Maine Democrats choose Troy Jackson for crucial US Senate race

Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has officially secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate, ending the party’s search for a new candidate after Graham Platner withdrew from the race earlier this month. Jackson will now challenge long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins in what is expected to become one of the most closely watched Senate contests of the midterm elections.

The Democratic Party selected Jackson during its state convention in Bangor, where an overwhelming majority of nearly 600 delegates voted in his favor. Business executive Saundra Pelletier, who also sought the nomination, was defeated by Jackson after party members backed his campaign by a wide margin.

The nomination process was set in motion after former Democratic candidate Graham Platner stepped aside on July 10 following allegations of sexual assault. Platner has denied the accusations against him. His withdrawal forced party leaders to quickly organize a replacement ahead of the November election, making Jackson’s campaign one of the shortest Senate races of the year.

During his acceptance speech, Jackson focused heavily on economic issues, arguing that rising living costs remain the biggest challenge facing ordinary Americans. He accused large corporations and wealthy individuals of benefiting while working families continue to struggle. Jackson also criticized Senator Collins, claiming she has consistently supported policies that favor powerful business interests over everyday workers.

Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from northern Maine and a former Republican, had already built strong support within the Democratic Party before the convention. His supporters dominated the delegate selection process the previous weekend, effectively securing his path to the nomination. His campaign also announced that it had raised more than $1 million in donations within days of entering the race, providing a significant financial boost for the months ahead.

The election is expected to play an important role in determining which party controls the US Senate. Republicans currently hold a 53 to 47 majority, and Democrats view Maine as one of their strongest opportunities to gain a seat. Senator Collins has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997 and currently serves as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, a position that has allowed her to direct federal funding toward projects in her state.

Maine has become an increasingly competitive political battleground. Although voters supported Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Collins has repeatedly won statewide elections even while Democrats carried the state in presidential contests. Her victory in 2020 came by nearly nine percentage points despite Maine backing Joe Biden for president during the same election.

Recent polling suggests the race could be highly competitive. A survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire found Jackson holding a narrow lead among likely voters, although political analysts expect the contest to remain close until Election Day. Collins also enters the campaign with a significant financial advantage, having built an election fund worth approximately $11 million.

Economic concerns are expected to dominate the campaign, but immigration and social issues are also likely to receive considerable attention. Jackson has called for abolishing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement following several controversial incidents involving the agency this year. Collins, meanwhile, supported a major immigration enforcement funding package but has also called for a temporary pause in certain traffic stop operations carried out by ICE. President Donald Trump has publicly defended those enforcement measures and said they should continue.

Jackson’s political record on social issues is also expected to come under scrutiny. Although he now supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage, he opposed both earlier in his legislative career before changing his position during his second term in the Maine Senate. Those past votes became a campaign issue during his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for governor earlier this year.

Republicans have already begun attacking Jackson’s candidacy. The Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican political action committee that plans to spend at least $42 million in Maine, launched an advertising campaign highlighting a 2021 incident in which Jackson threw a water bottle during a heated debate in the state legislature. The advertisement questions his temperament and leadership style. Jackson acknowledged the incident in a recent interview, saying he regretted throwing the bottle and admitting he allowed his emotions to get the better of him during the argument.

Government allows cheaper export of costly importe…

The federal Ministry of Industries and Production has allowed the export of imported sugar at a lower price, a decision that could cause billions of rupees in losses to the national exchequer, according to ministry sources. Sources said the government has permitted the export of 100,000 tonnes of sugar. However, a decision on exporting 250,000 tonnes of cheaper locally produced sugar has not yet been taken. The sources described the decision to allow the export of only 100,000 tonnes as disappointing. They said the move could create financial losses because the sugar being exported was imported at a comparatively higher cost. The sources further warned that the decision could also affect sugarcane procurement in the country. According to them, sugar mills may face difficulties in purchasing sugarcane from farmers if the current situation persists. Sugar mill owners had already informed the Ministry of Industries and Production about the issue, sources said. They had reportedly warned the ministry that the limited export decision could make it difficult for mills to manage their stocks and purchase the upcoming sugarcane crop from farmers. The government is now facing a challenge in balancing sugar exports, domestic prices, the interests of farmers and the financial impact on the national exchequer. Sources said further decisions regarding the export of locally produced sugar are expected after reviewing the market situation and available stocks.

