Shahid Khaqan Abbasi challenges delisting of Awaam…

Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to delist the Awaam Pakistan Party.

In his letter, Abbasi expressed concern over what he described as an unjustified decision by the Election Commission to remove the party from its list of registered political parties. He said he was surprised that Awaam Pakistan had been delisted on the grounds that it had failed to conduct intra-party elections.

Abbasi rejected the allegation and maintained that the party had already conducted intra-party elections for its National General Council and national office-bearers. According to him, the elections were held between March 26 and April 2, within the deadline provided by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The former prime minister said that Awaam Pakistan fulfilled the requirements set by the electoral body and completed its intra-party election process within the prescribed period. He added that the party submitted the election results along with detailed documentation to the Election Commission on April 6.

Abbasi argued that the party had therefore complied with the Election Commission’s instructions and questioned the basis on which it was subsequently delisted.

The letter stated that a total of 12,084 members participated in Awaam Pakistan’s intra-party elections. Abbasi described the electoral process as democratic and transparent, saying that the participation of thousands of party members demonstrated the party’s commitment to democratic procedures.

He further expressed concern over what he termed the unfair and unusual manner in which an active political party had been delisted. According to Abbasi, the decision was difficult to understand, particularly because the party had conducted its intra-party elections and submitted the required documents to the Election Commission.

Abbasi also objected to the fact that the party was delisted without being given an adequate opportunity to present its position. He said that removing an active political party from the electoral list without hearing its case was beyond comprehension and raised questions about due process.

The former prime minister urged Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and the Election Commission to conduct an immediate hearing into the matter. He requested that Awaam Pakistan be provided an opportunity to explain its position and present the relevant evidence regarding the intra-party elections.

Abbasi’s letter comes amid continued debate over the legal and procedural requirements that political parties must meet to remain registered with the Election Commission. Intra-party elections are an important requirement under Pakistan’s political and electoral framework, as they are intended to ensure democratic participation and accountability within political parties.

The former prime minister maintained that Awaam Pakistan had fulfilled this requirement within the deadline and had provided the Election Commission with the necessary election results and supporting documents.

He called on the electoral body to review its decision and hear the party’s case before taking any further action. Abbasi stressed that Awaam Pakistan should be given a fair opportunity to clarify the circumstances surrounding its intra-party elections and the documents submitted to the Commission.

The controversy has placed renewed focus on the relationship between political parties and the Election Commission, particularly regarding compliance with electoral laws and the right of political parties to be heard before facing major administrative decisions.

Abbasi’s appeal now seeks an immediate hearing and a review of the delisting decision, with the party arguing that it followed the prescribed procedure and conducted its intra-party elections in a democratic and transparent manner.

According to university officials, the administration has been actively pursuing a comprehensive strategy to manage the stray dog population in collaboration with the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL). The initiative follows the directives of the Honorable Lahore High Court, which has prohibited the culling of stray dogs and instead instructed the relevant civic authorities to adopt humane measures for controlling their population. In line with the court’s orders, Punjab University has been coordinating closely with MCL to implement a systematic and lawful approach to the issue. University officials stated that several operations have already been carried out on different parts of the campus, during which MCL teams captured stray dogs and took them into custody as part of the approved animal control mechanism. The administration has also shared details of these operations to highlight the progress made so far. Officials emphasized that the campaign is not a one-time activity but an ongoing effort aimed at ensuring long-term results. The latest operation has already commenced and will continue in the coming days to further reduce the presence of stray dogs across the university premises. The administration believes that sustained operations, coupled with close coordination between the university and civic authorities, will help create a safer and more secure environment for everyone on campus. The stray dog issue has remained a concern for students and employees, with many expressing worries about safety while moving between academic departments, hostels, and other university facilities. Responding to these concerns, the university administration reiterated its commitment to resolving the matter through legal and humane means rather than adopting measures that violate court directives. University officials also urged members of the campus community to cooperate with the ongoing operations and avoid interfering with the work of MCL teams. They stressed that public cooperation is essential for the success of the campaign and encouraged anyone noticing areas with a high concentration of stray dogs to report them to the relevant university offices so that timely action can be taken. The administration further clarified that all measures being implemented are fully aligned with the directions issued by the Honorable Lahore High Court. Since culling has been prohibited, the focus remains on capturing, relocating, and managing stray dogs through the mechanisms prescribed by the competent authorities. Officials expressed optimism that the continued operations will gradually improve the situation and significantly minimize the risks associated with stray dogs on campus. They reaffirmed that the university will maintain close coordination with MCL until satisfactory and sustainable results are achieved. Punjab University has assured students, faculty members, and staff that their safety and well-being remain among the institution’s highest priorities. The administration stated that it will continue monitoring the situation, reviewing progress regularly, and taking all necessary steps within the legal framework to ensure a safe, secure, and conducive academic environment for the entire university community.

Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of Sri Lanka Tests

NEW DELHI: India have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka after star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a knee injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday. Bumrah, widely regarded as India’s pace spearhead, has not fully recovered from the left knee injury he sustained during the One-Day International series against England last month. In a statement, the BCCI said the 32-year-old remains unavailable for selection as he continues his rehabilitation. Bumrah has not bowled competitively since the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 16, where he suffered the injury.   His absence is a major setback for India, particularly with the challenging conditions expected in Sri Lanka, where Bumrah’s experience and ability to strike with the new ball have often made the difference in Test matches.   Replacing him in the 15-member squad is promising fast bowler Aquib Nabi, who receives his maiden senior international call-up after an impressive run in domestic cricket. The 29-year-old pacer from Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as one of India’s brightest bowling prospects, claiming 104 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons. He also impressed during India A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, taking six wickets in two first-class matches, performances that earned him a place in the senior squad. India, led by Shubman Gill, will play a warm-up match before the opening Test begins in Galle on August 15. The second and final Test is scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23 to 27. The series now presents a golden opportunity for Nabi to showcase his talent on the international stage, while India will hope their emerging pace attack can compensate for the absence of one of the world’s premier fast bowlers. With Bumrah sidelined and a new face joining the squad, all eyes will be on India’s bowling unit as the visitors aim to begin their Sri Lanka campaign on a winning note. India squad Shubman Gill (capt), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sai Sudharsan*, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi.

