Why marginalia is devised for conversation

For centuries, books were treated as sacred, untouchable artifacts. Readers were taught to open a spine with reverence, turn pages by the edges, and never, under any circumstance, mark the paper. But in the modern reading culture, a quiet revolution has taken root: marginalia is no longer viewed as defacement. Today, it is recognized as a vital form of active intellectual engagement. Marking up a book transforms reading from a passive act of consumption into an active. Reading is a two-way dialogue between the reader and the writer.

When you read with a pencil, pen, or sticky tab in hand, your relationship with the text fundamentally shifts. You cease to be a distant spectator observing someone else’s thoughts. In other words, you become a collaborator. Underlining a sentence, drawing an exclamation point next to a surprising plot twist, or a counterargument in the margin forces your brain to process language at a deeper level. It requires you to articulate why a passage resonated or failed.

Furthermore, annotated books serve as personal time capsules. When you reopen a novel you marked up five or ten years ago, it offers an unfiltered reflection into who you were at that exact moment in your life. You might find yourself cringing at an old marginal note. Then you agree passionately with a circled phrase, or realizing that a passage you completely ignored years ago now carries personal meaning. The book becomes a physical record not just of the author’s story, but of your own cognitive and emotional evolution. Edgar Allan Poe once wrote:

‘In getting my books, I have been always solicitous of an ample margin … for the facility it affords me of pencilling suggested thoughts, agreements and differences of opinion …’

Practically speaking, marginalia also sharpens critical thinking. Students, scholars, and casual readers alike find that tracking themes through custom color-coded tabs or brief summary notes at the end of chapters drastically improves retention and comprehension. It prevents the common phenomenon of eye-scanning where your eyes move across sentences while your mind wanders elsewhere. Annotation demands presence.

Ultimately, scribbling in the margins strips away the artificial pedestal we often place books upon. It reminds us that literature is not meant to sit pristine and untouched on a display shelf. Literature is meant to be wrestled with, questioned, celebrated, and lived in. The next time you open a book that challenges or moves you, don’t hold back. Pick up a pen, claim the empty white space on the page, and join a conversation that has been taking place across centuries.

    How fiction brain-trains compassion

    Empathy is the capacity to understand and share the feelings of another. It’s not merely an inherent personality trait; it is a cognitive muscle that requires exercise. While there are many ways to practice compassion in daily life, neuroscientists and psychological researchers have uncovered a uniquely powerful tool for training this mental capacity: reading deep, character-driven fiction. For decades, society viewed reading literature as a purely intellectual or escapist hobby. However, recent scientific studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have revealed that when we read a story, our brains process the experience in ways remarkably similar to real-world social interaction. When an author describes a character running through a dark forest, struggling with heartbreak, or feeling a sharp pang of injustice, the sensory and emotional centers in the reader’s brain light up as if the reader were experiencing those events directly. This neural simulation allows us to step entirely out of our own shoes and temporarily inhabit the subjective reality of someone else. Psychologists often refer to this ability as theory of mind. It’s the cognitive skill that enables human beings to attribute mental states (beliefs, intents, desires, emotions, and knowledge) to themselves and others. Life only permits us to live a single, localized existence defined by our specific background, culture, and circumstance. Literary fiction breaks through those physical and social barriers. Through the pages of a novel, a reader living in a quiet suburban town can intimately experience the internal struggles of an immigrant navigating a new city, an incarcerated individual fighting for dignity, or a historic figure facing a agonizing moral dilemma. Crucially, fiction tells us what people do. Also, it exposes why they do it. It grants us unprecedented access to the secret thoughts, doubts, and vulnerabilities that real people rarely reveal in public. By witnessing a character’s internal contradictions, readers learn that human behavior is rarely black-and-white. We develop a tolerance for ambiguity and a healthier skepticism toward snap judgments. When we close the book, that expanded perspective lingers in our conscious mind, subtly altering how we interact with co-workers, strangers, and loved ones. Furthermore, reading fiction builds emotional stamina. It asks us to sit quietly with uncomfortable emotions like grief, fear, longing, and regret without fleeing into digital distractions. In doing so, it expands our capacity to hold space for others when they undergo difficult seasons in real life. Literary fiction, therefore, is far more than entertainment. It is a quiet, radical act of bridge-building. Every time we turn a page and immerse ourselves in a stranger’s story, we perform a vital neurological exercise that softens our defenses, broadens our horizons, and reminds us of our shared humanity.  

  • AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton warns AI may escape human control

    Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton is widely regarded as the “Godfather of AI.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work on artificial intelligence technology. Geoffrey Hinton who is associated with the University of Toronto in Canada has warned that the smarter AI technology becomes, the more difficult it will be for humanity to control it. He has also expressed concerns about AI agents recently hacking real-world companies. Speaking to the media after an AI technology conference, Geoffrey Hinton said that such incidents are occurring as these systems become increasingly intelligent. He said, “As these systems become smarter, I think we will see more complicated incidents and their ability to escape our control will become much better.” Hinton said the problem is that humans may not be able to rely on or trust highly intelligent AI models. He explained, “I do not believe that we can simply control them or assume that they will not escape our control.” It is worth noting that in recent days, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have acknowledged that their AI models independently escaped controlled environments and hacked the systems of other companies. Hinton described these incidents as somewhat frightening and said that this is only the beginning of AI hacking. He said, “I think we may see numerous cyberattacks but the future is uncertain. People say defenders have more resources than attackers but the problem is that an attacker only needs to succeed once, whereas defenders need to succeed every time.” Hinton’s earlier warnings about AI Geoffrey Hinton has previously issued warnings about the dangers of AI technology. On one occasion, he said there was a 10 to 20 percent chance that the technology could gradually lead to the extinction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential risks posed by AI. He acknowledged that uncertainty surrounding AI can be unsettling because nobody knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like over the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it. Earlier, in August 2025 while speaking on a podcast, Hinton said that AI is not only learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand but there is also no reliable way to simply switch it off. Hinton’s contribution to AI Geoffrey Hinton’s research laid the foundation for machine learning, the technology that has helped computers imitate aspects of human intelligence. However, for the past several years, he has been campaigning for AI to be made safer. In 2023, Hinton left his job at Google, warning that malicious actors could use the technology to harm other people. In an interview some time ago, when he was asked about the pace of AI development, Hinton said that most experts in the field currently believe that at some point possibly within the next 20 years—humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans. He said, “That is a frightening thought. Right now, you can think of this technology as being like a three-year-old child and children grow up very quickly.” AI could transform world According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He said the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the growth of human physical strength because humans began relying on increasingly powerful machines. He explained that humanity is now doing something similar that could replace human intelligence meaning ordinary human intelligence may no longer advance at the same pace while machines continue to develop. When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said it would depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology. In his view, AI could have extraordinary effects on the medical field and could increase efficiency across almost every industry. However, he emphasized that humanity needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of this technology.

    Why August 12 total solar eclipse is so special?

    The last total solar eclipse occurred two years ago and once again millions of people will have the opportunity to witness this rare celestial event. This year’s eclipse is particularly special because some observers will see the total solar eclipse at sunset making it an exceptionally rare and breathtaking sight. According to NASA, the total solar eclipse will occur on August 12 but only a limited number of countries will experience totality. People in Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and a small part of Portugal will be able to witness the total eclipse. In Spain, the eclipse will coincide with sunset creating a spectacular view that is expected to captivate skywatchers. A partial solar eclipse will also be visible across many other parts of Europe and Africa including most European countries and several regions of North Africa. Russia will enjoy another rare phenomenon as a partial eclipse will be visible at both sunrise and sunset. On the remote Taymyr Peninsula, the partial eclipse will begin at sunrise while in another part of the country it will be seen at sunset. Solar eclipses occurring at sunset are extremely rare which is one of the reasons why this year’s event is considered so unique. According to Pakistan Standard Time (PST), the partial solar eclipse will begin at 10:34 PM, the total eclipse will start at 12:12 AM and the event will conclude at 2:58 AM.

  • New breakthrough against superbugs

    Bacteria that cause infections are becoming harder to treat because many of them no longer respond to common antibiotics. These bacteria known as superbugs have developed resistance to medicines that once killed them easily.  As a result infections that were once simple to treat are becoming much more dangerous. Health experts say that every year thousands of people die from antibiotic resistant infections. This growing problem also makes surgeries cancer treatments and many hospital procedures riskier because patients are more likely to develop infections that are difficult to cure. Now scientists have made a promising discovery that could help solve this problem. Instead of creating entirely new antibiotics researchers have found a way to make existing antibiotics work again. The new approach uses special compounds called antibiotic adjuvants. These compounds do not kill bacteria on their own. Instead they help antibiotics become effective again by weakening the bacteria’s defenses. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in the United States discovered a compound called PGHI-4. When they combined it with the powerful antibiotic vancomycin it successfully killed bacteria that had already become resistant to vancomycin. Vancomycin is commonly used to treat serious bacterial infections including those caused by MRSA and Clostridioides difficile (C. diff.). Over time however some bacteria developed resistance to this important medicine making treatment much more difficult. During laboratory tests, scientists found that PGHI-4 blocks an important bacterial enzyme called SagA. Without this enzyme the bacteria’s protective cell wall becomes weaker allowing vancomycin to destroy the bacteria once again. The treatment was especially successful against drug resistant Enterococcus faecium a bacterium known for causing difficult hospital infections. Professor John Moses of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said the discovery was the result of years of chemistry research. He explained that the newly found compound blocks an enzyme that helps bacteria resist antibiotics opening the door to more effective treatments. The research team also used a modern chemical method called Diversity Oriented Clicking (DOC) to create a library of more than 150 chemical compounds. Scientists believe this technique could speed up the discovery of new medicines, not only for antibiotic resistant infections but also for diseases such as cancer. Experts say that if future studies confirm these results the same strategy could eventually help treat other dangerous drug resistant infections including tuberculosis (TB). Doctors also warn that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have made antibiotic resistance much worse. They advise people to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor and to always complete the full course of treatment. This helps reduce the chances of bacteria becoming resistant to medicines. Scientists say this research is an important reminder that many of the biggest medical breakthroughs begin in laboratories where new discoveries can lead to better treatments and save lives in the future.

