Why your brain stays alert in a new place

Have you ever slept easily in your own bed but struggled to sleep in a hotel, at a relative’s house or in a completely new place?  Even when the bed is comfortable and you are tired from traveling, you may wake up several times during the night.

This is quite common and is known as the “First Night Effect.” Experts say that when we sleep somewhere unfamiliar the brain may not fully relax. Instead part of it stays more alert and keeps checking the new surroundings.

Why does the brain stay alert?

When you enter a new environment your brain needs time to get used to unfamiliar sounds lights temperature and movements. During the first night one part of the brain may remain more active and respond quickly to unusual sounds or possible disturbances.

This is believed to be a natural way for the brain to adapt to a new environment.

How much can sleep be affected?

The First Night Effect does not affect everyone in the same way. Some people may sleep for around 20 to 30 minutes less than usual while others may mainly experience lighter or more interrupted sleep.

This can leave you feeling tired or less refreshed the next morning even if you actually slept for several hours.

Children and older adults may notice it more

Age can also play a role. Children and teenagers may be more sensitive to changes in their sleeping environment. Older adults may also notice changes in their sleep while younger adults may experience fewer effects. From an evolutionary point of view staying alert in an unfamiliar place may have helped humans remain aware of possible dangers.

It is not always the brain

Poor sleep in a new place can have many other causes. Travel fatigue, a different schedule room temperature bright lights outside noise an unfamiliar bed or pillow and other people nearby can all disturb sleep.

Some people sleep better away from home

Interestingly the First Night Effect does not happen to everyone. Some people actually sleep better in a new place.

Someone who is extremely tired after a long journey may sleep deeply despite being in unfamiliar surroundings. Similarly people who experience stress or poor sleep at home may find a new environment relaxing and sleep better.

Worrying about sleep can make it worse

Sometimes the biggest problem is not the new place but the fear of not being able to sleep. If you go to bed thinking, “I won’t sleep tonight” you may become more anxious and make it harder for your brain to relax.

People who worry a lot about sleep may be more sensitive to the First Night Effect.

How to sleep better in a new place

A few simple habits may help your body and brain adjust. Keep your usual sleeping and waking times as much as possible. Make the room quiet dark and comfortably cool.

Reduce phone and laptop use before bedtime.

Give yourself some time to relax after arriving instead of going straight to bed. Take a familiar pillow blanket or other comforting item if possible.

Read a book listen to soft music or follow another relaxing bedtime routine.

Most importantly do not panic after one bad night of sleep. In many cases the brain becomes familiar with the new surroundings and sleep improves naturally. So, if you wake up several times during your first night in a hotel or another unfamiliar place.

it does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Your brain may simply be taking time to decide that the new environment is safe.

  • Keep insulin safe in monsoon

    Monsoon rain may bring relief from the heat but it can create new problems for people with diabetes especially those who use insulin. Health experts say high humidity and changing temperatures can affect insulin if it is not stored properly. According to diabetes specialist Dr. Sameer Bhardwaj many people believe that keeping insulin away from direct sunlight is enough. However during the monsoon season high humidity can also damage insulin and reduce how well it works. If insulin loses its strength a person may continue taking the usual dose but their blood sugar levels can still rise without any clear reason. This can increase the risk of diabetes related health problems. Experts explain that insulin is a sensitive protein hormone that must be stored at the correct temperature. Too much moisture or frequent temperature changes can affect its quality even if the insulin looks normal. Doctors say there are three common mistakes people make during the monsoon. The first is relying only on cooling bags or cooling wallets. These products work well in dry weather but in humid conditions they may not stay cool enough which can reduce insulin’s effectiveness. The second mistake is storing insulin in the refrigerator door. Because the door is opened and closed often the temperature keeps changing. Experts recommend keeping insulin on the middle shelf of the refrigerator where the temperature is more stable. The third mistake is judging insulin only by its appearance. Insulin may still look clear and normal even after it has lost some of its effectiveness. If blood sugar levels keep rising despite following your diet medicine and insulin schedule the insulin itself may be the problem. Instead of increasing the insulin dose on your own doctors advise using a new insulin pen or vial that has been stored correctly and speaking with your healthcare provider if blood sugar remains high. To protect insulin during the monsoon experts recommend keeping insulin pens or vials in a clean airtight plastic or glass container to reduce exposure to moisture. It should also be stored at the recommended temperature and checked before each use. Health experts say that storing insulin properly during the rainy season is just as important as taking it on time. A small storage mistake can reduce its effectiveness and make blood sugar harder to control.

