Six candidates prepare for first televised debate in UN leadership race

The six candidates competing to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations are set to take part in a televised debate ahead of the official selection process, offering diplomats, UN staff, and the public a chance to hear their plans for leading the organisation through one of the most challenging periods in its history.

The debate will be held in the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York and comes just one week before the Security Council begins formally considering candidates to succeed Secretary General Antonio Guterres, whose term ends later this year. The 90 minute event will feature questions from diplomats, United Nations employees, and representatives of civil society, and will be broadcast live.

The six candidates are former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Argentine diplomat Rafael Grossi, Costa Rican economist Rebeca Grynspan, Guyanese Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett, and former Senegalese President Macky Sall. Each is seeking to lead the global organisation at a time when it faces financial pressures, political divisions, and increasing criticism from member states.

General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock said the debate provides a valuable opportunity for the candidates to present their leadership vision and priorities before the selection process begins. She stressed that the next Secretary General must not only improve the efficiency of the United Nations but also defend the principles of the UN Charter, including peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.

The organisation is currently facing one of its most difficult periods in recent years. The administration of US President Donald Trump has criticised the United Nations for what it describes as excessive spending, expanding beyond its core responsibilities, and failing to produce effective results. Washington has called for the organisation to focus more closely on maintaining international peace and security, while many other member states argue that protecting human rights and promoting development remain equally important responsibilities.

Over recent weeks, each candidate has already answered several hours of questions from representatives of the UN’s 193 member states. During those discussions, most pledged to continue reform efforts aimed at making the organisation more efficient, transparent, and responsive to global challenges. Many also emphasised the need for a more active diplomatic role for the Secretary General in preventing conflicts and supporting peace negotiations.

The formal selection process begins on July 30 when the 15 members of the UN Security Council hold their first confidential straw poll. During these informal votes, council members anonymously indicate their preferred candidates. Several rounds of voting may take place until one candidate secures the required support of at least nine council members without being vetoed by any of the five permanent members, namely the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France.

Once the Security Council agrees on a candidate, the recommendation will be sent to the General Assembly for final approval. The successful candidate will officially begin serving as Secretary General on January 1, 2027.

Diplomats say the race remains highly competitive with no clear favourite. Rafael Grossi is widely viewed as one of the strongest contenders because of his international profile and experience leading the International Atomic Energy Agency. However, several diplomats believe Rebeca Grynspan and Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett also enjoy significant support among member states.

Speculation continues over whether another candidate could still emerge before the final decision is made. Reports have also mentioned the name of FIFA President Gianni Infantino as a possible outsider, although he is not among the officially declared candidates.

This year’s contest has also renewed calls for the United Nations to appoint its first female Secretary General. Many member states argue that after eight decades of male leadership, the organisation should choose a woman for its highest office. Latin American countries are also pressing their case under the informal tradition of rotating the position among different world regions, making the current race one of the most closely watched leadership contests in recent UN history.

During the talks, he warned that any attack on Iran would have serious consequences for regional peace and stability. Araqchi also stressed that Iran would respond proportionately if the United States, Israel or any regional country participated in military action against Iranian territory. The discussions focused on preventing further escalation and encouraging diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider conflict. Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also held talks with President Trump to seek clarification on Washington’s plans regarding Iran. Although officials confirmed that the conversation took place, no further details were released. Iranian media affiliated with the country’s security establishment warned that attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure could result in retaliatory strikes against oil and gas facilities across the Gulf region. The warning has heightened concerns among energy producers and international markets. President Trump acknowledged that negotiations remain difficult and admitted that his confidence in reaching an agreement has weakened. However, he said his administration continues to pursue diplomatic engagement before considering further military action. Senior US officials remain involved in efforts to secure a negotiated settlement. The conflict has already had a significant impact on global energy markets. Fighting between US, Israeli and Iranian forces has disrupted regional stability and increased uncertainty over international oil supplies. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes for crude oil exports. Continued security threats have reduced commercial shipping through the passage, raising concerns over global energy supplies and increasing pressure on oil prices. Analysts say prolonged instability in the Gulf could further affect international markets if diplomatic efforts fail. Rising oil prices have already placed additional economic pressure on many countries dependent on imported energy. Regional security concerns have also expanded beyond the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime authorities reported separate incidents involving commercial vessels near Oman, including damage to a tanker after it was struck by an unidentified projectile. Another vessel reported a nearby explosion but escaped without damage.