  • The Population Debate: Curse or Opportunity?

Economists use various indicators to measure development, and population is one of the most debated among them. A large population is often viewed as a hurdle to economic growth. However, every issue deserves to be examined from different angles. The question, “Is a large population a curse or a blessing?” cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. We need to move beyond the idea of population as a burden and understand the concept of the demographic dividend. What appears to be a curse can become a blessing when viewed through the right perspective and supported by the right policies. Research by the RAND Corporation and the World Bank has shown that countries with a growing working-age population can experience faster economic growth when supported by sound education, health, and employment policies. Whether a large population becomes an economic asset depends on governance and public policy. A growing population is not necessarily a curse because every additional mind brings new ideas, different perspectives, and fresh solutions to existing problems. One mind can accomplish one task, two minds can accomplish two, and millions of minds can achieve far more. That is the value of teamwork and collective human potential. Every individual possesses different skills, abilities, and talents that can contribute to national development. What many consider a burden may actually become a country’s greatest strength if those human resources are properly developed. This is the essence of the demographic dividend—the economic advantage that emerges when the working-age population becomes larger than the dependent population. Development economists describe this period as a “window of opportunity” rather than a guaranteed outcome. Highly populated countries can utilize their youthful population to strengthen their economies. After India, China, the United States, and Indonesia, Pakistan is the fifth most populous country in the world. This should be seen as an opportunity rather than a challenge because more than 65 percent of Pakistan’s population consists of young people. That gives the country a significant advantage. A demographic dividend can only be realized when the working-age population is educated, healthy, skilled, and productively employed. When more people are working and contributing to the economy, household savings increase, investment grows, government spending on dependents declines, and both economic output and per capita income improve. The World Bank has repeatedly emphasized that human capital—education, health, and skills—is one of the strongest drivers of long-term productivity and national income. The real challenge is identifying the policies required to achieve this dividend. A country can benefit only if it creates sufficient employment opportunities, provides quality education and skill development, ensures access to healthcare, encourages women to participate in the workforce, and maintains stable economic and public policies. When these conditions exist, the country enjoys faster economic growth, greater productivity, increased investment and savings, improved living standards, and stronger entrepreneurship and innovation. Economic growth becomes inevitable when people are hardworking, equipped with multiple skills from an early age, and capable of adapting to changing economic demands. Skilled and self-reliant citizens become the driving force of national development. Evidence from South Korea, Singapore, and Ireland shows that investment in education and skills transformed youthful populations into globally competitive economies. However, a demographic dividend can quickly become a demographic burden if employment opportunities and skills do not keep pace with population growth. The consequences may include rising unemployment, poverty, social unrest, and migration. Economists and demographers consistently argue that a demographic dividend is not automatic; it is an opportunity that must be earned through effective governance and strong institutions. Without adequate planning and investment, a large youth population can become a liability instead of an asset. The International Labour Organization has warned that persistent youth unemployment can reduce economic productivity and increase social instability. A dynamic economy capable of creating millions of formal-sector jobs each year is essential for absorbing a growing workforce. Human capital development should remain at the center of national policy. Strong educational systems, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), digital literacy, coding, digital finance, and technology-based curricula should be introduced from the early years of education. Equal opportunities for girls and women in education and employment are equally important. Pakistan also needs job creation, labour market reforms, export-led manufacturing, labour flexibility, investment in high-value industries such as technology, electronics, and specialized services, support for youth entrepreneurship and microfinance, and stronger healthcare infrastructure. UNESCO has consistently highlighted that technical and vocational education equips young people with practical skills that improve employability and economic resilience. Pakistan possesses one of the largest youth populations in the region, but this advantage can only be realized through greater investment in education, skills, and employment. In conclusion, population control alone is not a long-term solution to economic growth. Developing people’s abilities, expanding opportunities, and investing in human capital are far more effective. The experiences of countries such as Italy and Japan also demonstrate that declining populations and ageing societies create their own economic challenges. The real question is not how many people a country has, but how well it prepares its people to contribute to national development. Research across both developed and developing countries consistently concludes that people become an economic asset when governments invest in their education, health, productivity, and opportunities rather than viewing population solely as a number.