  • The relationship between past tradition and present innovation

    In T.S. Eliot’s Tradition and the Individual Talent (1919), the relationship between tradition and innovation is conceived as a structural rejection of the Romantic rebels who came a century before. The English Romantics (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats) built an aesthetic identity on iconoclasm, intense individualism and radical rupture. In contrast, Eliot’s Modernist manifesto counters with historical humility, restraint and continuity. The Romantics operated as cultural iconoclasts. They emerged alongside the upheaval of the French Revolution. Poets like Shelley (Mont Blanc, Prometheus Unbound) explicitly rejected established institutional, religious and literary orthodoxies. For the Romantics, literature advances by breaking away from previous generations (especially Neoclassicism). The past is often viewed as a restrictive cage or a set of dead conventions that inhibit free human consciousness. Originality means creating something unprecedented from within the self. Authenticity is an act of poetic rebellion against tradition. In Tradition and the Individual Talent, Eliot argues that attempting to exempt oneself from the past is a delusion. Originality does not mean destroying past structures. In fact, it means acquiring a historical sense through arduous labor. Eliot reframes innovation as an internal readjustment of an existing system. A new poet cannot be rebellious in isolation. The poet’s work only gains aesthetic value when set among the dead poets of Western literature. It’s to see how it reshapes the entire dynamic order. Wordsworth famously defined poetry as the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. The Romantic movement centered the poet’s personal ego, subjectivity and unique psychological vision as the ultimate authority of art. The poet was a heroic prophet pouring out their soul. Eliot mounts a direct attack on this subjective expressivism. He famously counters: Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion. It is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. To Eliot: The poet is not a heroic rebel, but a receptacle or catalyst (the platinum filament metaphor). The artist’s progress is a continuous extinction of personality and surrender to the literary heritage. Art should be judged as an autonomous, objective entity. It must be completely detached from the biographical life or emotional state of the human being who wrote it. Where the Romantic rebels viewed art as a wild, subjective act of liberation. Where the individual genius stands against society and past history. There and then, T.S. Eliot lowers the ego of the artist. Eliot redefines the individual talent not as a lone rebel storming the doors of literature. Individual talent is as ahistorically conscious craftsman who earns a place in the canon. This can only be by submitting to, learning from, and subtly altering the tradition that came before.  

  • Survey finds divide over AI

    A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that artificial intelligence (AI) experts and the general public have very different opinions about the future of AI. While experts are mostly positive about its impact many people are worried that AI could replace jobs and create new challenges. According to the survey, 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive effect on the United States over the next 20 years. In comparison, only 17% of the public share that view. Experts are more confident that AI will improve the way people work and help grow the economy. However many people are concerned that AI could reduce job opportunities especially in roles that depend on human workers. The report also highlights the jobs experts believe are most likely to be affected by AI. About 73% think cashier jobs could be replaced followed by truck drivers (62%) journalists (60%) factory workers (60%) and software engineers (50%). The public generally agrees with these predictions although only 33% believe truck drivers are at high risk. Both experts and the public agree that healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring the greatest benefits. They believe AI could improve medical care and support better treatment. At the same time both groups are concerned that AI may not improve the accuracy of news or election coverage. The survey also found strong support for greater control over AI. Many respondents believe governments may struggle to regulate the technology effectively as it continues to develop. Another finding is the difference between male and female AI experts. Around 63% of male experts expect AI to have a positive impact on the United States compared with 36% of female experts. Women were generally more cautious saying the technology could have both benefits and risks. The report also notes that women remain underrepresented in the AI industry. Researchers suggest that increasing women’s participation in AI development could lead to more balanced technologies. They also point out that many jobs with a large number of female workers such as administrative and customer service roles are becoming more automated increasing the risk of job losses. Overall the report shows that understanding both expert opinions and public concerns is important. As AI continues to grow balancing its benefits with responsible rules and safeguards will be essential.

