Tadej Pogačar equals record with fifth Tour de France title

Slovenian cycling star Tadej Pogačar secured his fifth Tour de France title on Sunday, equalling one of the race’s greatest records after another dominant performance across the three-week competition. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider successfully defended the famous yellow jersey, cementing his place among cycling’s all-time greats with yet another commanding victory. Pogačar entered the final stage with an unassailable overall lead, allowing him to celebrate his latest triumph after consistently outperforming his rivals throughout this year’s Tour. His victory places him alongside the legends of the sport who have won cycling’s most prestigious race five times, further strengthening his remarkable legacy at just 27 years of age. Although the general classification had already been decided, the final stage into Paris delivered plenty of excitement. Heavy rain forced organisers to modify the traditional finish, but the riders still produced an entertaining finale that thrilled spectators lining the streets of the French capital. The decisive action came on the final climb of Montmartre, where Mathieu van der Poel and Pogačar launched an attack with around 10 kilometres remaining. The pair broke clear of the peloton and worked together as a chasing group of sprinters attempted to close the gap before the finish. As the race entered its closing stages, Pogačar began to lose momentum. With less than 700 metres remaining and the chasing pack rapidly closing in, Van der Poel made his decisive move. The Dutch rider attacked alone, leaving Pogačar unable to respond as he surged towards the finish line. Van der Poel’s late acceleration proved just enough to secure the stage victory. In a dramatic sprint to the line, he held off Jasper Philipsen, his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate, by just half a wheel length in a photo finish. Denmark’s Mads Pedersen completed the podium in third place after another impressive ride. While Van der Poel celebrated the prestigious stage win, the day ultimately belonged to Pogačar. The Slovenian’s overall victory capped another exceptional Tour de France campaign in which he displayed his superiority in the mountains, time trials and key stages. His consistency throughout the race ensured that none of his challengers were able to threaten his grip on the yellow jersey. Pogačar’s latest triumph further enhances his reputation as one of the defining cyclists of his generation. Matching the historic milestone of five Tour de France victories places him among the sport’s elite, and with several years of his career still ahead of him, many believe he has the potential to set a new all-time record. As celebrations began in Paris, cycling fans around the world praised both the thrilling final stage and Pogačar’s remarkable achievement. His fifth Tour de France title marks another landmark moment in an already extraordinary career, while Van der Poel’s spectacular late attack ensured the race concluded with a memorable finish worthy of cycling’s biggest event.

Petrol, diesel prices may fall further

Petroleum product prices in Pakistan may see another reduction from August 5, offering potential relief to consumers already facing high fuel costs. According to sources within the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of petrol could decrease by Rs3.39 per litre, while high-speed diesel may become cheaper by Rs4.07 per litre. The latest calculations suggest that the price of petrol could fall to approximately Rs328.56 per litre after the proposed reduction. Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel may come down to an estimated Rs385.86 per litre. OGRA sources said the initial working for the possible price adjustment has been completed. The final decision, however, will depend on the government’s review of the latest calculations and other relevant factors before announcing the new prices. The possible reduction comes shortly after the government announced a cut in petroleum prices. In the previous adjustment, the government reduced the price of petrol by Rs4.08 per litre, while the price of diesel fell by Rs2.45 per litre. If the latest proposed cuts receive approval, consumers could see another decline in fuel prices within a short period. A reduction in petrol prices would directly benefit motorists and households that rely on private vehicles for daily commuting. Lower diesel prices could also provide some relief to the transport sector, as diesel powers a large number of commercial vehicles, buses, trucks and other heavy transport used to move people and goods across the country. A decline in fuel prices may also help reduce pressure on transportation and logistics costs. Since diesel plays a major role in the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods and essential commodities, any reduction in its price could potentially ease some of the cost burden on businesses and consumers. However, the impact of the proposed reduction on overall inflation will depend on several factors, including transportation costs, exchange rate movements and international oil prices. The government is expected to announce the final petroleum prices after completing its review and approving the new rates. The expected adjustment comes as consumers continue to closely monitor fuel prices because of their direct impact on household budgets and the cost of everyday goods and services. Any further reduction in petrol and diesel prices could provide some short-term financial relief to the public and businesses.

