A series of traffic accidents across Karachi claimed the life of one young man and left several others injured, including multiple police officers. Authorities have taken swift action by arresting suspects, seizing vehicles involved in the incidents, and launching investigations into the causes of the crashes.

According to SHO Sohail Farooq, an 18-year-old identified as Rehman lost his life after a trailer collided with his motorcycle. Two other victims, 23-year-old Shahryar and 32-year-old Zain, sustained injuries in the accident and were immediately shifted to a hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.

Police officials confirmed that the trailer driver, identified as Zaman, was arrested shortly after the incident. The trailer and the victim’s motorcycle have been taken into police custody as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

In a separate incident near Abbas Cut on the Northern Bypass in Gulshan-e-Maymar, a Rescue 15 police officer named Khalid was injured when his motorcycle was struck by a rickshaw. SHO Muhammad Ali Niazi stated that the rickshaw driver fled the scene following the collision. Police have seized the rickshaw and launched a search operation to locate and arrest the driver.

Another traffic accident occurred near Bilawal Chowrangi in Clifton, where Special Branch Head Constable Mehboob was injured after being hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. SHO Riaz Niazi of Boat Basin Police Station confirmed that the driver was taken into custody, and the vehicle involved in the accident has been impounded for further investigation.

Additional road accidents were also reported in other parts of the city. Near Baldia No. 2 Police Checkpost, 35-year-old police officer Javed suffered injuries in a traffic collision. In another incident near Numaish Chowrangi, traffic police officer Akram was injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle, whose driver fled the scene.

The recent string of Karachi traffic accidents has once again highlighted growing concerns over road safety, reckless driving, and compliance with traffic regulations. Residents have urged authorities to strengthen enforcement measures, particularly against negligent drivers of heavy vehicles, to help prevent further tragedies. Police continue to investigate all reported incidents and have assured the public that those responsible will face legal action.

The students’ concerns are linked to the Supreme Court’s handling of a petition related to police action during a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20. The protest was held under the banner of “Chalo Sansad”. The students have raised questions about the court’s decision not to list the petition for an urgent hearing at the time. In their representation, the graduates referred to reports about a hearing held on July 22. They claimed that the lawyer representing the protesters was told not to waste the court’s time. The students also cited reports that the lawyer offered to show videos of alleged police excesses during the protest. According to the petition, the chief justice reportedly declined to watch the footage, saying he did not have time. The graduates further alleged that the lawyer was not allowed to fully explain the reasons behind the protest. They said the matter deserved greater consideration because of the allegations surrounding the police action. The students also said a separate letter had previously been sent to the chief justice. The letter reportedly requested the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the alleged police action. According to the students’ petition, more than 170 protesters were injured during the incident. They claimed that women and children were also among those injured. The graduates said their concerns were based on the principles they had been taught during their time at the law university. They argued that constitutional rights and citizens’ freedoms were central to their legal education. They said receiving degrees from a chief guest whose recent conduct they believe raises questions about the handling of allegations of police violence would be a matter of concern. The students have therefore asked the university to reconsider the invitation. They have also sought consultation with graduating students before making a final decision. They further requested a meeting with the university administration to discuss the issue. The graduates also asked the administration to respond to their concerns without delay.

    LAHORE: The Punjab Teachers Union has rejected the recent increases in salaries and pensions announced by the provincial government, describing them as inadequate in the face of rising inflation and calling for the restoration of cutbacks in employee benefits. Central President of the Punjab Teachers Union Rana Anwar-ul-Haq, along with Yasin Warraich, Rana Liaquat and other office-bearers, said the government must end what they described as discriminatory economic treatment of public-sector employees. The union leaders said inflation had reached unprecedented levels, with prices now rising almost daily, making it increasingly difficult for government employees to meet their household expenses. They termed the announced 7 per cent salary increase and 3.5 per cent pension increase insufficient, arguing that the relief did not correspond with the rapidly rising cost of living. They demanded that Punjab employees receive salary increases at par with federal government employees. They also called for the restoration of cuts affecting leave encashment, pensions and gratuity. Yasin Warraich demanded a 45 per cent Disparity Reduction Allowance for Punjab government employees, arguing that denying them such an allowance while similar measures were being considered or implemented at the federal level would amount to unfair treatment. The union representatives also criticised the provincial government for failing to address the growing gap in compensation among public-sector employees. They said Punjab employees should not be deprived of financial benefits available to workers in other parts of the country. Rana Liaquat said employees affiliated with the All Government Employees Grand Alliance (AGEGA) Punjab remained united under the leadership of Chairman Khalid Javed Sangheera and expressed full confidence in the alliance’s leadership. The teachers’ representatives said they would honour the agreement reached between the two AGEGA groups at Masjid-e-Shuhada on June 16. They further announced that the Punjab Teachers Union would fully implement the protest schedule issued under the umbrella of AGEGA. The union leaders maintained that employees would continue their struggle for equitable salaries, pensions and service benefits until their demands were addressed.