  • Monsoon may increase fungal infections

    During the monsoon season the number of people developing fungal infections between their toes often increases. Health experts say this is mainly because of extra humidity and sweat which create the perfect environment for fungus to grow. Contrary to popular belief rainwater itself does not cause fungal infections. The real problem is when the skin stays wet for a long time. Moist skin allows fungus to grow more easily. According to dermatologist people with diabetes obesity weak immune systems or excessive sweating are at a higher risk. In these individuals fungal infections may take longer to heal and are more likely to return. Fungal infections usually affect warm damp areas of the body including the armpits groin waist neck under the breasts between the fingers and toes feet and scalp. Common symptoms include itching, redness burning flaky skin and red rashes. Experts say wearing wet clothes staying in sweaty clothing for long periods using damp shoes or socks or wearing tight fitting clothes during the rainy season can greatly increase the risk of infection. Keeping the skin clean and dry is one of the best ways to prevent it. The scalp can also be affected during the monsoon. High humidity may keep the scalp damp for longer allowing fungus and bacteria to grow. This can lead to dandruff itching an oily scalp and in some cases hair loss. Doctors also warn against leaving hair wet after getting caught in the rain. It is best to rinse your hair with clean water and dry it completely to reduce the risk of scalp infections. Avoid self treatment health experts advise against buying anti itch or antifungal creams without consulting a doctor.  Some creams contain steroids that may temporarily reduce itching but can allow the fungal infection to spread further making it harder to treat later. Stopping treatment as soon as symptoms improve is another common mistake.  Doctors recommend completing the full course of medicine as prescribed to prevent the infection from coming back. Tips to prevent fungal infections •Keep your skin and scalp clean and dry. •Change sweaty clothes as soon as possible. •Avoid wearing wet shoes or socks for long periods. •Wear loose cotton clothing. Eat a balanced diet to support a healthy immune system. Do not use skin or hair creams without medical advice. Experts say early diagnosis proper treatment and good hygiene can help prevent fungal infections and reduce the chances of them returning.

  • Journalism Education in AI Era: Harmonizing Traditional Skills and Emerging Technologies

    By Muhammad Aaraiz Altutmish  Two weeks ago, I attended a workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at the Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). The Workshop fetched together students, media persons, and experts to address one of the most significant topics framing advanced communication: the impression of AI on Media & Journalism.  Across the set of captivating sessions, presenters highlighted how Artificial Intelligence revolutionizing newsrooms, altering the way journalists collect information, inspect the facts and generate content. The fast development of technology specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI) has reshaped the advance digital world. AI is no longer a far-off concept; it has already integrated into the newsrooms and become a part of modern media networking. Therefore, media professionals and journalists can’t neglect this technology anymore. Instead they are continuously expected to develop their expertise and to modernize their skillset according to the changing media environment. This circumstance raises a significant question for journalism students who aim to foster their careers in the media industry. Should they first concentrate on learning the traditional basics or foundations of journalism, or should they prefer AI and developing technologies? While AI is transforming the means of working in media industry, journalism students are still needed to practice and learn the conventional principles and standards of journalism that have long been instructed in academic institutions. The AI development has brought prominent changes to writing, editing, publishing and content creation. Most of the operations can now be done in more quick and efficient way. Research functions have become effortless and many of newsroom tasks have been managed via technological tools. These advancements have transformed the media organizations operate and have affected many aspects of journalistic practices. Regardless of these changes, journalism education proceeds to emphasize the conventional methods of reporting, news values, interviewing techniques, fact- verification, and other foundational skills. Students are expected to master these standard practices while they also have to upskill themselves understanding and adapting to AI driven technologies and tools. As a result, journalism students often face the challenge of learning both traditional techniques and mastering themselves to developing technological skills within the same academic timeframe. This challenge becomes even more substantial for upcoming generations of media education and profession. They will have the same timeframe of study as former generations, still they may need to master a wide range of subjects and practical skills. Alongside traditional training of journalism, they will also require to develop their skillset related to AI, Digital media technologies, data driven networking and developing newsroom techniques. Consequently, media instructors, academic institutions, field professionals, and experts are set upon with a significant problem. They must reflect upon that how journalism education can accommodate both traditional practices of journalism and developing technological requirements. The hurdle stems in empowering students to master a wider spectrum of knowledge and practical experience within the existing timeframes and educational structures. The development of AI in journalism has therefore produced a new educational reality. While conventional journalism stands a central component of media education, technological developments continues to transform professional expectations. This continuing transformation spotlight the growing requirement to confront how future journalists can productively learn both the traditional practices of journalism and developing skills needed in an AI-driven media environment.   • Why do car turn signals click?

    When you turn your car left or right you hear the familiar click-click sound from the turn signal. At the same time the arrow on the dashboard flashes to show the signal is working. Even though cars have become much more advanced this sound has stayed the same for many years. But have you ever wondered why? Turn signals first appeared in cars in the late 1930s. In older vehicles the clicking sound came from a thermal flasher. When the driver switched on the turn signal electricity heated a small metal strip.  As it bent from the heat it completed an electrical circuit and turned the signal lights on. The metal quickly cooled returned to its original shape and broke the circuit turning the lights off. This heating and cooling cycle repeated over and over making the lights flash. The movement of the metal strip created the well known clicking sound. As technology improved car makers replaced the old thermal system with electromagnetic and later electronic systems controlled by computer chips.  These newer systems no longer need moving metal parts to flash the lights. However most modern cars still play the click click sound on purpose. Manufacturers keep it because drivers are used to hearing it and the sound reassures them that the turn signal is working correctly even though it is no longer mechanically necessary.
