this really true?  Let’s find out. Going to the gym has become very popular among people who want to stay fit and healthy.  Some people exercise to lose weight while others want to gain muscle and strength. Gym workouts are especially popular among young people. However several myths about weight training still create confusion. One common myth is that going to the gym at a young age can stop height growth. This belief is especially common among teenagers and young people between 18 and 20 years old. Can weightlifting stop height growth? Many people believe that lifting heavy weights at a young age can prevent the body from growing taller especially when a person carries heavy weights on their shoulders. However there is no strong scientific evidence that normal strength training stops a person’s height from increasing.  Weightlifting itself does not automatically stop growth. However young people should be careful when doing heavy workouts.  Using too much weight or exercising with the wrong technique can cause injuries.  Younger people should learn proper form and when possible exercise under the guidance of a qualified trainer. What actually affects height? A person’s height is mainly influenced by genetics. Hormones nutrition sleep and overall lifestyle can also play a role in healthy growth.if the body does not produce certain growth related hormones properly it can affect normal development. Poor nutrition can also prevent the body from getting the nutrients it needs for healthy growth. The body also contains growth plates which are areas near the ends of certain bones that help bones grow longer during childhood and adolescence.  These growth plates naturally close as a person reaches physical maturity. Therefore going to the gym does not simply stop height growth.  A healthy diet proper exercise enough sleep and safe workout techniques are more important for overall growth and fitness.

  • Remembering Maryam Mirzakhani

    When Maryam Mirzakhani approached complex mathematical problems, she did not rush to find immediate solutions. Instead, she unrolled large sheets of paper across her floor, sat down with markers, and drew intricate shapes, loops, and abstract surfaces. A ritual so visual that her young daughter described her rigorous research simply as painting. Behind those quiet, methodical sketches was one of the most brilliant mathematical minds of her generation. A scholar whose work reshaped our understanding of spatial geometry and dynamic systems forever. Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, Mirzakhani’s early childhood ambitions centered on literature rather than numbers. She devoured books and dreamed of writing novels. However, during her high school years, her focus shifted dramatically as she discovered the creative, puzzle-like nature of advanced mathematics. Her extraordinary talent surfaced on the world stage when she represented Iran at the International Mathematical Olympiad, winning gold medals in back-to-back years at ages 17 and 18, including a flawless top score in her second appearance. After completing her undergraduate studies at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Mirzakhani moved to the United States to pursue graduate research. At Harvard University, under the mentorship of Fields Medalist Curtis McMullen, she tackled complex problems in theoretical geometry that had baffled researchers for decades. She earned her PhD at age 27, producing a doctoral dissertation so groundbreaking that it yielded multiple papers published in top-tier mathematical journals. Her career progressed rapidly, leading to a full professorship at Stanford University by the age of 31. Mirzakhani’s work specialized in theoretical areas such as hyperbolic geometry, Riemann surfaces, and moduli spaces. She’s expert in abstract concepts that involve understanding the geometry and dynamic possibilities of complex curved surfaces. While her research was firmly rooted in pure mathematics, it held profound implications for theoretical physics, quantum field theory and cryptography. In 2014, at the age of 37, Mirzakhani achieved a historical milestone. She was awarded the Fields Medal, officially known as the International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics. Widely regarded as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for mathematics, the honor is presented only once every four years to exceptional scholars under 40. Mirzakhani became both the first woman and the first Iranian ever to receive the award since its establishment in 1936. Despite national and international acclaim, Mirzakhani remained famously modest. She often referred to herself as a slow mathematician. She emphasized that true insight comes from patience, resilience, and a willingness to feel lost before finding a breakthrough. To her, mathematics was not about fast calculations, but about deep, enduring understanding. Tragically, her life was cut short. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, she continued her scholarly pursuits while fighting the disease. By 2016, the cancer had spread to her liver and bones. On July 14, 2017, Mirzakhani passed away at Stanford Hospital at the age of 40. Her passing sparked widespread tributes across the globe, with academic institutions, world leaders, and fellow scientists celebrating her contributions. Today, her legacy endures as a testament to human curiosity. Her life is an enduring inspiration for women pursuing careers in science and mathematics worldwide.    

  • Are protein supplements safe for teens?

