The revival of Kathak in the heart of Lahore

In the quiet underbelly of Lahore’s Alhamra Arts Council, an ancient pulse woke from its slumber. It began with the whisper of clinking of ghungroos. Hundreds of brass ankle bells are braided onto raw cotton strings and then they wait to catch the cadence of a human heartbeat. For decades, the classical movement of Pakistan seemed confined to memories and clandestine. That’s how a heritage has been subjected to silence under the shadow of political conservatism. Yet inside the halls of the Lahore Kathak Festival, the art form proclaimed its victorious home-coming.

Kathak derives its name from katha: the Sanskrit word for story. The story starts even before borders were drawn across rivers and plains. Itinerant storytellers wandered the northern expanses of the undivided subcontinent. They combined Hindu mythology, Sufi mysticism and local folklore into rhythmic physical poetry. When these storytellers stepped into the imperial courts of the Mughals, the art form transformed. It absorbed Persian elegance, geometric precision and the subtle emotional nuances of Urdu ghazals. Kathak became a living art created from the shared civilizational fabric of the region. It became an artistic synthesis that belongs as fundamentally to the Indus valley as it does to the banks of the Ganges.

To embrace Kathak in modern Pakistan is to reclaim forgotten cultural roots. Post-partition artistic discourse attempted to segregate Pakistan’s creative identity from its ancient subcontinental ancestry. It resulted in treating classical dance with suspicion or elitist detachment. Pioneer icons like Sheema Kermani, Nighat Chaudhry and Bina Jawwad stood as solitary legacies during decades when dancing was criminalized. Their bodies became active spaces of memory when state patronage vanished.

Kathak – A Breathing Idiom

Now, a dynamic new wave of young performers is stepping into the limelight with devotion and fresh perspective. Organizers like Maan Sayeed and Momina Farooq Khan recently brought together maestros and young aspirants. They proved that classical dance is not a monument preserved, but a breathing idiom. On stage, young artists offered performances that blurred the line between heritage and modernity. Soloist Aliza Khalid, clad in radiant white, set her precise footwork to the haunting melodies of Seraiki folk music. Elsewhere, ensemble dancers whirled in breathtaking pirouettes (chakkars), their skirts flaring like blooming lotus petals in sync with the sudden claps of the tabla.

 

What makes this emerging movement so profound is its insistence on inclusivity and identity. The overflowing auditoriums where audiences stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisles signaled a hungry public desire to reconnect with an art form that speaks directly to the soul. It feels like through every intricate hand gesture (hasta) and rhythmic cycle (taal), these young dancers demonstrate that Kathak is an act of reclamation. It honors the land’s heritage, reminding us that art transcends temporal political boundaries to express the eternal human story.

