Pakistan’s health system requires lasting reform

By Raja Ashraf

A country’s healthcare system is judged not only by the number of hospitals it has but also by whether people can access timely, affordable, and quality medical care. In Pakistan, public confidence in the health sector has weakened due to persistent challenges, including shortages of healthcare professionals, rising medicine prices, under-resourced hospitals, and the continued presence of unqualified medical practitioners. These issues require comprehensive and long-term reforms rather than short-term policy responses

Healthcare is a fundamental right closely linked to Article 9 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which guarantees the right to life. The Supreme Court has interpreted this provision to include access to essential healthcare services. Pakistan is also a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which commits the country to progressively ensuring the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for its citizens.

One of the most pressing concerns is the shortage of qualified doctors in rural and underserved regions. Although medical institutions produce thousands of graduates every year, many public health facilities outside major cities continue to face vacant positions. As a result, many communities struggle to obtain even basic healthcare services and are often forced to travel long distances for treatment.

The migration of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to foreign countries has further weakened the healthcare system. Better salaries, improved working conditions, career opportunities, and greater security abroad encourage many skilled professionals to leave Pakistan, creating significant gaps in public hospitals and specialized medical services.

The pharmaceutical sector also faces increasing challenges. Some multinational pharmaceutical companies have reduced their presence in Pakistan, raising concerns about future medicine availability and investor confidence. While local pharmaceutical manufacturers continue to meet much of the country’s demand, policymakers must create a stable regulatory and economic environment that supports both domestic production and responsible international investment.

The rising cost of medicines has become another major burden for families already affected by inflation. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases often require lifelong treatment, making affordability a growing concern. At the same time, the continued circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines highlights weaknesses in regulation and quality control, despite improvements in oversight by regulatory authorities.

Public hospitals also frequently experience shortages of essential medicines and emergency supplies, forcing patients to purchase drugs from private pharmacies. This increases treatment costs and can delay critical medical care during emergencies. Ensuring uninterrupted medicine supplies in government hospitals should remain a national priority.

Another persistent issue is the presence of unqualified medical practitioners, commonly known as quacks, particularly in areas where licensed healthcare providers are scarce. Tackling this problem requires stronger enforcement of existing laws alongside improved access to qualified medical professionals.

Pakistan’s healthcare challenges extend beyond these issues to include inadequate public health funding, ageing hospital infrastructure, weak primary healthcare services, limited mental health facilities, and uneven implementation of health policies across provinces.

Addressing these problems requires a comprehensive national strategy focused on increasing healthcare investment, improving working conditions for medical professionals, strengthening medicine regulation, modernizing pharmaceutical oversight, expanding preventive care, and reinforcing primary healthcare services. Investing in healthcare is not merely a public expense—it is an investment in human capital, economic growth, and national development.

Pakistan possesses skilled healthcare professionals, reputable medical institutions, and a capable pharmaceutical industry. With sound policymaking, stronger governance, and sustained investment, these strengths can be transformed into a healthcare system that guarantees every citizen safe, affordable, and quality healthcare. The need for reform is no longer in question; the real challenge is ensuring that action is not delayed any further.