    Delhi court orders removal of objectionable content about Tabu

    NEW DELHI: Bollywood actress Tabu has received relief from the Delhi High Court in a personality rights case, with the court directing several websites and online platforms to remove content deemed objectionable by the actress. According to Indian media reports, Tabu had approached the court, arguing that the material available on various websites and digital platforms violated her personality rights and was defamatory and obscene. Justice Jyoti Singh, while hearing the petition represented by senior advocate Swati Sukumar, directed multiple social media platforms, e-commerce listings and websites to remove the allegedly objectionable content. Various scenes from Tabu’s films were also discussed during the hearing. Tabu’s lawyer told the court that certain video clips were being promoted using search terms that portrayed the actress in an inappropriate manner. Some scenes, the lawyer said, had been slowed down or given altered titles to create a sexualised impression. Sukumar argued that the repeated appearance of such material through new accounts and posts made the issue more serious than an ordinary copyright or content infringement dispute. During the hearing, counsel representing an online platform referred to another personality rights case being heard by the court on the same day. The lawyer suggested that personality rights proceedings could sometimes be used to seek removal of allegedly defamatory material. The court observed that the legal questions raised in Tabu’s case could have wider implications beyond the present matter. Justice Jyoti Singh said that highly harmful material may require a mechanism capable of preventing such content from appearing online in the first place. The court also examined the safeguards currently used by online platforms, including automated content detection systems, in-app complaint mechanisms and grievance redressal procedures under the Information Technology Rules. Justice Singh observed that the key challenge was not simply the formulation or implementation of policy, but the creation of an effective system capable of preventing objectionable material from being uploaded at the initial stage. The court said an amicus curiae would be appointed to assist it in examining the broader legal questions involved in the case. The proceedings will also identify related legal issues that may require detailed consideration at a later stage. The court further indicated that it would consider developing a standard operating procedure (SOP) for dealing with similar cases involving harmful or objectionable online content.

    Pakistan’s debt growth falls to 20-year low: Fin…

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Finance Ministry has reported a significant slowdown in the country’s debt growth, saying the rate of increase fell to its lowest level in two decades during fiscal year 2025-26. According to the ministry, Pakistan’s debt increased by only 7.7 per cent during 2025-26, compared with an average annual growth rate of around 16 per cent over the past 20 years. The ministry said the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio also improved, falling to 68.3 per cent from 75 per cent in fiscal year 2022-23. Between 2019 and 2021, the ratio had remained between 86 and 88 per cent. Pakistan’s external debt-to-GDP ratio also declined to 21.5 per cent, which the ministry described as the lowest level in nine years. The country’s foreign exchange reserves have meanwhile increased substantially, rising from $2.9 billion to $18.4 billion, according to the ministry. The Finance Ministry said Pakistan also repaid Rs4.72 trillion in debt ahead of schedule. It added that annual interest expenditure on government debt declined by nearly Rs2 trillion. The burden of interest payments on government revenue also fell sharply, from 61 per cent to 35 per cent, indicating an improvement in the government’s fiscal position. The ministry further said Pakistan has recorded a primary budget surplus for three consecutive years, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen fiscal management and control expenditure. Pakistan has also returned to international capital markets after a four-year gap. The country’s Panda Bond reportedly attracted demand nearly five times higher than the amount offered, indicating strong investor interest. The ministry also highlighted Pakistan’s improved credit outlook. S&P Global Ratings has maintained Pakistan’s rating at B with a stable outlook, with the ministry describing the current rating as the agency’s highest level for Pakistan in nearly nine years.

    Girls dominate Hyderabad Board Class X results

    HYDERABAD: Female students have secured several top positions in the Class X annual examinations conducted by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hyderabad, with the results being announced after a delay of nearly one month. The results for both Science and General groups were released late Thursday, providing students with the long-awaited outcome of their examinations. In the Science Group, Sarah, daughter of Nisar Ahmed, from Foundation Grammar High School, Tando Allahyar, claimed the top position by securing 991 marks. Aswad Amir of Government High School No 1, Matli, stood second with 986 marks, while Mukarrama Abid of St Mary’s Convent Girls Higher Secondary School, Hyderabad, secured third position with 982 marks. A total of 78,935 candidates had registered for the Science Group examinations. Of these, 77,703 students appeared. Among the candidates who took the examination, 10,799 achieved A1 grade, while 40,769 secured A grade. Another 17,248 students obtained B grade, 3,816 received C grade and 239 were placed in D grade. The board declared 4,781 candidates unsuccessful. Results of 32 students were withheld because of reported use of unfair means and other reasons. The General Group also produced strong performances by female students. Wajihullah Khan of Deaf Reach Higher Secondary School secured first position with 873 marks. Habiba from Government Girls High School, Latifabad Unit No 6, Hyderabad, secured second position with 865 marks. Her schoolmate Halima stood third with 861 marks. The General Group had 1,570 registered candidates, of whom 1,488 appeared in the examinations. Three candidates achieved A1 grade, while 332 obtained A grade. A total of 808 students secured B grade, 227 received C grade and 18 were placed in D grade.