The algorithm does not need to tell us who we should be. It only needs to shape the choices through which we construct ourselves. Human identity has always been influenced by external forces. Families transmit values. Schools develop habits of thought. Communities provide belonging. Cultures offer narratives through which individuals understand their place in the world. But these influences are usually visible. Digital influence is different. It often operates quietly. A recommendation does not present itself as authority. It presents itself as assistance. It does not say, “Become this person.” It simply arranges the possibilities from which a person chooses. This is why the question of algorithmic identity is not only about technology. It is about human agency. Because freedom is not merely the ability to make choices. Freedom also requires understanding how those choices are shaped. The challenge of the digital age is that recommendations can gradually become substitutes for exploration. Human growth has always depended upon encounters with the unexpected. A person discovers a passion through an unfamiliar book. A new idea changes a lifelong assumption. A conversation with someone different expands the boundaries of understanding. The unexpected has always played a central role in shaping identity. Yet algorithms operate through patterns. They learn from what we have already watched, searched, liked and chosen. Their purpose is to provide more of what appears relevant to us. This creates extraordinary convenience. But convenience can also create limitations. If every choice is shaped by previous preferences, the individual may gradually encounter less of what challenges, surprises or transforms them. The algorithm is excellent at recognising who we have been. Human beings are defined partly by who they can still become. This distinction lies at the heart of the debate about digital identity. A person is not simply the sum of past behaviour. Human beings possess the ability to change their beliefs, abandon old habits and discover new purposes. A system based on previous choices can predict tendencies. It cannot fully understand transformation. The philosopher Charles Taylor, in Sources of the Self, argued that human identity develops through the meanings and values people attach to their lives. Individuals understand themselves through relationships, moral commitments and ideas about what makes life meaningful. Identity requires reflection. It requires asking: Why do I value what I value? The digital environment complicates this question because it increasingly reduces the distance between desire and satisfaction. Instead of allowing individuals to wander, discover and sometimes struggle with uncertainty, it often provides immediate suggestions based on existing behaviour. The result is a subtle shift. We move from discovering ourselves to being continuously reflected back to ourselves. The system becomes a mirror. But a mirror that recommends what it wants us to see. This does not mean recommendations are harmful. They can introduce people to knowledge, entertainment and communities they might never have found otherwise. The problem begins when recommendation replaces curiosity. A map is valuable because it helps us navigate. But a life cannot be lived entirely through maps. Some of the most meaningful journeys begin when people choose paths they were never advised to follow. The transformation of identity becomes even more visible in the way people now present themselves to the world. Long before social media existed, the sociologist Erving Goffman examined how individuals manage impressions in everyday life. In The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, he argued that people often present different versions of themselves depending on their surroundings and audiences. The digital age has not created this tendency. It has amplified it. Online platforms have turned identity into something increasingly visible, measurable and constantly evaluated. The self is no longer only experienced privately. It is displayed through photographs, opinions, achievements and carefully selected moments. A person does not merely exist. A person appears. This creates a new tension between being and performing. The question slowly changes from: “Who am I?” to: “How am I perceived?” The desire for recognition is deeply human. Every society has valued reputation, belonging and acceptance. The problem begins when external approval becomes the primary measure through which individuals understand themselves. Experiences become shaped by their visibility. Achievements become symbols. Opinions become signals of belonging. The private self begins competing with the public self. The danger is not self-expression itself. Digital platforms have allowed millions of people to share ideas, build communities and express identities that may have remained unheard in previous eras.   • Riyadh, Ankara, Islamabad — and the Empty Chair in New Delhi

    By Rai Saad Ali Three folders, two green and one crimson, changed hands beneath a portrait of Saudi King Salman at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca, the ink still fresh on the pages inside. Erdoğan, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and Shehbaz Sharif held them up for the cameras at the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence on August 7th, 2026. It was a carefully staged image, and the message was unmistakable: three of the Muslim world’s most consequential states, standing together in Islam’s holiest city, making clear that the region’s old security order is no longer one whose terms they are content merely to accept. The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed that day by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, commits each signatory to treat an armed attack against any one of them as an attack against all three. It builds on the bilateral Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed by Islamabad and Riyadh in 2025, but Türkiye’s accession changes the strategic arithmetic considerably. What was previously a two-country understanding, rooted in a decades-old relationship, is now a trilateral framework spanning the eastern Mediterranean, the Gulf and South Asia — and it was signed without so much as a courtesy call to New Delhi. That mutual-defence clause is exactly what has prompted comparisons to NATO’s Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. But the parallel does not hold up well under scrutiny. It would be misleading to oversell this agreement as a “Muslim NATO.” It is not one. The pact names no adversary, creates no joint military command, and does not specify what response would be required if a signatory were attacked. It establishes a framework for defence cooperation and coordination rather than a NATO-style alliance with clearly defined operational commitments, and Saudi officials have stressed that the agreement is defensive in character and not directed against any particular country. That distinction matters. NATO is more than seventy years old and has evolved into a mature institutional and military alliance over generations; the Mecca Agreement is still in its infancy. Over time, it could develop stronger institutions and deeper coordination that bring it closer in character to NATO. For now, that remains a possibility rather than an established trajectory. Yet dismissing the agreement as merely aspirational would be its own mistake. Frameworks matter, especially when they are signed in Mecca rather than in a foreign ministry conference room. The choice of venue was not incidental. It was a statement about whose summit this is, and who now gets to convene the Muslim world’s most powerful states at a moment when Washington’s security guarantees have begun to look less than absolute. That erosion of confidence in Washington is precisely what makes the partnership’s internal logic so coherent: each partner brings something the others lack, and that complementarity is the pact’s real substance. Turkey supplies NATO’s second-largest standing military and an increasingly self-sufficient defence-industrial base — the same industry that in 2023 sold Saudi Arabia drones in what Ankara called its largest defence export deal to date, and which has for years supplied Pakistan with warships and trainer aircraft. Pakistan brings the only nuclear deterrent in the Muslim world and a military establishment with decades of experience training and advising Gulf forces. Saudi Arabia brings the capital and the religious legitimacy that only the custodian of the two holy mosques can offer. What ties these three complementary roles together is a detail that deserves precision rather than a slogan. Pakistan’s air force flies the JF-17 Thunder, co-produced with China. Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, has simultaneously built its own defence-industrial relationship with Beijing even as it remains formally inside the Western alliance system. That a NATO state, a nuclear-armed South Asian state with deep Chinese defence ties, and the Gulf’s foremost oil power can now sit inside the same mutual-defence framework shows how far the unipolar security order of the post-Cold War decades has already eroded. This is not a Pakistani ambition imposed on the region. It is a regional response to a security vacuum that Washington’s and Tel Aviv’s conduct in West Asia has itself created. The timing explains the substance. The pact was signed more than five months into the US-Israel war on Iran, a conflict that has sent missile and drone fire onto Gulf infrastructure and shipping, with Houthi strikes compounding the sense among Gulf capitals that American deterrence no longer covers them the way it once did. Riyadh, battered directly by this spillover, has drawn the obvious conclusion: a security guarantee is only as good as the willingness of the guarantor to honour it, and Washington’s recent conduct has not inspired confidence on that score. Ankara and Islamabad, for their part, were the two capitals best positioned to answer that call — one with hard power, the other with a record of reliability as a security partner to the Kingdom stretching back decades, long before this agreement made it formal. While Ankara and Islamabad were positioning themselves as reliable partners, New Delhi’s response has been telling in its caution. The Ministry of External Affairs said only that India is “closely following” developments and will “study the implications” — the language of a capital reacting to events it did not shape, rather than one setting the regional agenda. That contrast is the real story here, more than any single clause in the agreement’s text. That caution is not merely rhetorical. The substantive concern for India is not abstract: analysts have already flagged the live question of how a mutual-defence clause would be read if India were to conduct cross-border counter-terror operations against targets inside Pakistan, as it has in the past — even as others note such operations sit in a different legal category from state-on-state aggression.     European colonization brought smallpox to the Americas