George and Amal Clooney evacuate beloved French ho…

George and Amal Clooney have been forced to leave their picturesque home in southeastern France after fast-moving wildfires swept through the region, placing thousands of residents at risk. The Hollywood couple, who live in Brignoles with their nine-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, confirmed their evacuation as emergency crews battled the devastating blazes.  The Clooneys revealed the news in a heartfelt letter addressed to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond. In the message, the couple admitted they had no way of knowing whether their cherished home would survive the disaster. Despite the uncertainty, they expressed hope for the safety of their neighbors and pledged to stand by the local community during the recovery effort.  “At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” the couple wrote. They also stressed that, regardless of what happens to their property, they remain committed to helping Brignoles rebuild. “We love Brignoles and our friends who live there,” the letter added.  The wildfires have spread rapidly across several parts of southern Europe, including France, Spain, Italy and Greece, fueled by extreme heat and dry weather. French authorities have carried out thousands of evacuations as firefighters continue working around the clock to contain the flames. Reports indicate that some of the fires have grown to cover an area several times larger than Paris, highlighting the scale of the crisis.  George and Amal made France their primary family home in recent years, choosing the quieter lifestyle of Brignoles over the constant attention of Hollywood. The couple has previously spoken about wanting their children to enjoy a more private upbringing, away from the spotlight. George has often described life in the French countryside as peaceful and ideal for family life.  Although the family has temporarily left the area, their message made it clear that they remain emotionally connected to the town they now call home. Their promise to help with recovery efforts has been widely praised by local residents and supporters, who have applauded the couple’s commitment during a difficult time.  As firefighters continue battling the blazes, the fate of the Clooneys’ home remains uncertain. However, the couple’s focus appears to be on the safety of their community rather than their own property. Their response serves as a reminder that natural disasters affect everyone, regardless of fame, while also highlighting the importance of standing together in times of crisis.

    Finding Macbeth among the cul-de-sacs

There is a persistent cultural myth that high art requires crumbling castles, stormed heaths, or the frantic pulse of a metropolitan center. Suburbia, by contrast, is frequently dismissed as a landscape of cultural vacuum. The locality is defined instead by the hypnotic hum of lawnmowers, identical mailboxes, and the predictable choreography of the morning commute. Yet, to truly understand the works of William Shakespeare, one might argue that the quiet cul-de-sac is precisely where his characters feel most alive. Far from being an ivory-tower exercise, reading the Elizabethan canon against the backdrop of modern suburban life reveals a shocking truth. The human heart remains unchanged. It battles with the exact same ambitions, fears, and frailties that obsessed the playwright over four centuries ago. Shakespeare’s Macbeth Consider the iconic image of Macbeth encountering the three witches on a desolate heath. It’s a scene immortalized in classical art where armored men on horseback reel back in shock from supernatural prophets. On the surface, this imagery feels light-years away from a suburban subdivision. And yet, the psychological anatomy of Macbeth’s descent is intensely domestic. The internal dialogue of unchecked ambition, the quiet rationalization of moral compromise, and the creeping dread of consequences do not require a Scottish throne room. They can happen just as easily across a kitchen island or inside a quiet home office late at night. The weird sisters whispering prophecies of greatness are mirrored in modern life by the relentless cultural pressures to achieve. King Lear’s Misjudgment of His Children When we open a volume of Shakespeare, the distance between the sixteenth-century stage and the twenty-first-century lawn collapses. The suburban environment with its heavy emphasis on conformity and respectability provides a testing ground for tragedy. Iago’s subtle manipulations and toxic envy find their modern equivalents in politics, gossip, and the quiet resentments behind closed doors. King Lear’s tragic misjudgment of his children echoes in the universal anxieties of aging, and the desperate search for legacy. The stakes may appear smaller. They’re measured in property values and school districts rather than kingdoms and crowns but the emotional resonance is identical. Reading Shakespeare in Suburbia Furthermore, reading Shakespeare in suburbia changes how we interact with our immediate surroundings. It strips away the sterile academic intimidation that often turns classical literature into a chore to be checked off a syllabus. Instead, the verse becomes a lens through which the mundane details of daily existence are rendered extraordinary. The polite wave to a neighbor takes on a layer of complex subtext; the solitary evening walk under streetlights feels heavy with introspection. We begin to recognize that our neighbors are not merely background characters in a quiet life, but complex individuals harboring their own private comedies and tragedies.    Immutable Patterns of Human Behavior Ultimately, literature serves as a mirror. The suburban landscape offers a surface polished to a clear, sometimes uncomfortable reflection. Shakespeare did not write merely about royalty or historical epochs. He wrote about the immutable patterns of human behavior. By bringing his texts into the quiet corners of modern domestic life, we bridge the gap between antiquity and the everyday. We discover that drama is not something reserved for history books or theatrical stages, but an inescapable part of being human, waiting to be noticed right outside our front doors.
