You may have heard that the location of a Wi-Fi router plays an important role in its performance. Placing a router in a poor location can negatively affect the strength and range of internet signals. But what happens if you place a Wi-Fi router on the floor?

The answer is that a Wi-Fi router can be placed on the floor but generally, it is not an ideal location. One reason is that when a router is placed on the floor, a significant portion of its Wi-Fi signals may be directed toward the ground.

    Art lovers typically look upon dramatic chiaroscuro oil paintings, European portraiture, or biblical scenes while thinking about Rembrandt. Yet, buried within historical records and private collections lies a lesser-known chapter of the legendary master’s life. A profound fascination with South Asian art that inspired a unique series of fine Indian-style portraits. Rembrandt produced 25 delicate drawings depicting Mughal emperors and religious scholars Between 1656 and 1661. These works reveal an artist expanding his creativity through an encounter with Islamic and Indian aesthetic traditions half a world away. During the 17th century, Amsterdam was a booming node in global trade. The locality was largely powered by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Ships arriving at Dutch ports carried exotic commodities such as raw silk, muslin, spices, and fine craftsmanship straight from Surat in western India. There were original miniature paintings and sketches produced by imperial Mughal ateliers among these goods. Rembrandt was an avid collector who frequently spent beyond his means on art and curiosities from abroad. He acquired dozens of foreign items. An official inventory compiled by municipal authorities during his 18th-century bankruptcy proceedings recorded a slim book labeled item No. 203. The scholars believe that the book contained Mughal miniatures that captured his imagination. Rembrandt’s Mughal series represented a striking departure from his thick, layered oil technique. Instead of broad canvas strokes, he utilized fine brown ink, delicate wash, and subtle chalk accents to carefully document the distinctive attire and posture of Mughal royalty. He repeatedly portrayed Emperor Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal. That too alongside his sons and predecessor Emperor Jahangir. Every sketch rendered precise details of traditional jamas (stitched coats), elaborate patkas (sashes), turbans, and sarpech ornamentations with remarkable fidelity. Rembrandt drew exclusively on imported Torinoko paper. This paper was seemingly a smooth Japanese paper sourced through East Asian maritime networks. “Copying was his way of learning about another style of making portraits… show[ing] him working in a much more refined manner than he is known for.”   Stephanie Schrader, Curator of Drawings at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Rembrandt didn’t copy images mechanically. He adapted Mughal compositions into his own artistic vision. For instance, in his study titled Four Mullahs Seated Under a Tree, he altered the background and surroundings from the original Indian painting. This exercise directly influenced his later print Abraham Entertaining the Angels (1656). In the latter, he repurposed the relaxed seating arrangements of Mughal scholars to illustrate an important biblical motif. The subtle colors and calm poses he absorbed during this phase continued to echo in his late-career oil paintings. Rembrandt never set foot outside Europe. However, his engagement with Mughal miniatures demonstrates a spirit of cross-cultural curiosity during the Dutch Golden Age. He studied them diligently as an intellectual equal. He discovered new ways to capture human expression and line.

    In a strange burglary case from India’s Rajasthan state thieves surprised police by stopping to cook and eat a 14 egg omelet before stealing valuables from a house. According to Indian media reports the burglars broke into an empty home and stole an LED TV cash and jewelry worth thousands of dollars. Before leaving they went into the kitchen cooked a large omelet using 14 eggs and ate it. Police said the house belongs to Harjit Singh who was in Mumbai with his family for cancer treatment when the burglary happened. The thieves searched the house and left many rooms in a mess before escaping with the stolen items. Officers reached the scene after receiving a report and started an investigation. Since the family is still in Mumbai police have not yet confirmed the full list of stolen items or the total financial loss. A police official added that the neighborhood had a private security guard but the thieves managed to enter the house without being caught.