    Fitness and bodybuilding are becoming increasingly popular among young people. Many gym goers and athletes use protein powders and other supplements to build stronger muscles and improve their physical performance. But are these products always safe? A medical study published in the Proceedings journal of Baylor University Medical Center examined the effects of protein supplements. The researchers described protein powder as a “double edged sword” because it can be useful in some situations but may also cause problems when used incorrectly or unnecessarily. Protein is important for growing bodies The teenage years are an important stage of physical growth.  Protein helps the body build and repair muscles strengthen bones produce hormones and enzymes support the immune system and maintain overall growth. Most young people can get enough protein from a balanced diet. Foods such as milk, yogurt eggs, lentils, beans soy, fish, chicken lean meat nuts and seeds are good sources of protein. When are supplements needed? Many young people start drinking protein shakes after joining a gym playing sports or watching fitness videos on social media. Experts advise against using protein powders simply because a friend gym trainer or social media influencer recommends them. However some young people may need extra protein because of intense training dietary restrictions or certain health conditions. In such cases supplements should be used only with advice from a doctor or qualified nutrition professional. More protein does not mean more muscle Taking large amounts of protein does not automatically lead to bigger or stronger muscles.  Muscle growth also depends on regular strength training, enough calories proper sleep, rest and individual factors such as genetics. Taking more protein than the body needs can also add extra calories to the diet and may contribute to weight gain especially when physical activity is low. Some protein powders may contain extra ingredients. Some protein powders available in the market may contain added sugar artificial sweeteners, herbal ingredients extra calories or stimulant substances. The quality of supplements can also vary. Some products may not be tested as carefully as medicines which can create a risk of unwanted or undeclared ingredients. Who should be more careful? Young people with kidney disease or certain metabolic conditions should not take high protein supplements without medical advice. Anyone who is replacing regular meals with several protein shakes every day following an extremely restrictive diet or experiencing stomach problems after using protein powder should stop and seek professional advice. Protein shakes are not a replacement for food. Protein shakes cannot replace a healthy and balanced diet. Regular foods provide much more than protein. They also supply fiber healthy fats, vitamins minerals calcium iron and other nutrients that are important for healthy growth and development. Healthy habits come first for most young people, a balanced diet, regular exercise proper sleep and enough rest are the foundation of good health and fitness. Protein supplements can be helpful in specific situations but they should not be used simply because they are popular. If extra protein is needed it is best to choose the right amount and product with guidance from a qualified health professional.

    Marc Padeu is reimagining renaissance masterpieces

    In the global art world, classical European masterpieces have long held a dominant position in defining sacred aesthetics, grand narratives, and historical gravity. However, Cameroonian visual artist Marc Padeu is challenging this historical monopoly by taking the iconic compositions of Old Masters such as Caravaggio, Diego Velázquez, and Titian. He’s transplanting them directly into the lush, everyday landscapes of rural Central Africa. Padeu’s striking large-scale canvases reimagine classic biblical motifs and European artistic traditions against the backdrop of cocoa plantations and rural villages in Cameroon. Far from being a mere imitation of Western techniques, Padeu’s work represents a deliberate re-centering of world history, spiritual heritage, and local identity. A Dual Spiritual and Cultural Inheritance Born and raised in Cameroon, Padeu grew up navigating two distinct spiritual and cultural realities. The formal structure of Catholic devotion and the indigenous customs of Bamiléké animism. This dual background permeates his paintings, where sacred rituals and everyday agricultural labor exist side by side. In Padeu’s compositions, classical Christian iconography such as the baptism of Christ, the martyrdom of saints or solemn biblical gatherings is integrated into scenes of fieldworkers harvesting cocoa pods along riverbanks. Rather than treating these scenes as contradictory, Padeu views them as a natural reflection of human experience. He points out that the original stories of the Bible were ultimately rooted in the lives of ordinary people engaging in daily, unvarnished labor. Extending the Legacy of the Old Masters When Padeu incorporates the compositions, dramatic lighting, and gestures of European Renaissance masters, his objective is not passive homage or simple satire. Instead, he describes his creative philosophy as an extension of the art historical narrative. By placing Black African figures at the center of classical visual compositions, Padeu reframes European iconographic conventions as a shared human language. His paintings suggest that spiritual gravity, dignity and monumental art belong just as naturally to a Cameroonian cocoa harvest as they do to a 16th-century Italian cathedral. The Art of Patience and Global Recognition Padeu’s meticulous process reflects a deliberate rejection of fast-paced contemporary art production: Deliberate Pace: He completes rarely more than ten paintings per year. Long Incubation: Months are spent conceptualizing each piece before a brush ever touches the canvas. Global Reach: His recent solo exhibition in London highlights his growing prominence on the international stage.   Padeu’s ultimate creative ambition is both subtle and transformative. Rather than shaping his art to explain Africa to Western audiences, his goal is to present the wider world through an African lens. His work offers a perspective rooted firmly in the soils, traditions, and realities of Cameroon.

