Who controls Senate Housing Society? Senate panel raises alarm over alleged private takeover

Islamabad: A Senate committee raised serious questions over the management of the Senate Employees Housing Cooperative Society after complaints emerged that Senate employees were still waiting to receive possession of their plots, while the society was allegedly controlled by people who were not its actual members.

The Senate Sub Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control took strict notice of the complaints during a meeting held at Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Saifullah Abro. The committee questioned how a housing society created for Senate employees could remain outside the control of its own members.

Senator Saifullah Abro directed authorities to take action against anyone found illegally managing the society and said the rights of Senate employees must be protected. “Only the legitimate members of the society should control its affairs,” the committee observed while demanding transparency and accountability.

Officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) informed the committee that a criminal case had already been registered against the management of the Senate Housing Society on the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. However, the committee stated the matter required further investigation and directed FIA officials to provide a fresh report on the society’s current management within one week.

The committee members expressed concern over reports that employees who were supposed to benefit from the housing project had not yet received possession of their plots. They questioned why the employees were still facing difficulties despite the society being established for their welfare.

The committee made it clear that no individual or private group would be allowed to control the housing society if they had no legal authority to do so. Senator Saifullah Abro said strict legal action would be taken against anyone involved in unlawful management or activities.

The committee said its main goal was to ensure that Senate employees receive their rightful benefits and that the society operates according to the law. The committee will review the matter again after the FIA submits its updated report.

    PM Shehbaz unveils first Youth Employment Policy

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced Pakistan’s first Youth Employment Policy. He said the government is focusing on education, skills, employment and entrepreneurship for young people. Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, Shehbaz said a significant amount of money had been allocated for youth development this year. He stressed the importance of equal educational opportunities. He said every child should have access to quality education.The prime minister said Pakistan could not achieve the vision of Quaid-e-Azam if quality education remained limited to wealthy families. He criticised the gap between privileged and poor students. He said elite institutions provide better facilities to children from affluent families. According to Shehbaz, this inequality has contributed to Pakistan’s weak performance in the education sector. He said his government had worked to bring students from remote and less-developed areas into the education system. The prime minister also highlighted the Daanish Schools programme. He said its network is being expanded beyond Punjab. New Daanish Schools are being established in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, he added. Shehbaz said young people must be given access to modern education and technology. He warned that Pakistan would fall further behind if its youth were not prepared for the changing global economy. 35% quota for women The prime minister announced important measures under the new employment policy. He said women would receive a 35% quota across the labour force.He also announced a 10% annual quota for startups. The measure is aimed at encouraging young entrepreneurs and creating new employment opportunities. Shehbaz said young people should not only look for jobs. They should also be encouraged to establish businesses and create employment for others. Daanish University in Islamabad The prime minister also announced progress on Daanish University in Islamabad.He said the university is being established to provide modern and quality education. Classes are expected to begin next year.Shehbaz said financial difficulties should not prevent talented students from pursuing higher education. He said students with strong academic results would be given opportunities even if they could not afford expensive education. The prime minister pledged that his government would take every possible step for youth development. He said higher education and employment would remain among the government’s key priorities. Shehbaz also highlighted the government’s laptop distribution programme. He said around 700,000 laptops had already been distributed among deserving students.According to the prime minister, the laptops were awarded strictly on merit. He recalled that the programme had faced criticism in the past. Some critics had accused the government of using laptops for political purposes.Shehbaz rejected the criticism and said deserving students received the devices based on their academic performance. He further announced that 250,000 students would receive Chromebooks this year.The devices will also be distributed on merit. The prime minister said investment in education and digital skills was essential for Pakistan’s future.He said young people represent the country’s biggest resource. Providing them with education, technology and employment opportunities, he added, would help build a skilled workforce and strengthen the national economy.The new Youth Employment Policy is therefore being presented as a broader government effort to connect education with employment and entrepreneurship.

    Suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan has been extradited from Dubai back to Ireland, marking the end of a ten-year stretch abroad that began after an armed assault on his life. The 49-year-old landed at Casement Aerodrome in Dublin under tight security protocols, arriving on an official Irish government aircraft. Kinahan is scheduled to present himself at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, where he will face charges of commanding an organised crime syndicate before being remanded to Portlaoise Prison. Law enforcement agencies contend that Kinahan holds a high-ranking position within the Kinahan crime syndicate, an enterprise tied to global narcotics trafficking, illegal arms dealing, and further criminal operations. Kinahan has not been convicted of these specific offences. Speaking on a podcast hosted by James English prior to his surrender, Kinahan voiced an expectation that he would face significant jail time. ‘I think I’ve already got life in prison. And we have to go through the dance now,’ he remarked. Whilst conceding that he had ‘not been an angel’, Kinahan asserted that the claims made against him were exaggerated, adding: ‘I believe in a way I’m a scapegoat.’ His departure from Ireland occurred after a targeted assassination attempt at a boxing weigh-in inside Dublin’s Regency Hotel back in February 2016. He subsequently established residency in Dubai, where local authorities apprehended him in April. The legal transfer was enabled after Ireland and the United Arab Emirates ratified an extradition agreement in May 2025. Emirati courts dismissed Kinahan’s final legal challenge against the transfer last month, paving the way for his custody transfer to Irish officials.