    Dogs may understand more than just the words we say. A new scientific study suggests that they can also notice human facial expressions and may recognize different emotions such as happiness, anger fear and sadness. Researchers from the  University of Vienna in Austria studied dogs’ brains to understand how they react to human faces.  Their findings were published in the scientific journal iScience. How the study was done In the first part of the study researchers used MRI scans to study the brains of eight dogs. The group included six Border Collies, one Labrador and one Golden Retriever. The dogs were shown pictures of unfamiliar people with happy or neutral facial expressions. When the dogs saw happy faces certain areas of their brains became more active. These areas are linked to thinking rewards and positive experiences. Researchers found strong activity in areas such as the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus.  The caudate nucleus is connected with the brain’s reward system and may also respond to social rewards. According to senior researcher Laura Cuaya, this suggests that a happy human face may have a positive emotional meaning for dogs even when the person is a stranger. Dogs may tell different emotions apart The researchers then wanted to know whether dogs could also recognize negative emotions. Twelve dogs were shown human faces expressing happiness anger, fear and sadness. Their brain activity was recorded and studied using machine learning methods. The results showed that dogs’ brains reacted differently to angry fearful and sad faces compared with happy faces. The researchers also found different brain activity patterns for each negative emotion. This suggests that dogs may be able to tell these emotions apart rather than seeing all negative expressions as the same. Dogs notice small changes First author Raul Hernandez Perez explained that humans can often understand emotions from very small changes in a person’s face.  Dogs may also pay close attention to these small changes. This ability may help explain why dogs are so good at understanding people. Unlike humans and monkeys dogs did not develop these social skills through the same evolutionary path. Instead thousands of years of living closely with humans may have helped dogs become highly sensitive to our behavior and signals. Interestingly both researchers are not only professional colleagues but also life partners. Their own two dogs, Odin and Kunkun were also part of the study. It is not only about the face The researchers say dogs do not depend on facial expressions alone. They can also notice changes in our voice body movements, behavior and even smell. So when a dog seems to know that its owner is happy worried or upset it may be combining many different signals at the same time. Training dogs for MRI scans The dogs had to receive special training before taking part in the research.  They learned to stay still inside an MRI scanner for short periods. At first they were trained to remain still for only one or two seconds.  The time was slowly increased as they became more comfortable. They were also introduced to the scanner the equipment and the sounds it made.  One of the hardest parts was teaching the dogs that doing nothing was actually their job. The dogs took part voluntarily and could leave whenever they wanted. The study has some limits The study was small and most of the dogs were Border Collies. This breed is known for being intelligent and good at understanding human social signals. Because of this the results may not be the same for every dog breed. More research is needed to find out whether different breeds understand human emotions in different ways. Scientists also want to learn how dogs use these emotional signals in everyday life. The study does not prove that dogs experience happiness sadness or fear in exactly the same way humans do. Scientists cannot directly know what a dog is thinking or feeling. However the brain activity does suggest that human facial expressions carry emotional information for dogs. The bond between humans and dogs goes far beyond simple commands. Dogs can pick up signals from our faces voices movements and behavior. This ability may be one of the reasons why the relationship between people and dogs is so strong.

One of the distinguishing features of FRAMES is its ability to function both online and offline. This capability addresses one of the most practical challenges facing digital governance in developing regions. Internet connectivity remains inconsistent in several rural and remote areas of Sindh, making continuous online operation difficult for many schools. Recognising this reality, FRAMES has been designed using an offline-first architecture. Even when internet connectivity is unavailable, teachers and school staff can authenticate their attendance through facial recognition. The application securely stores attendance records on the device and automatically synchronises the data with the central server as soon as internet connectivity is restored. This intelligent synchronisation mechanism ensures that schools continue to operate without disruption while maintaining the integrity and reliability of attendance records. By eliminating dependence on uninterrupted internet access, FRAMES becomes a practical solution for schools across diverse geographical regions of the province. Teachers, head teachers and district administrators must receive comprehensive training to ensure that the system is used correctly and consistently. Technical support mechanisms must remain readily available to resolve operational issues quickly and minimise disruptions. Equally important is the need to strengthen digital infrastructure. Reliable electricity, functional devices and stable internet connectivity remain essential components of successful digital governance. Although the application’s offline functionality addresses connectivity constraints, long-term sustainability will require continued investment in technological infrastructure across public schools. Another important consideration relates to data privacy and cybersecurity. Because FRAMES utilises facial recognition technology, the protection of biometric information must remain a top priority. Clear policies governing data collection, storage, encryption and authorised access will be essential to maintaining public trust. International experience demonstrates that digital governance initiatives are most successful when supported by robust legal safeguards and transparent data protection frameworks. Some observers have expressed concerns regarding the growing use of artificial intelligence and biometric technologies within public institutions. These concerns deserve thoughtful consideration. Technology should always serve the interests of citizens rather than replace human judgement. Accordingly, FRAMES should be viewed as an administrative support system that strengthens institutional accountability without diminishing the role of educational leadership or professional responsibility. Indeed, educational quality ultimately depends upon far more than attendance alone.
