NA Secretariat reports Rs8.6bn savings

The National Assembly (NA) Secretariat expects significant savings from its Rs17 billion budget for the current fiscal year after implementing administrative and financial reforms over the past two years.

According to a briefing by the NA Secretariat, the reforms have already generated Rs8.6 billion in savings against a combined allocation of Rs29 billion for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 fiscal years. The secretariat also abolished 302 posts, reducing its overall workforce by nearly 20%.

A senior official said the secretariat expects further substantial savings from this year’s Rs17 billion allocation.

The reforms have also changed the appointment process. The secretariat has replaced discretionary hiring powers with service procedures based on laws and rules. Officials say the move will improve transparency and reduce political pressure on the speaker when making appointments.

The NA Secretariat’s progress comes as the federal government continues efforts to reduce the size of the civil service and control administrative spending. However, the government’s rightsizing drive has so far focused largely on gradual and limited measures.

On Monday, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting of the sub-committee on rightsizing to review progress and discuss ways to speed up the implementation of approved reforms.

According to the Finance Ministry, Waves 1 to 4 of the rightsizing exercise have largely moved forward following cabinet approval. Recommendations for Waves 5 and 6 have also been prepared and shared with relevant authorities, while work on Waves 7 and 8 is underway.

Pakistan’s water is red line, PM Shehbaz warns I…

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned that Pakistan will respond directly if India fails to change course, declaring that every drop of the country’s water is a “red line.” Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Victory Monument in Islamabad, the prime minister said Pakistan wanted peace rather than war, but its desire for peace should never be mistaken for weakness. He said the country was committed to pursuing peace with dignity while remaining prepared to protect its sovereignty and national interests. Shehbaz Sharif described the Victory Monument as a symbol of the courage, determination and professional capabilities of Pakistan’s armed forces. He said the monument also paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending the country and honoured the armed forces personnel who demonstrated exceptional bravery. The prime minister congratulated the nation on what he described as a historic victory in the May 2025 conflict and praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his leadership. He said Pakistan’s response had strengthened the country’s standing and sent a clear message that any future challenge to its sovereignty or security would be met with a stronger response. Referring to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, Shehbaz Sharif accused New Delhi of undermining regional peace. He warned that Pakistan’s water resources were a matter of national security and reiterated that the country would take direct action if India continued on its current course. The prime minister said the monument represented a milestone in Pakistan’s broader journey towards becoming a prosperous, stable and welfare-oriented state. He stressed the need to combine national defence with economic development, technological advancement and investment in human resources. Highlighting the growing importance of information technology and artificial intelligence, Shehbaz said Pakistan must prepare its younger generation for a rapidly changing global environment. He pledged that the government would provide maximum possible support for innovation, technology and skills development. On foreign policy, the prime minister said Pakistan wanted a region free from conflicts and supported resolving disputes through justice and the principles of the United Nations. He highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran and praised Field Marshal Asim Munir’s efforts towards promoting peace in the Middle East. Shehbaz also referred to the emerging trilateral defence cooperation involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, describing it as a positive development for regional stability and a message of peace for the wider Muslim world. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari jointly inaugurated the Victory Monument in Islamabad, attended by senior civil and military officials.

Government will complete constitutional term, says…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Special Assistant, Huzaifa Rehman, has dismissed speculation about political instability, insisting that the federal government will complete its constitutional term and that comments made by individual ministers do not determine the future of an administration. Speaking during a television interview, Rehman said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had already clarified his recent remarks, adding that the issue should now be considered settled. He also noted that Naqvi shares a close personal relationship with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, suggesting there was no reason to read more into the controversy. Commenting on recent political statements, Rehman said he had not expected such remarks from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. However, he described Bilawal’s comments as emotional and declined to engage in further criticism. Rehman emphasized that the PPP remains a valued coalition partner of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). At the same time, he asserted that the ruling party has enough parliamentary support to continue governing even without the PPP’s backing. He also responded to political rhetoric about the government’s future, saying that any political “countdown” would not be limited to the PML-N. According to him, the same pressure could also apply to the provincial governments in Sindh and Balochistan. Addressing another claim, Rehman said he did not agree with the suggestion that the government had achieved 30 years’ worth of progress in just three years. He maintained that performance should be judged on measurable results rather than exaggerated comparisons. The prime minister’s aide further revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed all federal ministries about a month ago to submit detailed performance reports. He said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on reviewing progress, improving governance, and ensuring accountability across ministries.

Carson Daly shuts down The Voice exit rumors with …

Carson Daly has officially put an end to speculation about his future on The Voice, assuring fans that he is not leaving the long-running singing competition after 15 years. Rumors about Daly’s departure began circulating after NBC announced a new version of the hit series, The Voice: Celebrity. The upcoming spin-off will feature actress and television personality Keke Palmer as host, leading many viewers to believe Daly was stepping away from the franchise. However, the veteran TV host quickly addressed the reports through a message shared on Instagram.  “Many today have asked if I am leaving The Voice. Nope,” Daly wrote, making it clear that he has no plans to exit the original show. The 53-year-old television personality explained that NBC is simply experimenting with two different formats. The traditional version of The Voice will continue to air during the fall, while the celebrity edition is scheduled for the spring. “We are gonna try out these two formats this fall/spring and see how it goes. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion,” Daly added in his post.  Daly also praised Keke Palmer, saying she is the perfect choice to host the celebrity spin-off. While Palmer will front the new series, Daly will continue hosting the original The Voice, a role he has held since the show’s debut in 2011. In addition, he will remain involved behind the scenes as a producer for the celebrity version.  The announcement comes as NBC looks to refresh the franchise with a new concept featuring celebrity contestants instead of aspiring singers. The celebrity edition will include actors, musicians, athletes, comedians, influencers, and other well-known personalities competing for the title, while the classic version will continue showcasing undiscovered vocal talent.  Fans were relieved after Daly’s clarification, with many taking to social media to celebrate the news. Having hosted the show for more than 30 seasons, Daly has become one of its most recognizable faces, known for guiding contestants through emotional moments and keeping the competition running smoothly. His reassurance also ends days of online speculation that suggested he was stepping away because of scheduling demands. Instead, Daly confirmed that he remains committed to the original series and is excited to see how the two-format approach performs with audiences.  For now, viewers can expect to see Carson Daly exactly where they have for the past 15 years—hosting The Voice while helping the franchise enter an exciting new chapter with its upcoming celebrity spin-off.
