Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returned to Pakistan on Saturday after completing a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he held important engagements and participated in discussions focused on regional security and bilateral cooperation.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz departed Madinah after concluding his visit to the Kingdom. Madinah Governor Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was present at the airport to bid farewell to the prime minister and the Pakistani delegation.

During his stay in Madinah, Prime Minister Shehbaz visited Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and offered prayers alongside members of his delegation. He also performed prayers at Riyaz-ul-Jannah and prayed for the progress, prosperity and well-being of Pakistan and its people.

The prime minister was also given the opportunity to visit the Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH) at the Prophet’s Mosque.

Shehbaz was accompanied during the visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.

Earlier, the prime minister travelled to Makkah, where he performed Umrah along with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The visit was undertaken at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. A major outcome of the trip was the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

The agreement aims to strengthen defence coordination, collective security and regional stability among the three countries. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the signatories will be considered an attack against all three, establishing a framework for collective deterrence.

The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening strategic and defence cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye amid growing security challenges in the region.

      RAWALPINDI: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced a series of initiatives to improve education facilities and equip students in Attock with modern skills and technology. Speaking at a ceremony in Attock, where he distributed certificates and laptops among high-achieving students, the minister said the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, was working to build a modern education system and expand access to higher education for students from low- and middle-income families. Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that the government would upgrade IT laboratories in 110 schools across Attock at a cost of Rs300 million. The upgraded facilities will offer training in artificial intelligence, freelancing, data analysis, robotics and other emerging fields. He said the government would also modernise IT laboratories in Attock’s colleges. According to the minister, the number of computers available to students has improved considerably, with the government aiming to provide one computer for every 10 students. The minister said Punjab had allocated Rs750 billion for the education sector to improve institutions and provide students with better facilities. He added that the Learn and Earn programme would help Attock students develop practical skills and pursue education alongside employment opportunities. Rana Sikandar Hayat also announced two new university campuses in Attock, five Pink Buses for girls’ colleges and a study tour to Türkiye for students accompanied by teachers. In addition, 10 top-performing teachers from the district will be sent to Saudi Arabia for Umrah. Highlighting the government’s focus on girls’ education, the minister said more than 50,000 female students across Punjab were studying IT at the matriculation level. He also highlighted initiatives involving solar panels, rainwater conservation and improved technology facilities in schools. The minister said the Education Department was focusing on merit, transparency and performance while taking action against corruption and bribery. He added that more than 100,000 students had benefited from the Honhaar Scholarship Programme. The ceremony was attended by MNA Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, MPA Malik Itibar Khan, Deputy Commissioner Attock Dr Mudassar Ahmed Shah, DPO Attock Captain (Retd.) Ali Bin Tariq, former provincial sports minister Jahangir Khanزادہ, Chairman WASA Punjab Chaudhry Sher Ali, education officials, teachers and students.     English football will implement a trial this season aimed at eradicating the increasingly common practice of goalkeepers feigning injury to secure tactical timeouts, with teams required to temporarily remove an outfield player if their keeper receives treatment . The Football Association, Premier League, English Football League, National League, and Women’s Super League have agreed on the measure, with permission granted by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) . The first game to feature the trial will be the Carabao Cup preliminary round tie between Tranmere and Rochdale on Saturday . Under the new protocol, if a referee signals for a physio to treat a goalkeeper, the team’s coach will have 10 seconds to nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for one minute after play restarts, informing the fourth official of their choice . If no player is selected within 10 seconds, the captain must leave the field . The tactic of goalkeepers going down for treatment allowing coaches to deliver instructions to outfield players gathered on the touchline has become increasingly controversial in recent seasons . Leeds United fans regularly booed opposing goalkeepers for such delays last season, and the practice has been used to disrupt momentum when opponents are on top . Pro Ref, led by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, had been in discussions with the leagues to address the issue . English football opted for this trial because it follows the logic already applied to outfield players, who must leave the field for one minute if the physio comes on . The measure is intended as a proactive deterrent rather than a reactive punishment . There are several exemptions: no player will have to leave if the goalkeeper says they do not need treatment and have not stopped play, if the goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided, if the goalkeeper is fouled and needs immediate treatment, if the goalkeeper is bleeding, or if there is a serious injury requiring substitution or concussion . Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy had previously suggested this exact solution, saying: “If a keeper goes down injured, instead of him having to go off, one of the outfield players should go off then it’s fair all round. It’s a little change that makes a world of difference.” The Australian A-League will trial a variation where the captain must always leave the field . The results of the trials will be assessed by IFAB throughout the season, potentially leading to a permanent global law change from the 2027-28 season .

    LONDON: Gold prices rose on Wednesday as investors reduced expectations of tighter US monetary policy and turned their attention to upcoming inflation data that could influence the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. Spot gold gained 0.6 per cent to $4,391.82 an ounce by 0535 GMT, while US gold futures for December delivery advanced 0.2pc to $4,451.90. The precious metal had reached a 10-week high a day earlier before encountering technical resistance around $4,387, near its 100-day moving average. It subsequently closed lower for the second time this month. Market analyst Kelvin Wong of Oanda said the recent strength in gold was largely driven by changing expectations about Federal Reserve policy. He noted that prices had also gained momentum after breaking above the $4,200 level late last week. Gold recorded its strongest weekly gain since January on Friday after weaker-than-expected US employment figures prompted traders to reduce their expectations of further interest-rate increases. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets are now assigning roughly a 50 per cent probability to a rate hike in September, down from about 60pc before the jobs report. Lower interest rates generally benefit gold because the metal does not generate interest, making it relatively more attractive when yields decline. Investors were awaiting the latest US Consumer Price Index figures later on Wednesday for further clues about the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee has meanwhile said inflation remains a greater concern for him than weakness in the labour market. Oil prices also extended their gains after the United States and Houthi forces reported separate attacks involving shipping on Tuesday. Meanwhile, hopes of an end to the Iran conflict appeared to weaken after Tehran indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless certain conditions were met.