  • Lahore High Court issues landmark fair trial ruling in rent cases

    The Lahore High Court has delivered a significant judgment on ex-parte proceedings in rent disputes, setting aside the Rent Tribunal’s ex-parte order against a petitioner and laying down important legal principles to safeguard the right to a fair hearing in tenancy cases. Justice Justice Muzammil Akhtar Shabbir issued a detailed 14-page judgment, declaring that “delay in justice amounts to denial of justice, while undue haste in dispensing justice is equivalent to burying justice.” The ruling has been declared a judicial precedent for future rent litigation. The High Court held that under the relevant tenancy laws, a Rent Tribunal is legally required to allow a period of 10 days before initiating ex-parte proceedings against the opposite party. During this period, the absent party retains the legal right to appear before the tribunal and seek restoration of its right to contest the proceedings. The court further ruled that if ex-parte proceedings are initiated in violation of the prescribed legal procedure, such proceedings become unlawful, and any judgment passed on their basis is also liable to be declared void. Justice Shabbir observed that Rent Tribunals must ensure proper service of notices on the opposite party before proceeding ex-parte. The judgment noted that the Rent Tribunal in the present case had failed to follow the statutory procedure governing ex-parte proceedings under the rent law. The High Court also held that the tribunal’s decision dismissing the petitioner’s application for restoration of proceedings was contrary to law. Consequently, the court set aside the judgments of both the Rent Tribunal and the appellate court. It ordered that the matter be treated as pending before the trial court and directed the trial court to decide the case strictly on its merits within four months. The High Court further instructed that no applications seeking unnecessary adjournments by either party should be entertained, emphasising the need for the expeditious disposal of the tenancy dispute while ensuring compliance with due process and the principles of natural justice.

    Sindh assigns Rs8.5bn karachi projects to FWO

    The Sindh government has handed over four major infrastructure projects worth around Rs8.5 billion in Karachi to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), with work on three of the projects scheduled to begin on the ground in August. One of the key projects involves the construction of a flyover or interchange near the Northern Bypass on the M-9 Motorway. The Sindh Local Government Department has started the process of obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the National Highway Authority (NHA) because the project will be built over the motorway. The new interchange aims to improve traffic flow between Jinnah Avenue and Malir Cantonment Road and the routes connecting Hyderabad and Sohrab Goth Vegetable Market with Jinnah Avenue. Once completed, the facility will allow motorists to cross between both sides of the motorway without taking lengthy U-turns. Authorities have estimated the cost of this project at Rs2.3 billion. The budget also covers the rehabilitation and beautification of Jinnah Avenue, which is expected to improve the overall appearance and connectivity of the area. Another major project will see the construction of a flyover at an intersection on the M-9 near Al-Asif Square, providing a direct link to Abul Hasan Isphahani Road. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs2.1 billion, and construction is expected to formally begin in August. The flyover will facilitate traffic arriving from different directions and is expected to ease congestion at one of the city’s busy intersections. The government has also included the rehabilitation and improvement of roads along the Hawksbay corridor. The project covers an 8.5-kilometre stretch from the Y Junction to Machli Chowk, as well as the road extending from Machli Chowk towards Kaka Pir. Authorities have estimated the combined cost of these works at Rs4.162 billion, with construction also scheduled to begin in August. In addition, the Sindh government plans to launch work on another major project at the Malir Halt Underpass soon. The initiative forms part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to upgrade Karachi’s road infrastructure, improve traffic movement and address congestion at key entry and exit points across the city. The four projects, collectively worth approximately Rs8.5 billion, are expected to enhance connectivity and provide motorists with safer and more efficient routes across several important parts of Karachi.
