More than 20,000 evacuated as wildfires sweep south-west France

More than 20,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and holiday campsites as fast moving wildfires continue to spread across south western France. Emergency officials said the fires have already destroyed thousands of hectares of land in the Gironde region near the Bay of Arcachon, while firefighters are battling difficult weather conditions that are expected to worsen the situation.

Gironde Prefect Sophie Brocas said around 12,000 people were evacuated overnight, with another 8,800 residents and visitors later ordered to leave as a precaution. Many of those affected were tourists staying at campsites on the Lège Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular summer destination along France’s Atlantic coast.

Authorities said the evacuations were carried out in an orderly manner and no injuries had been reported. Roads and forest areas considered at high risk have been closed to protect the public while emergency crews continue to fight the flames.

According to local officials, the fire has already burned around 2,400 hectares of land. Firefighters worked throughout the night to stop the blaze from spreading, but rising temperatures and stronger winds are making the operation increasingly difficult.

Gironde fire service chief Marc Vermeulen warned that changing wind conditions could make the fire unpredictable during the evening, requiring crews to remain on constant alert. Hundreds of firefighters, supported by emergency vehicles and aircraft, are continuing efforts to contain the flames before they threaten more communities.

The latest wildfire comes only days after two firefighters lost their lives while battling another blaze near Bordeaux Airport. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez paid tribute to the victims, thanking them for their service and expressing support for their families during a difficult time.

Residents described scenes of thick smoke, falling ash, and darkened skies as the fire approached their communities. Yassmina de Freitas, who lives in the coastal town of Le Porge, said smoke began filling the air during the afternoon before ash and pieces of burned tree bark started falling around her neighbourhood. By evening, police ordered her family to evacuate to a temporary shelter in a nearby town.

She said the family had to leave behind two cats and four chickens because they could not find them before leaving. Throughout the night she followed updates on the fire, watching the number of burned hectares continue to increase.

Tourists staying in the area have also been affected. Some visitors chose to leave campsites before official evacuation orders were issued, while others waited for instructions from emergency services. Holidaymakers reported unusually quiet roads and businesses as thousands of people left the peninsula.

The wildfire in Gironde is part of a wider wave of fires affecting southern Europe. In southeastern France, residents who had earlier been evacuated from parts of the Var region were allowed to return home to assess damage, although officials warned that strong winds could cause fires to restart.

Italy and Spain are also struggling with severe wildfires. In Sicily, a firefighter died while responding to a blaze and another was injured. Authorities reported more than 350 fires across the island, including several major incidents that forced precautionary evacuations. Officials believe many of the fires were caused by human activity.

In Spain, residents have started returning to their homes after a large wildfire near Toledo burned nearly 900 hectares of land. Emergency crews are still working to fully contain the blaze. Earlier this week, Spain also experienced its largest wildfire of the year in the Guadalajara region, where more than 35,000 hectares were destroyed before firefighters gained control.

Scientists have linked the growing number of extreme wildfires across Europe to increasingly frequent heatwaves and prolonged periods of dry weather. Climate experts say Europe is warming faster than any other continent, creating conditions that allow fires to spread more rapidly and become more destructive. Emergency authorities across southern Europe remain on high alert as high temperatures continue and weather conditions increase the risk of new wildfires.

Global oil prices drop 12% in three days, Pakistan…

Pakistani consumers have yet to benefit from a sharp decline in global oil prices, despite international petroleum markets recording a fall of up to 12% over the past three days. The continued high fuel prices have added to the financial burden on households already struggling with rising inflation. Over the last 12 days, fuel prices in Pakistan have increased significantly, with diesel becoming Rs. 65.08 per litre more expensive and petrol rising by Rs. 25.10 per litre. The increases followed the federal government’s decision on July 17 to introduce a daily fuel price adjustment mechanism in line with international market trends. On July 17, petrol was priced at Rs. 310.71 per litre, while high-speed diesel was available at Rs. 323.30 per litre. As of July 29, petrol is being sold at Rs. 335.81 per litre, whereas diesel has climbed to Rs. 388.38 per litre, marking one of the steepest short-term increases in recent years. Although consumers witnessed two minor reductions in petrol prices during this period, the relief was limited. Petrol prices were cut by Rs. 0.35 per litre on July 21 and by Rs. 1.00 per litre on July 27. Diesel prices, however, have not been reduced since the daily pricing mechanism came into effect. International oil markets experienced a sustained upward trend after July 17, contributing to higher domestic fuel prices. However, between July 25 and July 28, global petroleum prices fell sharply, with reports indicating a decline of approximately 12% across major international benchmarks. Despite this significant drop in global prices, Pakistani consumers have not yet received any corresponding reduction at the pump. The absence of immediate relief has sparked concerns among motorists and businesses, particularly those heavily dependent on transportation and logistics, where fuel costs directly affect operating expenses. Economists note that lower international oil prices, if sustained, could create room for a reduction in domestic fuel prices in the coming days. Any adjustment, however, will depend on several factors, including exchange rate movements, government taxes and levies, freight costs, and the pricing formula adopted by the authorities. With inflation continuing to squeeze household budgets, many consumers are hoping the recent decline in global oil prices will soon translate into lower petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan, easing transportation costs and reducing pressure on the overall cost of living.