Muhammad Ahmed recalls being humiliated by fellow actor

Veteran Pakistani actor and writer Muhammad Ahmed has opened up about an upsetting experience in which he says he was repeatedly humiliated by a younger male actor on a drama set. Speaking on Sheeba Khan’s podcast Dareecha, the seasoned artist became emotional as he recalled the incident, saying that some actors behave very differently behind the scenes than they do in public. Muhammad Ahmed began by reflecting on how private interactions often reveal a person’s true nature. He said, “Actors show their true colours in private meetings, as I have experienced multiple times. Most recently, I remained calm when I was bullied because I know everyone has mobile phones, and they can record and post videos online with captions like, ‘See the reality of Muhammad Ahmed.’” He then explained why the remarks hurt him deeply. “I know I am bald, tanned, and short. I know this reality and often make fun of it myself, but what if you are told this by an actor who is 40 years younger than you?” He added that the actor frequently tried to attract attention by making loud comments in front of others. Recalling one such moment, Muhammad Ahmed said the actor mocked him for carrying a leather bag. “He said, ‘Oh Muhammad Ahmad, you are carrying a leather bag with you, it’s pure leather.’ He was shouting in front of everyone so that people would notice him because he was doing the lead role.” He further claimed that the actor also referred to comments Muhammad Ahmed had made years earlier about his performance. “Then he again said, ‘This man, Muhammad Ahmed, rated my acting four or five years ago and judged my future on the basis of it, whether I would survive in the industry or not,’ which is true because I had told the producer that this guy is good, and yes, that drama became a hit.” According to Muhammad Ahmed, he later reunited with the same actor on another project. Although he had expressed concerns to the producer beforehand, he was assured that the actor had changed. However, he said the behaviour continued. He recalled the actor saying, “I don’t know why people cast Muhammad Ahmed. He acts the same and has the same hairstyle.” Describing another incident, Muhammad Ahmed said the actor took a handheld fan from a female co-star, held it over his head like a hairdryer and joked, “Look, I am making his hairstyle.” He said he chose not to respond because he did not want to lower himself to that level or create unnecessary conflict on set. The veteran actor admitted that the experience left him deeply hurt. “I was humiliated, I completed my work and came home. I thought, ‘Am I that weak that I should be humiliated by an actor who joined the industry only eight years ago?’” He added that he remained silent out of respect for the producers and the rest of the team. Muhammad Ahmed concluded by saying that maintaining his composure was a conscious decision. “I didn’t say anything because the producers were so respectful. I maintained my calm because of my team. Nowadays, no one takes a stand for anyone.” His candid remarks have sparked discussion on social media, with many viewers expressing support for the veteran actor and calling for greater respect and professionalism within the entertainment industry.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu travels quietly to Washington

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington under extraordinary security measures amid growing concerns over potential threats from Iran. According to media reports, Netanyahu traveled discreetly and avoided the country’s main international airport, reflecting heightened security precautions ahead of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Reports stated that instead of departing from the usual Ben Gurion International Airport, Netanyahu left Israel aboard a special aircraft from Nevatim Air Base, a military facility in southern Israel. The unusual departure arrangements were reportedly made due to security concerns related to possible threats from Iran. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office did not announce the departure time in advance and did not issue an official explanation for the extraordinary security measures. However, Israeli media cited security sources as saying that the changes were implemented because of concerns about potential Iranian threats. According to the reports, security precautions were also tightened within Israel before Netanyahu’s departure. Sources said that Sunday’s Israeli cabinet meeting was not held at the Prime Minister’s Office, as is customary. Instead, the meeting reportedly took place at a secret underground location for security reasons. Officials did not publicly disclose the exact location or provide additional details about the decision. Media also reported another unusual step taken during the visit preparations. Unlike previous foreign trips, Israeli authorities did not allow members of the Israeli diplomatic press corps to accompany Prime Minister Netanyahu aboard the official government aircraft. No formal explanation was given for excluding journalists from the flight, although reports suggested that the decision was linked to heightened security concerns. Netanyahu has now arrived in Washington, where he is expected to hold high-level talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting is anticipated to focus on several major regional and international issues, with Iran expected to dominate the agenda. Following his departure for the United States, Netanyahu shared a statement on social media outlining the objectives of his visit. He said that his discussions with President Trump would cover a wide range of issues affecting Israel and the Middle East. According to the Israeli leader, Iran would be the top priority during the meeting because of ongoing regional tensions and security concerns. Netanyahu stated that Israel’s primary goal remains ensuring the country’s security, strengthening its national defense, and expanding what he described as the “circle of peace” around Israel. He emphasized that cooperation with the United States continues to play a vital role in addressing regional challenges and promoting stability. The visit comes at a time of continued tensions between Israel and Iran, with both countries accusing each other of actions that threaten regional security. Analysts believe that discussions between Netanyahu and President Trump are likely to include Iran’s nuclear program, regional security, military cooperation, and broader strategic relations between the United States and Israel. In his statement, Netanyahu also said that he intends to express his condolences to President Trump over the passing of Lindsey Graham whom he described as a true friend of Israel. The Washington meeting is expected to be closely watched by international observers, as its outcomes could influence future U.S.-Israel cooperation and regional diplomatic developments.
