The federal Ministry of Industries and Production has allowed the export of imported sugar at a lower price, a decision that could cause billions of rupees in losses to the national exchequer, according to ministry sources.

Sources said the government has permitted the export of 100,000 tonnes of sugar. However, a decision on exporting 250,000 tonnes of cheaper locally produced sugar has not yet been taken.

The sources described the decision to allow the export of only 100,000 tonnes as disappointing. They said the move could create financial losses because the sugar being exported was imported at a comparatively higher cost.

The sources further warned that the decision could also affect sugarcane procurement in the country. According to them, sugar mills may face difficulties in purchasing sugarcane from farmers if the current situation persists.

Sugar mill owners had already informed the Ministry of Industries and Production about the issue, sources said. They had reportedly warned the ministry that the limited export decision could make it difficult for mills to manage their stocks and purchase the upcoming sugarcane crop from farmers.

The government is now facing a challenge in balancing sugar exports, domestic prices, the interests of farmers and the financial impact on the national exchequer.

Sources said further decisions regarding the export of locally produced sugar are expected after reviewing the market situation and available stocks.

    PDMA issues high alert as heavy monsoon rains claim lives, trigger flooding across country

    Lahore: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a 24-hour high alert as torrential monsoon rains continue to batter large parts of Pakistan, resulting in loss of life, widespread flooding and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. In Punjab, at least eight people were killed and 37 others injured after roofs and walls collapsed during heavy rainfall. Four fatalities were reported in Gujranwala, while a child drowned in an underpass in Kamalia after being swept away by accumulated rainwater. Three more people lost their lives in separate roof collapse incidents in Pakpattan and Sahiwal. Torrential rains inundated streets, residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas in Sialkot, while low-lying areas of Faisalabad were submerged, major roads were flooded and traffic was severely disrupted. A woman and a young girl were also injured after the roof of a house collapsed in Faisalabad. Heavy showers were also reported in Wazirabad, Kamalia, Hafizabad, Pindi Bhattian, Bhera, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Layyah and Dera Ismail Khan, leaving roads and streets submerged. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of flash floods in hill torrents and seasonal streams, while urban flooding remains a significant concern in Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara and Sahiwal over the next 48 hours. According to official rainfall data, Gujranwala received 142 millimetres of rain, followed by Mandi Bahauddin with 133 millimetres, Narowal with 95 millimetres, Sialkot with 85 millimetres and Hafizabad with 70 millimetres. In Lahore, two people were killed and two others, including a woman and a young child, sustained injuries when the roof of a house collapsed in (Kot Babu Khan) Raiwind. The roof, reportedly constructed with wooden beams, gave way during the heavy downpour. Rainfall was also recorded across several areas of Lahore, including Lahore High Court, Kalma Chowk, Mall Road, Ring Road, Model Town, Hamdard Chowk, Gulshan Ravi and Samanabad, where the highest rainfall of 4.2 millimetres was recorded. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at least 14 people have lost their lives and 19 others have been injured in rain-related incidents. The victims include six children and two women. According to the PDMA, six houses were completely destroyed, while 22 others sustained partial damage. Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider briefed him on preparedness measures and the risks associated with the ongoing monsoon season. Authorities also reported low-level flooding in the Jhelum, Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab rivers, although water levels remain within their channels. PMD official Dr. Irfan Virk said the weather advisory issued for July 18-25 had already warned of widespread monsoon activity. He said heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next two days, particularly in Mansehra, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Chitral, Battagram, Kohistan, Peshawar, Swabi, Mardan, Kurram, Kohat, Karak and Dera Ismail Khan. Officials said the current weather system is expected to persist over central Pakistan for another two days before gradually weakening. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone areas and follow official safety advisories due to the continued risk of flooding, structural collapses and other rain-related hazards.