    America’s premier tourist destination

    During the early 1860s, an unexpected location ranked as the second most visited tourist spot in the United States: Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Trailing only Niagara Falls in popularity, the vast burial ground welcomed roughly 500,000 visitors every year. Families routinely spent their afternoons strolling through the peaceful grounds. They took horse-drawn carriage rides and admiring the elaborate grand monuments across the landscape. When Green-Wood first opened its gates in 1838, New York City had virtually no public parks, as Central Park had not yet been conceived. By the time the early 1860s arrived, Central Park was only beginning to open its initial sections to the public. As a result, rural cemeteries like Green-Wood filled a massive void for city dwellers seeking fresh air, natural beauty, and a quiet escape from urban density. The unique charm and sweeping vistas of the cemetery caught the attention of Rudolf Cronau, a German-born illustrator and artist. Born in Solingen in 1855, Cronau trained at the prestigious Düsseldorf Art Academy under Andreas Müller before establishing his own studio. In 1881, he ventured across the Atlantic on an assignment for Die Gartenlaube, a popular German illustrated magazine. His mission was to document the landscapes, bustling cities, and diverse people of the United States, bringing the American experience to life for European readers through a mix of written reports and detailed artwork. While visiting Brooklyn in 1881, Cronau captured the cemetery’s famous skyline view in a artwork titled View from Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn. Rendered in delicate watercolor and black ink, the piece now resides in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Cronau arranged his view in three distinct planes: an elaborate mausoleum anchored the foreground, Green-Wood’s iconic Gothic main entrance gates framed the middle ground, and the vast expanse of New York Harbor and the New Jersey coastline stretched out in the background. The mausoleum highlighted in the foreground of Cronau’s illustration belonged to John Anderson, a prominent NYC figure who amassed a massive fortune in the tobacco trade. Anderson, born in 1812, ran a well-known shop near Manhattan’s City Hall before eventually passing away in Paris in 1881.   Beyond serving as his final resting place, Anderson’s tomb was built as a bold political statement. Commissioned during the heights of the American Civil War, the Greek Revival-style structure was purposefully designed to symbolize a commitment to republican governance over monarchical rule, while serving as an unmistakable declaration of pro-Union support. Through art and architecture, a single cemetery hilltop managed to weave together personal wealth, national ideology, and one of the finest views of 19th-century New York.

  • Black holes are real

    In 1915, Albert Einstein published his ground-breaking theory of general relativity, radically altering humanity’s understanding of gravity. Rather than treating gravity as an invisible pulling force between masses, Einstein demonstrated that heavy objects warp the very fabric of space and time. Soon after, physicists realized that Einstein’s field equations contained a dramatic prediction. If enough mass were compressed into a small enough region, space-time would curve so intensely that nothing, not even light, could escape. However, Einstein himself remained deeply skeptical of these mysterious cosmic objects, which would later be named black holes. He believed that such extreme entities were merely theoretical mathematical artifacts products of idealized, perfectly symmetrical equations that could never exist in the chaotic reality of the actual universe. Einstein argued that real collapsing stars, possessing natural asymmetries and rotational forces, would scatter or bounce rather than implode into a point of infinite density. The Breakthrough of 1965 Ten years after Einstein’s death in 1955, a British mathematician and physicist named Roger Penrose forever settled the debate. In a revolutionary 1965 paper, Penrose provided the first rigorous mathematical proof that black holes are not merely theoretical curiosities, but robust and inevitable consequences of general relativity. Penrose realized that traditional analytical methods were insufficient to tackle the messy reality of stellar collapse. Instead, he introduced novel geometrical and topological concepts to physics, most notably the concept of a trapped surface. A trapped surface is a two-dimensional closed boundary where all light rays, regardless of whether they are directed inward or outward, are forced to converge toward the center. Once a collapsing star forms a trapped surface, an event horizon is established, creating a point of no return. Penrose proved that as long as gravity remains attractive and energy remains positive, the collapse cannot be stopped by any physical force or asymmetrical shape. The collapsing matter is driven relentlessly toward a singularity: a central region where density and space-time curvature become infinite, and where classical physics breaks down entirely. Transforming Astrophysics and Modern Cosmology Penrose’s singularity theorem fundamentally altered how scientists viewed the cosmos. It proved that black hole formation is a robust phenomenon that regularly occurs across the universe whenever massive stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and collapse under their own gravitational weight. Furthermore, Penrose’s mathematical techniques opened completely new avenues of theoretical research: The Big Bang Origin: Inspired by Penrose’s methods, a young Stephen Hawking applied similar topological techniques in reverse to show that the entire universe must have originated from an initial space-time singularity at the moment of the Big Bang. Penrose Diagrams: Penrose introduced conformal visual diagrams that allowed physicists to map out the infinite causal structures of space-time on manageable two-dimensional surfaces. The Information Paradox: Defining the strict causal properties of black hole event horizons laid the groundwork for decades of theoretical inquiry into how quantum mechanics interacts with extreme gravity. From Theoretical Paper to Nobel Prize For decades, Penrose’s work remained largely theoretical because observational technology could not directly detect black holes. However, in the 21st century, astrophysics caught up with Penrose’s mathematics. Ground-breaking discoveries—such as the detection of gravitational waves from colliding black holes by LIGO in 2015 and the Event Horizon Telescope’s first direct image of a black hole’s shadow in 2019—provided unequivocal empirical evidence supporting his theory.   Recognizing the immense impact of his 1965 breakthrough, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Roger Penrose half of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. More than half a century after its publication, Penrose’s paper stands as the single most critical contribution to general relativity since Einstein’s original masterpiece, proving that the most extreme objects in the universe are a tangible reality.