Japan protests as Putin visits disputed Kuril Islands

Japan issued a strong protest on Thursday following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iturup, an island within the disputed Kuril Islands chain claimed by both nations. According to Russian state media, the visit represents Putin’s first in-person trip to the archipelago. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi reiterated Tokyo’s position, stating that the islands are inherently Japanese territory under both historical context and international law. The territorial row over the four southernmost islands, which Japan refers to as the Northern Territories and Russia calls the Southern Kurils, has prevented the two countries from signing a formal World War II peace treaty. The Soviet Union seized the chain in 1945 and subsequently expelled roughly 17,000 Japanese residents. During his itinerary on Iturup, known in Japan as Etorofu, Putin inspected a local fish-processing plant and sampled regional seafood following his observation of naval drills in Russia’s Far East. The strategically located island also houses a primary Russian military air base. Bilateral relations between Moscow and Tokyo have grown increasingly strained in recent years, particularly following Japanese sanctions imposed over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Bomb disposal officer injured in explosion at DI K…

A bomb disposal officer was injured after an explosion ripped through the malkhana (evidence store) inside the Police Lines in Dera Ismail Khan on Thursday, causing significant damage to the building. According to police officials, the blast occurred inside the evidence store where confiscated explosive materials and other recovered items are kept. The force of the explosion caused part of the building’s roof and a wall to collapse. The officer in charge of the Bomb Disposal Squad sustained injuries in the incident. Rescue teams and fellow police personnel rushed to the scene and shifted him to a nearby hospital, where he received medical treatment. His condition was not immediately disclosed. Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was triggered by the accidental detonation of hand grenades stored inside the malkhana. However, officials stressed that the exact cause would only be confirmed after a thorough investigation. Following the explosion, police sealed off the affected area and launched a detailed search of the site. Investigators and forensic teams began collecting evidence to determine how the stored explosives detonated. Senior police officials also visited the Police Lines to inspect the damaged building and review the initial findings of the investigation. Authorities said all possible angles are being examined, including the handling, storage and condition of the explosive material kept in the evidence store. Police added that a comprehensive inquiry has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the blast and to determine whether any negligence or procedural lapse contributed to the incident.

Fiza Ali criticises Nimra Khan’s ex-husband over divorce comments

Pakistani actress Fiza Ali has spoken out about the recent divorce involving actress Nimra Khan and her former husband, urging people to maintain respect and dignity even when a marriage comes to an end. Nimra Khan recently entered into her second marriage and shared pictures from the wedding celebrations with her new family on social media. However, the relationship reportedly faced difficulties soon after the marriage, with both sides eventually sharing posts on social media that fueled speculation about problems between them. The situation attracted further attention after Nimra Khan’s husband shared a social media message using the phrase “good riddance,” which many users interpreted as a sign that the couple had separated. He later expressed his best wishes for Nimra and confirmed that the marriage had ended. Fiza Ali has now reacted to his post and criticised the way the end of the relationship was presented publicly. The actress stressed that a man should continue to treat a woman with respect, even after their marriage has ended. According to Fiza, if someone feels relieved after getting divorced, it also raises questions about what was happening in their life before the separation. She suggested that the end of a marriage should not become an opportunity to publicly humiliate or disrespect the former partner. The actress also emphasised that a woman deserves respect even when she is no longer part of a man’s life. She pointed out that people eventually move forward, rebuild their lives and find happiness after difficult experiences. Fiza strongly objected to portraying divorce as a victory. She said that ending a relationship should not be treated as if someone has won a competition or received a trophy. In her view, a marriage may have ended, but that does not mean the dignity or worth of the woman involved has ended with it. Addressing Nimra directly, Fiza encouraged her to remain confident and hold her head high despite the breakdown of her marriage. She stressed that the end of a relationship does not reduce a woman’s value or importance. Her comments have sparked discussion on social media, with many people debating whether former spouses should publicly discuss their relationships after divorce. Fiza’s message, however, focused primarily on the importance of maintaining basic respect and avoiding language that could further hurt someone during an already difficult period. The actress’ remarks highlight a broader conversation about how celebrities and public figures handle personal relationships in the age of social media, where private disputes can quickly become public controversies.