    Historians have believed that the collapse of Indigenous populations across the Americas was triggered largely by smallpox. The historical manuscripts and missionary chronicles provided detailed eyewitness reports of these devastating outbreaks. Molecular proof links colonial-era American epidemics directly to Old World viral strains remained elusive. Now, a study published in the journal Science provides the definitive genetic confirmation researchers have sought for generations. It’s led by geneticists at Trinity College Dublin in collaboration with biological anthropologists at the Universidad de Chile. Researchers have successfully extracted and sequenced the oldest known smallpox viral genomes ever recovered in the Americas. The ancient viral DNA was retrieved from the naturally mummified remains of two individuals buried in northern Chile during the early Spanish colonial era. The viral samples were recovered from bone fragments belonging to an adult woman (aged 30 to 35) and a young man (aged 18 to 20) buried near Camarones Cove. A coastal site in northern Chile that once marked the southern reaches of the Inca Empire. The individuals had been naturally preserved by the hyper-arid climate. They’re wrapped in camelid wool blankets and interred in traditional cloth bundles. Scientists initially analyzed DNA from 13 individuals excavated at the site. They were searching for ancient bacterial infections such as tuberculosis. Instead, they discovered preserved traces of the variola virus. Guess what? It’s the deadly pathogen responsible for smallpox. Radiocarbon analysis alongside molecular clock estimates revealed that both individuals died between 1492 and 1631 CE. The violent era of Spanish conquest led by conquistadors like Francisco Pizarro. Because the two viral genomes recovered from the mummies were virtually identical, geneticists concluded that both individuals likely succumbed to the same localized outbreak or were infected by the same circulating viral strain.  Evolutionary Trajectory of a Global Killer When researchers mapped the newly recovered genetic sequences onto a global evolutionary tree of smallpox, the results were unequivocal. The Chilean viral strain positioned directly between medieval European strains. The strains included those previously recovered from Viking-era human remains and later 17th- to 19th-century strains circulating in Europe. This placement provides molecular evidence that the virus was introduced to Indigenous American communities from the Old World. The study yielded surprising insights into how pathogens evolve when introduced to vulnerable host populations. The variola virus originally evolved from a animal-host (zoonotic) pathogen. It was undergoing extensive genetic alteration up through the 16th century as it adapted to human hosts. Surprisingly, the virus’s rate of genetic change slowed dramatically during the peak colonial expansion of the 17th and 18th centuries. Researchers hypothesize that Indigenous populations lacked any pre-existing immunity. So, the virus had reached an evolutionary optimum. It could spread effortlessly without needing further genetic adaptation. The virus’s evolution accelerated once again in the late 18th and 19th centuries. It was after the introduction of Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine in 1796. Therefore, the evolutionary pressure forced the pathogen to adapt once more. Why This Discovery Matters Today Smallpox stands as one of the deadliest infectious diseases in human history. It has claimed hundreds of millions of lives over millennia before its official eradication in 1980 through global vaccination efforts. In the Americas, the disease inflicted physical casualties. The virus also shattered social structures and morale. The rapid disfigurement and death led communities to feel overwhelmed by forces they could neither treat nor comprehend. This discovery demonstrates the immense power of ancient DNA research. Tracing how pathogen evolution interacts with human migration, population immunity, and public health interventions provides critical context for understanding modern infectious disease threats today.  