    MUZAFFARABAD, July 26: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) authorities have completed preparations for the first phase of the general elections, with polling scheduled to begin in the Mirpur division on Monday. AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan said all necessary arrangements had been finalised for the elections. He assured voters that the process would be conducted peacefully, transparently and fairly. Speaking at a joint press conference with Election Commission Secretary Raja Mohammad Shakeel Khan, the chief secretary said the formal election process would begin on July 27 in accordance with the Constitution. He said polling material had already been sent to returning officers and all state institutions were ready to perform their responsibilities during the elections. Around 17,000 security personnel have been deployed to maintain peace during polling. Police contingents from all four provinces will also assist AJK Police with security arrangements. Khushal warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disturb law and order or interfere with the electoral process. Authorities are also monitoring social media activity ahead of polling. The chief secretary said action would be taken against individuals involved in spreading misleading propaganda aimed at creating confusion or disrupting the elections. Election Commission Secretary Raja Mohammad Shakeel Khan said preparations for the first phase in Mirpur division had been completed. Polling material has already been delivered to the relevant polling stations. Around 22,000 election staff have been assigned duties for the voting process. Khan said election personnel had received training to ensure that polling is conducted efficiently and transparently. He said the chief election commissioner recently visited Mirpur and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements. Police, Rangers and the Federal Constabulary have also been placed on high alert. Security officials will remain deployed to protect polling stations and voters. Khan urged citizens to participate in the elections. He described voting as one of the most important democratic rights available to the public. He also warned voters about misleading material circulating online. According to him, old videos related to election boycotts were being reshared on social media to create confusion. The election official said no major untoward incident had been reported during the campaign. He added that political parties and candidates had accepted the election code of conduct. He urged voters to ignore rumours and uncertainty and cast their votes for their preferred candidates. The first phase of the AJK general elections will be held across Mirpur division on July 27. The AJK Information Department has separately urged media organisations and journalists to exercise extra caution during election coverage. It asked them to publish only verified and balanced information, particularly during polling, counting and the announcement of results. The department also warned against sharing unverified material that could create panic, confuse voters or affect public order during the sensitive election period.

    Pakistan accumulates 6.25maf water in dams as monsoon inflows surge

    Pakistan’s water reservoirs have stored more than 6.25 million acre-feet (MAF) of water during the ongoing Kharif season, bolstered by surging monsoon inflows across major national dams. An official from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) confirmed that Tarbela Dam currently holds 3.395 MAF, Mangla Dam holds 3.011 MAF, and Chashma Barrage contains 0.121 MAF. At Tarbela, inflows reached 285,700 cusecs against regulated outflows of 210,000 cusecs. Chashma Barrage recorded inflows of 263,700 cusecs and outflows of 225,000 cusecs, while Mangla Dam logged 80,500 cusecs in inflows alongside reduced outflows of 10,000 cusecs to rapidly build capacity. Due to heavy monsoon rains creating flood-like conditions at both major reservoirs, WAPDA and IRSA are managing operations cautiously to regulate inflows safely and conserve water. Downstream of Kotri Barrage, water releases were kept at a minimal 0.138 MAF between April 1 and July 21 to prevent seawater intrusion into the Indus delta, though downstream discharges are projected to increase as peak monsoon flows continue. All four provinces are currently receiving their complete indented irrigation allocations to support agricultural activities during the Kharif season. Water managers continue to monitor basin conditions closely, including at Marala Headworks on the Chenab River, where inflows rose to 102,400 cusecs with outflows kept at 80,100 cusecs following catchment rainfall. However, IRSA expressed concern over the inability to independently verify the exact origin and scale of upstream river flows, as India has suspended real-time hydrological data sharing under the Indus Waters Treaty.

    Lahore: Intermittent monsoon rains continued across Lahore after resuming late Monday night, bringing much-needed relief from intense heat and humidity. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast that the wet spell will continue throughout the day, with additional rainfall expected across Lahore and other parts of Punjab over the next 24 hours. According to the Met Office, Lahore’s minimum temperature is expected to remain around 27°C, while the maximum temperature may reach 32°C. Cloudy conditions and intermittent showers are likely to persist, contributing to cooler weather across the city. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert to district administrations across the province, directing officials to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures to minimize the risk of rain-related incidents, urban flooding, and water accumulation. Meanwhile, WASA Lahore has deployed emergency teams to ensure the timely drainage of rainwater from roads and low-lying areas. Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed, along with other officials, is personally monitoring the city’s drainage operations to prevent disruptions caused by heavy rainfall. Rainfall data recorded across Lahore showed varying intensities in different localities. Nishtar Town received the highest rainfall at 42.2 mm, followed by Lahore Airport with 30 mm. Other recorded rainfall included 20.6 mm in Johar Town, 12.6 mm at Upper Mall, 6.8 mm in Kahna, 3.4 mm on Defence Road, and 2.2 mm at the WASA Head Office in Gulberg. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during heavy rain, avoid unnecessary travel in waterlogged areas, and stay updated through official weather advisories. With more rainfall expected over the coming hours, emergency response teams remain on standby to address any weather-related emergencies. The ongoing monsoon spell is expected to continue improving weather conditions while increasing the possibility of localized flooding in low-lying areas if heavy showers persist.
