BTS confirms Grammy boycott after backlash over new Best Asian Pop category

BTS has officially stepped back from the upcoming Grammy Awards, following major fan backlash over a newly created category many felt singled out Asian artists instead of including them. On Wednesday, July 29, the K-pop group announced it would not be submitting its music for consideration at the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, effectively confirming a boycott of next year’s ceremony.

The announcement came through a joint statement posted across the members’ individual Instagram Stories. Jung Kook, Jimin, V, Suga, RM, Jin, and J-Hope all shared the same message, confirming that none of them would take part in the ceremony scheduled for February 7, 2027.

“We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year. We hope music can be heard and embraced for what it is, beyond region or language,” the group wrote. They added a note of thanks to their fanbase, saying, “Thank you to ARMY and everyone who continues to support us.”

The decision means BTS is walking away from a shot at what would have been their first-ever Grammy win, something the members have repeatedly named as one of their biggest career goals. Skipping the ceremony entirely puts that milestone on hold, at least for another cycle.

The move follows the Recording Academy’s June 16 announcement introducing five new award categories for the 2027 Grammys, one of which was Best Asian Pop Music Performance. While intended as a way to recognize the genre’s growing global reach, the category quickly drew criticism from BTS’s fandom. Many argued that instead of placing Asian artists on equal footing with their peers across other genres, the new category effectively boxed them into a separate lane, something fans felt ran counter to the idea of true recognition.

Critics of the category pointed out that grouping Asian pop acts together, regardless of style or sound, risks reducing diverse artists to a single regional label rather than judging their work on the same terms as everyone else in the industry. For a band that has spent years pushing for mainstream recognition without being defined solely by their nationality, the new category struck a nerve.

BTS’s decision to sit out the ceremony entirely sends a clear message about where they stand on the issue, even at the cost of a long-awaited Grammy opportunity.

Gold prices rise for third consecutive session amid softer US economic data

Gold prices advanced for a third consecutive session on Tuesday as expectations of a US interest rate hike in the coming months weakened, while investors turned their attention to the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting for indications about the future direction of monetary policy. Spot gold gained 0.2% to $4,424.28 per ounce by 0130 GMT. US gold futures for December delivery also increased 0.2%, reaching $4,480.90 per ounce. The precious metal has received support from growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve may maintain its current interest-rate stance following a series of weaker-than-expected economic indicators. The US dollar remained close to multi-month lows against a basket of major currencies, providing additional support to gold and other dollar-denominated commodities. A weaker greenback generally makes gold more affordable for buyers holding other currencies, potentially boosting demand in international markets. IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said gold’s recent advance was being supported by softer US economic data released last week. The data has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could leave borrowing costs unchanged rather than move towards another rate increase. Gold typically benefits from lower interest rates because the metal does not generate interest or dividends. When yields on interest-bearing assets decline, the opportunity cost of holding bullion becomes comparatively lower, making gold more attractive to investors. According to a recent Reuters poll of economists, most analysts expect the US central bank to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its next meeting and maintain the rate through the end of the year. Market expectations have also shifted significantly. The probability of a quarter-point rate increase in September has fallen sharply, with traders now assigning nearly a 65% probability that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged. The change followed unexpected job losses in July, softer-than-anticipated consumer price inflation and weaker retail sales data. Investors are now closely watching the release of the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes, scheduled for Wednesday. The minutes could provide further insight into policymakers’ views on inflation, employment and the timing of any potential future rate adjustments. Geopolitical developments are also contributing to demand for gold as a traditional safe-haven asset. Sycamore said bullion appeared to be regaining some of its safe-haven appeal despite higher bond yields, particularly amid renewed tensions surrounding Iran and the United States. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would move towards a “fully offensive” military posture after efforts to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict with Washington stalled. The development came as the United States ruled out extending a temporary ceasefire arrangement, adding to uncertainty in financial markets. Higher geopolitical risks can encourage investors to increase exposure to traditionally defensive assets such as gold, particularly when uncertainty surrounding economic and monetary policy is already elevated. Other precious metals also recorded mixed movements during Tuesday’s session. Spot silver climbed 0.9% to $66.40 per ounce, extending gains in the broader precious-metals market. Platinum edged 0.2% higher to $1,772.75 per ounce, while palladium moved in the opposite direction, declining 0.3% to $1,330.05 per ounce.

Search teams recover body of American climber following fatal avalanche on Broad Peak

Search and rescue teams in northern Pakistan have recovered the body of 39-year-old American mountaineer Mallory Geis following a massive avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain. The disaster struck a 10-member international expedition led by renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja at an altitude of approximately 7,000 metres in the Karakoram range. Pakistani military helicopters and ground units deployed to the site have secured the remains of three victims so far, including Geis, Omani climber Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, and Nepali guide Pur Bahadur Gurung. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that bad weather and hazardous high-altitude conditions have severely complicated ongoing search efforts for the remaining missing team members. Aerial drone footage spotted several other expedition members swept nearly 1,000 metres downhill by the slide, though ground teams have yet to reach them due to the extreme terrain. Local authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan stated that recovered victims were transported to regional medical facilities for official identification procedures, while military helicopters remain on standby for further retrieval operations as weather permits.

Oil slips as higher supplies ease market fears

Global oil prices declined on Friday as increased crude shipments through key maritime routes helped calm supply concerns, despite continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and limited progress in diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran. Brent crude futures dropped by $1.03, or 1.2%, to trade at $88 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell $1.50, or 1.8%, to $82.09 per barrel. Even with the daily decline, both international benchmarks remained on track to post monthly gains of around 20%. Market analysts said the fall in prices was mainly driven by improving oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. The increase in exports helped offset fears that the ongoing regional conflict could lead to major supply disruptions. The Strait of Hormuz normally carries nearly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. The route has remained under close watch since tensions escalated following the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. At the same time, Saudi Arabia is working with regional partners to strengthen maritime security in strategic waterways, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. These routes play a vital role in global energy transportation. According to Saudi officials, 14 countries have expressed support for the proposed multinational maritime defence initiative, aimed at improving the safety of commercial shipping in the region. Meanwhile, the security situation remains uncertain after Yemen’s Houthi movement announced a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, raising fresh concerns over the safety of Red Sea shipping lanes, which serve as an alternative route for oil exports. Although oil tankers continue to pass through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, traders say higher security risks have pushed up shipping costs and insurance premiums. These additional expenses continue to keep a geopolitical risk premium built into global oil prices.