  • Not all green foods are healthy

    Vegetables and fruits are generally considered an important part of a healthy diet.  Health experts also recommend including them in a balanced meal. However not everything that is green is automatically good for everyone. Some raw undercooked artificial or  rich green foods may cause health problems in  certain people. People with weak immune systems may be more sensitive to some foods and could experience allergies food reactions or other health problems. Green potatoes some green seafood products and foods with artificial green coloring are examples that may require extra care. Some people can also develop an allergy or intolerance to certain green foods. For example spinach may cause skin rashes or other allergic symptoms in sensitive individuals. In rare and serious cases a food allergy can lead to a dangerous reaction called anaphylaxis. Anyone who notices allergy symptoms after eating a particular food should seek medical advice. People with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) may also need to be careful with certain green vegetables.  Foods such as cabbage broccoli and Brussels sprouts can cause gas bloating stomach discomfort and pain in some people. People with kidney problems should also pay attention to their food choices. Spinach and Swiss chard contain high amounts of potassium. Eating too much of these foods may be risky for people with advanced kidney disease because their kidneys may have difficulty removing extra potassium from the body. This can lead to an unhealthy electrolyte balance. Eating too much of any food can cause problems and green foods are no exception. Large amounts of raw vegetables may cause bloating, constipation stomach pain or digestive discomfort in some people. In certain cases excessive intake of particular foods may also increase the risk of kidney stones electrolyte problems low blood sugar or allergic reactions. Some green fruits and vegetables may also cause digestive problems when eaten raw.  For example raw bananas and papaya may cause gas or stomach discomfort in some people. People who take warfarin a blood thinning medicine also known by the brand name Coumadin should talk to their doctor about eating large amounts of green leafy vegetables. These vegetables are often high in vitamin K, which can affect how warfarin works. The important thing is usually to keep vitamin K intake consistent rather than suddenly changing the amount. Spinach, Swiss chard and beetroot are also high in oxalates.  For some people who are prone to kidney stones, eating large amounts of these foods may increase the chance of developing stones again. Raw or lightly cooked green vegetables can provide many nutrients but they can sometimes be difficult to digest.  Vegetables such as cabbage broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain fiber that may cause digestive discomfort in some people especially when eaten in large amounts. Green potatoes are another important exception. When a potato turns green it may contain higher levels of a natural chemical called solanine.  Eating a large amount of solanine can cause nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases nervous system problems. Green potatoes should therefore be handled with care. Green tea is also not completely harmless in every situation. Poor quality green tea may contain unwanted impurities or low quality ingredients. Drinking very strong or very hot green tea may cause stomach discomfort in some people. Green tea also contains caffeine and too much caffeine can lead to nervousness shaking sleep problems or other side effects. Artificially green foods are not necessarily healthy either. Green colored candies sweet drinks and other processed foods may contain large amounts of sugar and provide little nutritional value.  Eating these foods regularly can contribute to tooth damage high blood sugar and other health problems. The main point is that green color alone does not make a food healthy.  The type of food the amount eaten how it is prepared and a person’s health condition all matter. People with food allergies, IBS, kidney problems or those taking certain medicines should be especially careful and seek medical advice when needed.