Hafiz Naeem announces nationwide strike on Septemb…

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a nationwide strike on September 3, saying he will visit different cities to persuade traders to join the party’s ongoing protest movement. Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem said the party would hold a major public gathering in Faisalabad on Friday, followed by another gathering in Lahore and then Peshawar. He said he would also meet industrialists and traders in Faisalabad to discuss their concerns and encourage them to participate in the movement. He announced that sit-ins would also begin in Quetta from the following day. Hafiz Naeem said the protests and sit-ins would continue until the government accepted the party’s demands. He added that consultations were under way over a possible call for a march towards Islamabad. The Jamaat chief said the party was not yet formally announcing a wheel-jam strike, but expressed the view that the September 3 strike could eventually turn into a complete shutdown. He strongly criticised prolonged power outages across the country and questioned who would be held responsible for the situation. He said ending load-shedding was among the key demands of the protest movement. He also demanded the withdrawal of fixed charges imposed on electricity bills and called for the immediate termination of agreements with independent power producers. Hafiz Naeem accused the government of burdening citizens with rising fuel and electricity costs. He said gas shortages had also reached alarming levels, despite consumers paying high prices for the commodity. Criticising the government’s taxation policies, he alleged that authorities were focused on collecting taxes while businesses were being pushed towards closure. He accused government officials of enjoying expensive facilities at the expense of ordinary citizens. The Jamaat chief warned that if the levy and so-called “bhatta tax” were not withdrawn, no one would be able to stop a mass public movement. He further alleged that the government had been formed through what he described as a “Form 47” mandate and claimed that the party’s protests had exposed irregularities involving diesel pricing. According to Hafiz Naeem, additional refinery charges were being imposed on locally produced diesel, further increasing the burden on consumers and businesses. He also raised questions over the deaths of 14 children in the fire at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), demanding accountability over the incident and criticising the hospital’s administration. The Jamaat chief also accused the country’s three major political parties of engaging in what he described as a political “noora kushti”, alleging that they were creating the appearance of confrontation while avoiding substantive action. Hafiz Naeem said Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its campaign until its demands were addressed and urged traders, industrialists and citizens to join the protest movement.

Gohar Rasheed shares powerful reminder about love and respect

Pakistani actor Gohar Rasheed recently shared a heartfelt message about the importance of valuing people who genuinely care for us. His post highlighted a simple yet meaningful thought: when you find someone who truly loves, respects, cares for, and supports you, such a person should not be taken for granted. The message carries significance for both married and unmarried people, as meaningful relationships are built on more than attraction or temporary emotions. Love becomes stronger when it is accompanied by respect, understanding, loyalty, affection, and sincere care. According to the shared reminder, people who offer these qualities are not always easy to find, which makes their presence in our lives especially valuable. In today’s fast-paced world, relationships can sometimes be affected by misunderstandings, unrealistic expectations, and a lack of communication. It is therefore important to recognize the efforts of those who consistently stand by us during difficult moments and celebrate our happiness during good times. The message also encourages people to look beyond material things or appearances when judging the value of a relationship. Someone who treats you with kindness, respects your feelings, listens to you, and genuinely wants the best for you can be far more valuable than someone who only stays around when things are convenient. Gohar Rasheed’s post has sparked a conversation about what truly makes a relationship worth preserving. For many, love alone may not be enough; mutual respect, trust, care, and emotional support are equally important foundations of a lasting bond. The reminder ultimately encourages people to appreciate genuine connections before they are lost. In a world where sincere relationships can be difficult to find, recognizing and nurturing people who truly value you can make all the difference.

Emergency food distribution begins in Uganda as severe drought leaves 19 dead from hunger

The Ugandan government has initiated a large-scale emergency relief operation across the eastern Karamoja region following at least nineteen hunger-related deaths caused by prolonged drought and devastating crop failures. With approximately 1.5 million residents confronting acute food shortages and rising rates of malnutrition, parliament approved a emergency funding allocation of forty-five billion Ugandan shillings to procure and distribute over nine thousand tonnes of food aid over the coming two months. Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Sam Engola personally launched the distribution efforts in Kaabong district, assuring local communities that the state would oversee the delivery to ensure no starving household is left behind. The current environmental crisis marks the most severe dry spell to strike Karamoja in recent years, with the crucial rains failing completely since the start of the planting season in April. Health facilities across the region report a surge in children suffering from severe malnutrition, forcing desperate residents to seek low-paying, grueling work in informal gold-mining operations simply to purchase basic staples like maize and beans. The disaster comes amidst significant international aid reductions, particularly following severe budget cuts from donors such as USAID, which forced organisations like the World Food Programme to scale back assistance to over one million refugees in the country. In response, Ugandan officials and civil rights advocates emphasise that while emergency food distribution provides immediate life-saving relief, the government must prioritise long-term climate resilience, drought-resistant crops, and proper water infrastructure to permanently prevent recurring starvation in the region.
