Come to streets, we’ll serve you water’: Nasir

Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has responded strongly to recent statements by MQM-P leaders Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Mustafa Kamal. The remarks have sparked a fresh political exchange between the Sindh government and the MQM-P leadership. Shah reacted to the MQM-P leaders’ calls for political mobilisation and protests. He said they were free to take to the streets if they wanted to. In a sarcastic remark, he said the weather was hot and that “water would be provided” to them. The minister also questioned MQM-P’s demand for an account of the past 18 years. He asked the party leaders to explain how much accountability they had themselves provided during their political tenure. Shah also rejected suggestions about changing the existing structure of Sindh. He said the constitutional and geographical status of the province could not be changed according to the wishes of an individual political leader. He also criticised Mustafa Kamal’s remarks about the creation of new provinces. Shah said the country was already facing difficulties in managing its existing four provinces. He questioned why there was now a demand for additional provinces. The minister accused the MQM-P of turning towards public issues as elections approach. He said the party had previously enjoyed the benefits of political power but was now raising issues concerning the people. Shah’s comments came after Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui accused the Pakistan Peoples Party of creating an ethnic and linguistic divide in Sindh. Siddiqui had also demanded an accurate population count and stronger local governments. MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal had separately said that the party would take to the streets to demand its rights. The statements have increased political tension between the MQM-P and the Sindh government. Sindh Culture Minister Zulfiqar Shah also criticised the MQM-P leadership. He said Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui was struggling to protect his position as party chairman. Zulfiqar Shah described the differences between Khalid Maqbool and Mustafa Kamal as the result of what he called divisive politics. He said the MQM-P leadership should first resolve its own differences. He also questioned the competing positions within the party. According to Zulfiqar Shah, the divided leadership should first decide whose statements should be taken seriously. The latest exchange comes amid renewed political debate over Sindh’s governance, representation and local government system. MQM-P has been demanding greater authority for local governments and an accurate population census. The party has also raised concerns about political representation and resource distribution in Sindh. The Sindh government, however, has rejected calls that could affect the province’s existing constitutional and geographical structure.

Lahore High Court sets aside lower courts

The Lahore High Court has overturned the decisions of two lower courts that had directed the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to issue Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) to two individuals despite questions regarding their citizenship. The ruling reinforces that disputes involving suspected citizenship fall within the jurisdiction of NADRA’s verification mechanism rather than civil courts. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani issued a detailed written judgment after allowing NADRA’s appeals against the decisions of the lower courts. In the judgment, the court clarified that civil courts do not have the legal authority to decide cases involving disputed or questionable citizenship. Instead, such matters must be addressed through the procedures established under the relevant laws governing nationality verification. According to the written decision, individuals whose identity cards have been blocked or whose citizenship status has been questioned must approach the NADRA Verification Board within 30 days. The High Court further directed the Verification Board to examine each case and issue a decision in accordance with the law within 60 days of receiving the application. The judgment explains that NADRA had challenged the rulings issued by the Senior Civil Judge in Sialkot and the Sessions Judge, who had ordered the authority to issue national identity cards to two citizens despite concerns regarding the authenticity of their Pakistani citizenship. The High Court concluded that these lower courts exceeded their legal jurisdiction by issuing such directives. Justice Kayani emphasized in the written ruling that obtaining a national identity card is a fundamental right of every eligible Pakistani citizen. However, the court also stressed that this right must be exercised in accordance with the law and only after citizenship has been properly verified through the legally prescribed process.   The respondents maintained before the court that they were Pakistani citizens by birth and therefore entitled to receive national identity cards. They argued that NADRA had incorrectly classified them as foreign nationals and subsequently blocked their CNICs, depriving them of an essential legal document required for everyday civic and economic activities. NADRA, on the other hand, presented documentary evidence supporting its decision to classify the individuals as non-citizens pending verification. According to the High Court’s judgment, the authority’s documentary evidence was found to be reliable and credible. The court observed that the respondents failed to produce sufficient evidence to establish their claim of Pakistani citizenship. The judgment further states that the lower courts overlooked significant documentary evidence and failed to apply the relevant legal principles before directing NADRA to issue the identity cards. As a result, the High Court held that these legal errors warranted judicial intervention. Justice Kayani noted that the High Court has the constitutional authority to correct legal mistakes committed by subordinate courts. Exercising this authority, the court declared both lower court decisions null and void, thereby allowing NADRA’s appeals. The ruling establishes an important legal precedent regarding the resolution of citizenship disputes in Pakistan. It clarifies that while access to a national identity card is a fundamental right, questions relating to citizenship must first be determined through NADRA’s statutory verification process rather than through civil litigation. The decision also seeks to ensure consistency in handling citizenship-related cases by directing affected individuals to the NADRA Verification Board and requiring the board to decide such matters within a specified timeframe. This approach aims to balance the protection of citizens’ rights with the need to maintain the integrity and accuracy of Pakistan’s national identity registration system.

