Lahore: Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs, Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, visited the Head Office of the Rural Community Development Programme (RCDP), where he was warmly received by Muhammad Murtaza, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of RCDP and Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Microfinance Network.

During the visit, the Minister held a comprehensive meeting with representatives of the microfinance sector to discuss strategies for promoting financial inclusion, with particular focus on the economic empowerment of religious minorities, women, and other marginalized communities.

Addressing the meeting, Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora emphasized that financial inclusion is a powerful instrument for reducing inequality, empowering vulnerable segments of society, and creating equal opportunities for sustainable economic growth. He stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Government of Punjab is committed to ensuring inclusive development and equal economic opportunities for every citizen without discrimination.

The Minister underscored the importance of expanding access to affordable and inclusive financial services for religious minorities, women, and low-income households, enabling them to become financially independent and active contributors to the province’s socio-economic development.

Participants also discussed the role of microfinance institutions in advancing human rights and strengthening financial resilience among underserved communities. Both sides agreed to enhance collaboration to make microfinance initiatives more effective and accessible across Punjab.

Representatives of the Pakistan Microfinance Network reaffirmed their commitment to expanding comprehensive financial services through the Network’s platform, while the Rural Community Development Programme (RCDP) pledged its continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting the financial independence and economic well-being of minorities and women.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening partnerships and undertaking joint initiatives to promote financial inclusion, social protection, and sustainable economic opportunities for vulnerable and marginalized communities throughout Punjab.

    Petrol, diesel prices may fall further

    Petroleum product prices in Pakistan may see another reduction from August 5, offering potential relief to consumers already facing high fuel costs. According to sources within the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of petrol could decrease by Rs3.39 per litre, while high-speed diesel may become cheaper by Rs4.07 per litre. The latest calculations suggest that the price of petrol could fall to approximately Rs328.56 per litre after the proposed reduction. Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel may come down to an estimated Rs385.86 per litre. OGRA sources said the initial working for the possible price adjustment has been completed. The final decision, however, will depend on the government’s review of the latest calculations and other relevant factors before announcing the new prices. The possible reduction comes shortly after the government announced a cut in petroleum prices. In the previous adjustment, the government reduced the price of petrol by Rs4.08 per litre, while the price of diesel fell by Rs2.45 per litre. If the latest proposed cuts receive approval, consumers could see another decline in fuel prices within a short period. A reduction in petrol prices would directly benefit motorists and households that rely on private vehicles for daily commuting. Lower diesel prices could also provide some relief to the transport sector, as diesel powers a large number of commercial vehicles, buses, trucks and other heavy transport used to move people and goods across the country. A decline in fuel prices may also help reduce pressure on transportation and logistics costs. Since diesel plays a major role in the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods and essential commodities, any reduction in its price could potentially ease some of the cost burden on businesses and consumers. However, the impact of the proposed reduction on overall inflation will depend on several factors, including transportation costs, exchange rate movements and international oil prices. The government is expected to announce the final petroleum prices after completing its review and approving the new rates. The expected adjustment comes as consumers continue to closely monitor fuel prices because of their direct impact on household budgets and the cost of everyday goods and services. Any further reduction in petrol and diesel prices could provide some short-term financial relief to the public and businesses.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returned to Pakistan on Saturday after completing a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he held important engagements and participated in discussions focused on regional security and bilateral cooperation. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz departed Madinah after concluding his visit to the Kingdom. Madinah Governor Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was present at the airport to bid farewell to the prime minister and the Pakistani delegation. During his stay in Madinah, Prime Minister Shehbaz visited Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and offered prayers alongside members of his delegation. He also performed prayers at Riyaz-ul-Jannah and prayed for the progress, prosperity and well-being of Pakistan and its people. The prime minister was also given the opportunity to visit the Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH) at the Prophet’s Mosque. Shehbaz was accompanied during the visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. Earlier, the prime minister travelled to Makkah, where he performed Umrah along with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir. The visit was undertaken at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. A major outcome of the trip was the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. The agreement aims to strengthen defence coordination, collective security and regional stability among the three countries. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the signatories will be considered an attack against all three, establishing a framework for collective deterrence. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening strategic and defence cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye amid growing security challenges in the region.

The Soviet Union seized the chain in 1945 and subsequently expelled roughly 17,000 Japanese residents. During his itinerary on Iturup, known in Japan as Etorofu, Putin inspected a local fish-processing plant and sampled regional seafood following his observation of naval drills in Russia’s Far East. The strategically located island also houses a primary Russian military air base. Bilateral relations between Moscow and Tokyo have grown increasingly strained in recent years, particularly following Japanese sanctions imposed over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

    A bomb disposal officer was injured after an explosion ripped through the malkhana (evidence store) inside the Police Lines in Dera Ismail Khan on Thursday, causing significant damage to the building. According to police officials, the blast occurred inside the evidence store where confiscated explosive materials and other recovered items are kept. The force of the explosion caused part of the building’s roof and a wall to collapse. The officer in charge of the Bomb Disposal Squad sustained injuries in the incident. Rescue teams and fellow police personnel rushed to the scene and shifted him to a nearby hospital, where he received medical treatment. His condition was not immediately disclosed. Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was triggered by the accidental detonation of hand grenades stored inside the malkhana. However, officials stressed that the exact cause would only be confirmed after a thorough investigation. Following the explosion, police sealed off the affected area and launched a detailed search of the site. Investigators and forensic teams began collecting evidence to determine how the stored explosives detonated. Senior police officials also visited the Police Lines to inspect the damaged building and review the initial findings of the investigation. Authorities said all possible angles are being examined, including the handling, storage and condition of the explosive material kept in the evidence store. Police added that a comprehensive inquiry has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the blast and to determine whether any negligence or procedural lapse contributed to the incident.