    Male infertility is becoming a growing health concern around the world and new research suggests that excess body fat may be one of the reasons behind the rising number of cases. A study from Aarhus University found that higher levels of body fat can negatively affect male reproductive health and reduce fertility. The researchers followed 1,058 young men, who were about 18 years and 9 months old when the study began. They measured body fat body weight and muscle mass to understand how body composition affects fertility. According to the researchers a healthy body fat percentage for men is generally between 8% and 19%, while 20% or higher is considered elevated. The study found that men with higher body fat had on average a 23% lower sperm count than those with healthier body fat levels. The researchers also found that excess body fat may disrupt hormones that play an important role in sperm production and overall reproductive health. Hormonal changes caused by obesity can reduce both sperm  quality and fertility. Experts say maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise a balanced diet enough sleep and stress management can support both overall health and reproductive health. Avoiding smoking limiting alcohol and managing long term medical conditions may also help improve fertility. The findings were published in the journal Human Reproduction. The study supports earlier findings from the World Health Organization, which reported in 2023 that about 17.5% of adults worldwide experience infertility at some point in their lives. The WHO also noted that infertility affects people in high middle and low income countries making it a global public health challenge. Researchers say that while infertility can have many causes keeping body fat at a healthy level may be an important step in protecting male fertility and improving reproductive health.

In the distance, the modern skyline of Qinhuangdao reflects the morning light, while the quiet rhythm of campus life unfolds with remarkable order. For an international student, these seemingly ordinary moments reveal something extraordinary: a place where centuries of cultural heritage and the ambitions of a modern nation exist in harmony. When I first arrived in China from Pakistan, I expected to encounter advanced technology, modern cities, and world-class universities. Those expectations were quickly fulfilled. What I did not anticipate was how naturally tradition and innovation would coexist in everyday life. At Yanshan University, I discovered that China’s progress is not defined by replacing its past but by building upon it. Every day offers new evidence that preserving cultural identity and embracing innovation are not opposing goals—they are complementary forces shaping the country’s future. Walking across campus, I often see students reading beneath ancient-style pavilions before entering laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology. Traditional Chinese architecture blends seamlessly with modern academic buildings, creating an environment that respects history while encouraging discovery. This balance extends beyond the university itself. Whether observing cultural festivals enthusiastically celebrated by both Chinese and international students or attending lectures on artificial intelligence, engineering, and sustainable development, I have witnessed how the values of the past continue to guide the innovations of tomorrow. The experience extends beyond the classroom. Nearby streets reflect the same remarkable balance. Local restaurants continue to prepare recipes passed down through generations, while customers pay using digital platforms within seconds. Morning markets preserve customs that have connected communities for decades, yet efficient transportation systems, smart city infrastructure, and digital services demonstrate how technological advancement has become part of everyday life. Rather than replacing tradition, innovation appears to strengthen it by making daily life more connected, accessible, and efficient. Yanshan University itself represents this philosophy. Its reputation for excellence in engineering and scientific research reflects China’s commitment to technological advancement, yet the university also places great importance on cultural exchange, community, and mutual respect. As international students, we are encouraged not only to pursue academic success but also to understand Chinese culture through festivals, volunteer activities, language learning, and interactions with local communities. These experiences transform education into something far greater than earning a degree—they become lessons in understanding different perspectives and appreciating shared human values. Living in Qinhuangdao has further deepened this understanding. The city’s coastal beauty, green parks, and historic landmarks exist alongside expanding infrastructure, modern industries, and sustainable urban development. The coexistence of natural landscapes and economic progress reflects a broader vision of development that values both environmental stewardship and long-term prosperity. As someone studying economics and business, I find this balance particularly meaningful because it demonstrates that development can be measured not only by growth but also by the quality of life it creates. Perhaps the greatest lesson I have learned is that China’s future is being built without losing sight of its cultural foundations. Respect for education, family, community, and tradition continues to shape daily life even as technology transforms industries and society. This combination has challenged many of my previous assumptions about modernization. Rather than viewing tradition and innovation as competing forces, I have come to see them as partners in creating resilient and sustainable progress. As the evening lights illuminate the campus and students gather to discuss assignments, share meals, or simply enjoy a walk with friends, Yanshan University becomes more than a place of higher learning. It becomes a meeting point where cultures, ideas, and aspirations come together. Every conversation, every shared experience, and every lesson contributes to a broader understanding that education is not confined to classrooms—it is found in the relationships we build and the perspectives we gain. For me, studying at Yanshan University has been more than an academic journey. It has been an opportunity to witness how a nation can confidently embrace the future while honoring its past. In an increasingly interconnected world, this balance offers an important lesson: true progress is achieved not by abandoning tradition, but by allowing it to inspire innovation. Here, where tradition meets tomorrow, I have found not only a university but also a deeper appreciation of China’s enduring spirit and its vision for the future.