  • Riyadh, Ankara, Islamabad — and the Empty Chair in New Delhi

    By Rai Saad Ali Three folders, two green and one crimson, changed hands beneath a portrait of Saudi King Salman at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca, the ink still fresh on the pages inside. Erdoğan, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and Shehbaz Sharif held them up for the cameras at the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence on August 7th, 2026. It was a carefully staged image, and the message was unmistakable: three of the Muslim world’s most consequential states, standing together in Islam’s holiest city, making clear that the region’s old security order is no longer one whose terms they are content merely to accept. The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed that day by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, commits each signatory to treat an armed attack against any one of them as an attack against all three. It builds on the bilateral Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed by Islamabad and Riyadh in 2025, but Türkiye’s accession changes the strategic arithmetic considerably. What was previously a two-country understanding, rooted in a decades-old relationship, is now a trilateral framework spanning the eastern Mediterranean, the Gulf and South Asia — and it was signed without so much as a courtesy call to New Delhi. That mutual-defence clause is exactly what has prompted comparisons to NATO’s Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. But the parallel does not hold up well under scrutiny. It would be misleading to oversell this agreement as a “Muslim NATO.” It is not one. The pact names no adversary, creates no joint military command, and does not specify what response would be required if a signatory were attacked. It establishes a framework for defence cooperation and coordination rather than a NATO-style alliance with clearly defined operational commitments, and Saudi officials have stressed that the agreement is defensive in character and not directed against any particular country. That distinction matters. NATO is more than seventy years old and has evolved into a mature institutional and military alliance over generations; the Mecca Agreement is still in its infancy. Over time, it could develop stronger institutions and deeper coordination that bring it closer in character to NATO. For now, that remains a possibility rather than an established trajectory. Yet dismissing the agreement as merely aspirational would be its own mistake. Frameworks matter, especially when they are signed in Mecca rather than in a foreign ministry conference room. The choice of venue was not incidental. It was a statement about whose summit this is, and who now gets to convene the Muslim world’s most powerful states at a moment when Washington’s security guarantees have begun to look less than absolute. That erosion of confidence in Washington is precisely what makes the partnership’s internal logic so coherent: each partner brings something the others lack, and that complementarity is the pact’s real substance. Turkey supplies NATO’s second-largest standing military and an increasingly self-sufficient defence-industrial base — the same industry that in 2023 sold Saudi Arabia drones in what Ankara called its largest defence export deal to date, and which has for years supplied Pakistan with warships and trainer aircraft. Pakistan brings the only nuclear deterrent in the Muslim world and a military establishment with decades of experience training and advising Gulf forces. Saudi Arabia brings the capital and the religious legitimacy that only the custodian of the two holy mosques can offer. What ties these three complementary roles together is a detail that deserves precision rather than a slogan. Pakistan’s air force flies the JF-17 Thunder, co-produced with China. Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, has simultaneously built its own defence-industrial relationship with Beijing even as it remains formally inside the Western alliance system. That a NATO state, a nuclear-armed South Asian state with deep Chinese defence ties, and the Gulf’s foremost oil power can now sit inside the same mutual-defence framework shows how far the unipolar security order of the post-Cold War decades has already eroded. This is not a Pakistani ambition imposed on the region. It is a regional response to a security vacuum that Washington’s and Tel Aviv’s conduct in West Asia has itself created. The timing explains the substance. The pact was signed more than five months into the US-Israel war on Iran, a conflict that has sent missile and drone fire onto Gulf infrastructure and shipping, with Houthi strikes compounding the sense among Gulf capitals that American deterrence no longer covers them the way it once did.
