Lahore police decide polygraph test for ASI in all…

Lahore police have decided to conduct a polygraph test on an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in connection with allegations that a young woman was sexually assaulted at Ghaziabad police station.

According to police sources, ASI Imran, who is currently in custody, will undergo the test as investigators continue examining the allegations and conflicting accounts surrounding the incident.

Police said the alleged victim has already undergone a psychiatric assessment. The report from the assessment is expected to be received on August 18, while additional medical and forensic examinations have also been conducted.

According to the police, ASI Imran has denied the allegations. He reportedly told investigators that he had brought the woman to the police station because she was allegedly involved in begging. He claimed that he did not assault her and instead provided her with food and counselled her before sending her away.

Investigators said the initial medical report contains some ambiguity regarding the allegations of sexual assault. Police officials said a detailed report from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) is expected to provide further findings that could help investigators establish what happened.

The case is being closely monitored by DIG Investigation Lahore Zeeshan Raza, who said he is personally supervising the investigation. He assured that anyone found responsible would be punished according to the law.

Police sources said further tests of the alleged victim have also been conducted, but their results are still awaited. Investigators are expected to consider the medical evidence, forensic findings, statements and other available material before reaching conclusions about the case.

The investigation is being conducted under the direction of DIG Investigation Lahore. A team comprising Ghaziabad Investigation Incharge Inspector Nasir Hameed, Gender Cell Incharge Inspector Fatima and Investigation Officer Faryal is working on the case.

The decision to conduct a polygraph test on the detained ASI comes as investigators attempt to establish the facts surrounding the allegations. However, the reported initial medical ambiguity means that the final medical and forensic findings will be important in determining the direction of the investigation.

Authorities have said that the investigation remains ongoing and that legal action will be taken on the basis of the evidence collected.

Apple offers 15% App Store fee, pushes for Epic settlement talks

Apple is making two significant moves at once in its long-running legal battle with Epic Games. The tech giant has proposed a new commission structure while also pushing for both sides to return to the negotiating table. In a new court filing, Apple proposed capping commissions at 15% on purchases made through alternative payment systems in the US. The move follows a period during which Apple charged a 27% commission on those same transactions. That earlier rate had already landed Apple in trouble. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled it violated a prior court order requiring Apple to let developers direct users toward outside payment options. Epic Games wasted no time responding to the new proposal. The company argued the revised fees still fall far outside what the Ninth Circuit has indicated would be acceptable. The timing of Apple’s filing is notable too. It landed the same day the Supreme Court rejected Apple’s request to pause lower-court proceedings while it separately reviews Gonzalez Rogers’ contempt finding against the company. That rejection means the fee-setting process will continue moving forward in the district court. This holds true regardless of how the higher court eventually rules on the separate contempt issue. Alongside the commission proposal, Apple filed a separate motion asking the court to order both companies into a settlement conference. The session would be overseen by Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero. According to the filing, Apple had already proposed this meeting directly to Epic’s legal team on August 11. Epic, however, declined to agree to the arrangement at that time. Despite Epic’s refusal, Apple maintains the court still has the authority to compel the conference. The company points to the fact that the Ninth Circuit itself had previously invited both parties to work toward an agreement on link-out commissions. Apple believes a confidential meeting could help resolve the dispute without further extending the ongoing remand proceedings. Notably, the filing does not include any actual settlement terms, it simply requests a court order mandating the conference take place. With both sides digging in on separate fronts, the long-running dispute between Apple and Epic shows no signs of reaching a resolution anytime soon.

Supreme Court to hear suspension pleas of Imaan Ma…

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has scheduled for hearing the petitions seeking suspension of the sentences awarded to Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha in a case related to controversial social media posts. According to details, a two-member bench of the Supreme Court will hear the petitions on August 19. The bench will be headed by Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, while Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim will also be part of the bench. The petitions have been filed seeking suspension of the sentences imposed on Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha in connection with the controversial tweets case. The court has issued notices to all parties involved in the case and will hear their respective positions during the upcoming proceedings. The scheduling of the petitions before the Supreme Court marks another stage in the legal proceedings involving the two individuals. The case has attracted attention because it concerns social media posts and the legal consequences arising from content published on digital platforms. The applicants are seeking relief from the sentences imposed against them while their legal challenge proceeds before the superior court. The Supreme Court will examine the suspension requests during the hearing and consider the arguments presented by both the petitioners and the opposing parties. The two-member bench headed by Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan is expected to hear the legal arguments concerning the basis of the sentences, the circumstances surrounding the disputed social media posts and the grounds presented by the applicants for suspension of their sentences. Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim will serve as the second member of the bench. Notices have already been issued to the parties concerned, formally informing them of the hearing and providing them an opportunity to present their positions before the court. The proceedings are expected to focus specifically on the requests for suspension of the sentences rather than constituting a final determination of all aspects of the underlying case. The court may consider the legal arguments and relevant circumstances before deciding whether the sentences should be suspended. Cases involving social media content have increasingly become an important part of Pakistan’s legal landscape as courts deal with questions concerning online expression, the limits of digital communication and the application of existing laws to content published on social media platforms. The matter involving Mazari and Chattha has also drawn public attention because of the nature of the allegations and the penalties imposed in connection with the disputed posts. Their petitions before the Supreme Court represent an attempt to obtain relief from the sentences through the country’s highest court. The issuance of notices to the parties means that the respondents will have an opportunity to submit their arguments when the matter comes up for hearing. The final outcome will depend on the arguments presented before the bench and the court’s assessment of the applicable legal provisions and circumstances of the case. The hearing is scheduled for August 19, when the two-member bench will take up the suspension petitions. Any decision by the Supreme Court at that stage could have a significant impact on the immediate legal position of Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha. For now, the petitions remain pending before the Supreme Court, and the court will determine the next course of action after hearing the parties involved.

Ancient Roman shipwreck found off Sicily carrying hundreds of 2,000-year-old amphorae

Italian authorities have uncovered an ancient Roman merchant ship off the coast of Sicily, dating back to the 2nd or 1st Century BC. The vessel was discovered lying 46 metres underwater roughly three nautical miles off Mazara del Vallo. Measuring 21 metres long and 6 metres wide, the vessel’s cargo holds remain piled with hundreds of well-preserved amphorae, primarily Dressel 1A ceramic jars used during the late Roman Republic to transport commodities such as wine, olive oil, and grain. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the site as “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years”. Local fisherman and free-diver Giacomo De Mola first flagged the site after detecting an anomaly on his sonar scanner that resembled a massive reef or rock. Upon diving down to investigate, he encountered the intact cargo mound surrounded by marine life. Following De Mola’s report, specialist divers from the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Carabinieri Art Squad), working alongside the Sicilian Region’s Superintendency of the Sea, were dispatched to survey and document the seabed. Archaeologists also identified two lead anchor stocks alongside the vessel’s structure. Italian maritime authorities have implemented security measures to safeguard the wreckage from illicit looting while further documentation and cargo analysis take place.