Anti-corruption probe flags HMC appointment irregu…

The Anti-Corruption Department has conducted an inquiry into alleged irregularities and appointments to key positions at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), raising questions over the appointment procedures and eligibility of several candidates. The inquiry report identified alleged violations of rules and regulations in appointments to important positions, including Director Finance, Chief Internal Auditor, Director Supply Chain, and Director Research and Clinical Audit. According to the report, a person was appointed as Director Finance despite allegedly failing to meet the prescribed eligibility criteria. The inquiry also found that the candidate who secured the top position on merit for the post of Chief Internal Auditor was allegedly overlooked. The report further stated that the appointment of the Director Supply Chain was made despite the candidate allegedly not meeting the required technical expertise criteria. Similarly, the inquiry raised objections to the appointment of the Director Research and Clinical Audit, stating that the appointee allegedly did not meet the required eligibility criteria. The Anti-Corruption Department said the appointments allegedly violated provisions of the Medical Teaching Institutions (MTI) Act and relevant rules and regulations. Based on its findings, the inquiry recommended that the disputed appointments be cancelled. The report also recommended action against the Chairman and members of the Board of Governors, along with other officials allegedly involved in the appointment process. According to the inquiry report, the disputed appointments remained in place for around three years, allegedly causing a financial loss of approximately Rs150 million to the public exchequer. The inquiry recommended recovering the alleged financial loss from the individuals responsible. The Anti-Corruption Department has also recommended verification of the educational qualifications, professional experience and certificates of the officials concerned. The verification is aimed at determining whether the documents submitted by the candidates at the time of their appointments met the prescribed criteria and were in accordance with the relevant rules. The matter has already been under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Department. A petition challenging appointments to key posts, including Director Finance, Chief Internal Auditor and Director Supply Chain, is also pending before the Peshawar High Court.

Ronaldo hints at retirement as 1,000-goal dream nears

LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo has given his clearest indication yet that the end of his extraordinary football career could be approaching, saying the upcoming season may be his final one as a professional. The 41-year-old Portugal captain, however, appears determined to make his final chapter memorable. Ronaldo is chasing the extraordinary milestone of 1,000 goals and wants to leave the sport with a legacy that reflects more than two decades at the highest level. “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo told Vogue in an interview published on Sunday. Ronaldo made his senior debut for Sporting CP in 2002 and has since built one of the most decorated careers in football history. He has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus before continuing his career with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has also become one of international football’s most prolific scorers with Portugal. Ronaldo currently has 976 goals for club and country, leaving him just 24 goals short of the unprecedented 1,000-goal mark. Reaching that figure before retirement would add another remarkable achievement to a career already filled with records. Yet one major prize remains missing from his collection: the FIFA World Cup. Portugal’s failure to win the 2026 tournament means Ronaldo will likely finish his international career without lifting football’s biggest trophy. Despite his latest comments, Ronaldo has not announced a specific retirement date, leaving open the possibility that he could continue beyond the coming season. The veteran forward has also begun thinking about life away from football. He said he has plenty of interests that could keep him occupied once he finally steps away from the game. Ronaldo mentioned travelling more, playing padel and enjoying the rewards of a career built on years of discipline and sacrifice. For now, though, his focus remains on football — and perhaps the most eye-catching target of all: becoming the first player to reach 1,000 career goals.

Selena Gomez faces fraud lawsuit over Wondermind

Selena Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, are facing allegations of fraud in a new lawsuit involving Wondermind, the mental health and wellness company they helped launch. The legal action has brought renewed attention to the company’s financial difficulties and internal problems. Wondermind was founded in 2021 with the goal of creating a platform focused on mental health and emotional wellness. Gomez and Teefey were closely associated with the venture, while Daniella Pierson served as its co-CEO. The company initially attracted significant attention and investment because of its high-profile founders and ambitious plans. Now, investors who put approximately $1.2 million into Wondermind are suing Gomez, Teefey, Pierson and Wondermind Global Inc. They are seeking a jury trial and financial recovery, claiming they were misled about the company’s condition and future prospects. According to the lawsuit, investors were allegedly given the impression that Wondermind had the infrastructure, leadership and resources needed to become a successful mental health platform. However, the plaintiffs claim the company was actually experiencing serious problems and was already facing a financial crisis. The investors also alleged that they were told Gomez would play a major role in Wondermind’s marketing efforts. They further claimed that Pierson was presented as an experienced business leader with an impressive track record and valuable partnerships. Several potential revenue-generating projects were allegedly described as being in development. However, the lawsuit claims that many of those plans failed to materialize. The plaintiffs alleged that Gomez entered into an agreement to promote Wondermind but did not fulfill her obligations under the contract. They also claimed that expected partnerships and revenue opportunities never came to fruition and that the company’s planned app was never developed. The investors further alleged that they remained unaware of the extent of Wondermind’s financial and operational difficulties for more than three years. According to the lawsuit, the company’s internal problems became widely known after a 2025 report by The Cut detailed allegations from former employees. Wondermind reportedly experienced a major financial crisis and laid off around 60 percent of its workforce in May 2025. Former employees cited in the report made allegations about Teefey’s conduct and claimed there were serious problems inside the company. Some former staff members made allegations involving drug use and described what they claimed was an unstable working environment. One former employee reportedly referred to Teefey’s office using a highly damaging description and alleged witnessing her use what they believed was Ritalin. Teefey strongly denied the accusations, describing them as false claims made by disgruntled former employees. Following the publication of the report, the investors said they sought to rescind their investments and recover the money they had put into Wondermind. The lawsuit now places Gomez, Teefey, Pierson and the company at the center of a legal dispute over whether investors were properly informed about Wondermind’s financial condition. The allegations remain claims made in the lawsuit and have not been established as facts in court. The legal proceedings could determine whether the investors’ accusations have merit and whether they are entitled to recover their investment.