Trump hosts Netanyahu, Zelensky for high level tal…

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Tuesday, as the wars involving Iran and Ukraine enter what officials describe as a decisive and highly sensitive phase. The two leaders are in Washington to attend a memorial service for Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican ally of Trump and a strong advocate of military support for Ukraine. However, the diplomatic spotlight has shifted to their separate meetings with the US president, which are expected to focus on two of the world’s most volatile conflicts. Trump’s relationship with Zelensky has improved significantly in recent months as Ukrainian forces have slowed Russian advances and intensified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Ahead of his meeting, Zelensky said strengthening anti-ballistic missile defence and expanding strategic cooperation with the United States were his top priorities, stressing that efforts to bring peace closer must continue. Despite renewed diplomatic contacts, there is little indication that either the Ukraine war or the widening confrontation involving Iran is nearing an end. Following the collapse of a ceasefire linked to the Iran conflict, Trump has said he paused US airstrikes to allow diplomacy another opportunity, while continuing consultations with regional allies. Netanyahu arrives in Washington amid signs of growing frustration within theWhite House over the lack of progress toward a broader settlement related to Iran. Tensions between Trump and the Israeli leader have become more visible in recent weeks, including reports of a heated phone conversation in June that was later publicly acknowledged by Trump. According to sources familiar with the discussions, Netanyahu is also seeking to reinforce his political standing ahead of Israel’s October 27 election. A public display of close coordination with Trump could help him domestically, where he has faced pressure in opinion polls. Before departing for Washington, Netanyahu said the talks would focus primarily on Iran, while also addressing regional security and efforts to expand peace agreements with Arab states. A White House official said Trump plans to discuss the Iran conflict, tensions between Israel and Lebanon, and the future of the Abraham Accords. The administration is reportedly continuing efforts to encourage Saudi Arabia to join the accords, although Riyadh has maintained that any normalisation with Israel would require a credible pathway toward Palestinian statehood. Trump struck a notably warmer tone when speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, describing Netanyahu as a strong wartime leader and saying the two had worked well together.Zelensky is expected to hold a brief private meeting with Trump, likely without media present. Ukrainian officials say securing additional Patriot missile interceptors is their most urgent request, as Russian missile and drone attacks continue almost daily. The Ukrainian president is also expected to push for expanded air-defence cooperation, progress on a drone agreement with the United States, and discussions on Trump’s proposal to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptors under licence. White House officials said the meeting with Zelensky would focus on the ongoing peace process between Russia and Ukraine and reiterated that the administration believes the time has come to seek an end to the war. After the White House talks, Zelensky is expected to visit Capitol Hill for meetings with all 100 US senators, underscoring the continuing bipartisan interest in Ukraine’s defence despite growing debate over the pace and delivery of American military assistance.

PTI founder strong, reads the Quran and its transl…

ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan, the sister of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has said that her brother remains mentally and physically strong despite being in prison. Speaking to the media outside the Islamabad High Court on Thursday, she stated that the PTI founder continues to spend his time reading the Holy Quran along with its translation, describing this as a source of strength and resilience during his incarceration. Aleema Khan also raised concerns about her brother’s health, claiming that he has been experiencing vision problems for several months. According to her, the PTI founder informed his lawyer, Salman Safdar, back in December that he was having difficulty seeing and that there was an issue with one of his eyes. She suggested that despite bringing the matter to the attention of his legal counsel, adequate medical attention had not been provided. Speaking further about his conditions in custody, Aleema Khan alleged that the PTI founder’s access to reading material has been restricted. She claimed that prison authorities had confiscated his books, preventing him from continuing his regular reading routine. According to her, books have always been an important part of his daily life, and taking them away has made his time in prison more difficult. Despite these alleged restrictions, Aleema Khan insisted that the PTI founder has remained determined and steadfast. She said he continues to focus on reading the Quran and reflecting on its translation whenever possible, adding that his faith has helped him maintain a positive outlook while facing the challenges of imprisonment. Her remarks came as PTI leaders, supporters, and lawyers gathered outside the Islamabad High Court, where they continued to call for legal relief for the former prime minister. The media interaction attracted significant attention as party members expressed concern over the PTI founder’s health and prison conditions. Aleema Khan’s comments are the latest in a series of statements from the PTI leadership regarding the treatment of the party founder during his detention. Party officials have repeatedly voiced concerns about his medical care, access to books, and overall prison environment. They have urged the authorities to ensure that he receives appropriate healthcare and is granted facilities in accordance with prison regulations. The government and prison authorities have previously rejected or disputed several allegations made by PTI leaders regarding the former prime minister’s treatment in custody. However, the issue continues to remain a point of political debate, with PTI maintaining that its founder’s legal rights and well-being should be protected. As legal proceedings continue, Aleema Khan reiterated that her brother remains firm in his resolve. She concluded by saying that, despite the challenges he faces in prison, he remains spiritually strong through his regular recitation of the Holy Quran and reading of its translation.

Iran claims drone strikes on US bases

Iran’s military has claimed that it launched a fresh wave of drone attacks targeting US military facilities in Bahrain and Jordan, escalating tensions across the region. According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the Iranian military said its drones targeted Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. The statement claimed that the strikes hit fuel storage facilities, warehouses containing military equipment, and residential areas used by military personnel. The Iranian military also claimed that its forces carried out attacks on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, also known as Al-Azraq Air Base, in Jordan. According to the statement, the strikes targeted aircraft hangars, maintenance facilities, and buildings used to house military personnel. Iranian authorities did not provide details about the scale of the alleged damage or report whether the attacks caused casualties. The claims also have not been independently verified. The Iranian military warned that any action against Iran’s interests could further destabilize the region and threaten economic security. The latest claims come amid heightened regional tensions and growing concerns that military confrontations could spread beyond existing conflict zones. The alleged attacks, if confirmed, would mark a significant escalation in Iran’s military actions against US-linked facilities in the region and could increase pressure on Washington and its regional allies.
